Nerada··on Building Rich Terminal Dashboards
This is brilliant, thanks for sharing!
Nerada··on Our Dumb Security Questionnaire
Correct. Some do a good enough job, but I find most lacking.
Nerada··on Our Dumb Security Questionnaire
These are often knocked back with "We charge $4,000 to answer Security Questionnaires, or you can download our pre-made pack [that answers none of these questions] here."
Nerada··on EFF's response to social media companies' decisions to block Trump’s accounts
If the EFF actually cared about freedom of speech they'd set up a registrar and hosting service.
Nerada··on YouTube's Fake Animal Rescue Ring [video]
Not an easy watch, it's a special kind of disturbing when people willingly torment small animals.
Nerada··on Check if your IP is exposing any ports. If you see 404 page, nothing is exposed
Thanks for the alternative, Shodan blocks my [cloud] IP for some reason...
Nerada··on What Satoshi Did Not Know (2015) [pdf]
This sounds incredibly interesting.

How does it work privacy-wise? Can I see other peoples wallets and who they've sent money to, received money from, etc, like Bitcoin or is it closer to Monero in that regard?

Nerada··on Learning@home hivemind – train large neural networks across the internet
Chessbase actually does something similar, where you can rent other user's computers to run analysis on positions[1]. The users offering up their machines set the price though, as opposed to an auction.

Nerada··on Learning@home hivemind – train large neural networks across the internet
I have no idea how ANNs work, but those GPT-3 numbers make it look like the barrier to better AI is an expense issue (compute/financial), whereas I always just assumed we lacked understanding or some better algorithm.
Nerada··on ReMarkable 2.0 – A digital notebook that feels like paper
I sent them an email asking about encryption at rest; the lack of reply was what made me decline to approve the purchase at our company. It's a shame because it does look like an incredible device apart from that.
Nerada··on All Your Passwords Are Belong to FPGA
Cracking good (long) passwords is far from trivial (and mathematically should remain that way), the main problem is most users pick terrible passwords.
Nerada··on SpaceX Starship SN4 launch vehicle prototype explodes after static engine test
For some reason this link re-routes me to "advertising.com".
Nerada··on MasterClass is seizing its moment
I had no idea I had access to this, thank you!
Nerada··on Ticketmaster changes policy, no longer offering refunds on postponed shows
That isn't clear-cut, at least not in NSW. The department of Fair Trading set up a series of pages which can be summarised by the quote "if the event is cancelled due to government restrictions, this impacts your rights under the consumer guarantees", followed by a plea to businesses to be nice (ha).

Nerada··on Gadgets That Refuse to Die
Anything on Archive.* fails to resolve for me for this reason; I just don't bother clicking their links anymore either.
Nerada··on A database of over 500 iPhones cops have tried to unlock
>volume and lock buttons simultaneously

Aha, that does it!

Nerada··on A database of over 500 iPhones cops have tried to unlock
I've often heard this said, but my iPhone 8 doesn't operate like this at all. Touch ID still works regardless of how many times I press the lock button. Is there a setting I'm missing? I've looked around and couldn't find anything.
Nerada··on Off-Peak Public Transport Usage
I love when I come across sites like this, where someone is just so wholly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about something I would have dismissed as mundane.
Nerada··on My fridge has an RFID chip in the water filter, so a generic filter doesn't work
Don't forget Ubik, written in 1969 by Philip K. Dick. Excerpt below.

Nerada··on Why do publishers still issue hardbacks? (2018)
They do international shipping too (or used to). I was a member for a number of years and resided outside of the UK.
Nerada··on Why do publishers still issue hardbacks? (2018)
I only ever buy print in hardcover.

The last paragraph sums it up well; I'm almost solely digital now, but if there's something I particularly enjoy, I'll hunt for the hardcover.

Nerada··on The Plain Text Project
Plaintext email is great too, cuts out a lot of superfluous junk.

Nerada··on Privacy: Is That iPhone?
I'm in the same boat. I went to check after reading this and I had already disabled both settings.
Nerada··on Twitter to ban political advertising
Smart move from Twitter. By removing the speech of people they disagree with under the guise of vague and selective ToS enforcement, they're still able to push their own political agenda, while removing the recourse that political advertising would allow.
Nerada··on KeePassXC 2.5
That's needed for the Auto-Type to find windows.

Nerada··on An Afternoon in Tokyo with the Man Who Designs Casio G-Shock Watches (2017)
Did you approach Sony for a repair, and if so, how did that play out? I tried to get Samsung to repair my two year old Galaxy when it turned off one day and refused to turn back on, but as it was purchased in a different country they refused to help. Haven't bought a Samsung since.
Nerada··on WeWork Co-Founder Has Cashed Out at Least $700M Via Sales, Loans
Levine does some really great working breaking down a lot of these current events.
Nerada··on I was wrong about spreadsheets (2017)
As the guy on the other end who has to read the responses; it's not fun here either. Though, there's movement in the SaaS space that looks to solve a lot of this. Proper text input fields, automated yearly requests for update, audit logging and notifications (x party has responded, y party asks for clarification on question z, etc).

Expensive though, but enterprise solutions always are...

Nerada··on Tagsistant: A Semantic Filesystem for Linux
For me it's simply that I'd much rather not give up my photographs to Google.
Nerada··on How AMD Gave China the ‘Keys to the Kingdom’
Seems strange to me that China was able to manufacture processors but they couldn't manufacture ballpoint pens domestically until 2017.
