NeonVice··on How Alexa knows “peanut butter” is one shopping-list item, not two
I recently heard about a book called "Anything You Want" and wanted to add it to my shopping list. I tried repeatedly saying "Alexa, add 'Anything You Want' book to my shopping list" and every variation thereof. Alexa was unable to add that book title no matter what I tried.

How is the form fill for information besides username and password (e.g. credit cards, personal contact info) compared to LastPass?
NeonVice··on Tech giants face 2% UK digital services tax
I disagree that this is good. Volatile tax rates and regulations make businesses less likely to invest and innovate. They will spend more of their time hiring lawyers and accountants, spending less time producing valuable goods and services.

NeonVice··on The Dark Reality Behind America’s Greatest Thrift Store Empire
My brother has cerebral palsy and works below minimum wage. I'm grateful that he has a job to give him a sense of responsibility and to learn basic skills. Would it be great for him to earn more money? Sure, but his output is probably not worth minimum wage and that's okay.
NeonVice··on The Dark Reality Behind America’s Greatest Thrift Store Empire
I agree that fighting the minimum wage is not "dark". If two able-minded parties voluntarily agree on a wage, then no one should be able to tell them what the correct wage should be. The minimum wage may prevent a lower-skilled worker from getting a job, because an employer would only pay a higher wage to a higher-skilled worker.
NeonVice··on Facebook is rating the trustworthiness of its users on a scale from zero to one
What are you insinuating? Facebook as a whole leans left.
NeonVice··on Facebook finally hands over leave campaign Brexit ads
Retaliation by employers for funding certain speech. Violent retaliation for funding certain speech.
NeonVice··on Ask HN: Any good examples of learning through games/puzzles, for adults?
Exercism is a great resource. Their tests are thorough and reading other users' code submissions has helped me immensely.

Their new look is a lot less devilish. :)

NeonVice··on States Can Require Internet Tax Collection, Supreme Court Rules
What if each state has a different set of product types?

IMO, the federal government's responsibility to regulate interstate commerce should include creating a standard of product categories. States can then tax those categories at whatever level they see fit.

I wish that congress would stop delegating authority to the executive.
NeonVice··on Honolulu lawmakers agree to cap surge pricing for Uber and Lyft
Those representatives can still make counterproductive and economically illiterate decisions even if they are representing "the people". There is nothing in that article that shows that these politicians understood all of the unintended consequences of their decisions. You and I may think of these consequences, but that doesn't mean bureaucrats do.

These decisions should be discussed based on the merits of the decisions themselves, not simply assuming that the politicians took everything into consideration and understood all of the consequences. There are many of "the people" who will wholeheartedly disagree with these price caps.

If two individuals agree to a price, what makes the politicians brilliant enough to tell them what the right price is.

NeonVice··on I was Zuckerberg’s speechwriter
I was hoping that a congressman would ask Zuckerberg if he still viewed his users this way. I'm sure he had a well-prepared response to this exact question, just in case.
NeonVice··on The State Pension Funding Gap
I just checked the facts. You're not necessarily wrong. An exception is DNC-led Delaware. DNC strongholds tend to have the worst credit ratings.

NeonVice··on Suspect in YouTube Shooting Angry That Her Videos Had Been 'De-Monetized'
There is a difference between private people voting with their wallets and encouraging a mob to pressure a company to withdraw advertising from a company that they oppose politically.

NeonVice··on Federal Circuit Should Not Allow Patents on Inventions That Belong to the Public
How exactly would that work when I work for a corporation who is paying me to invent? If I am successful in my invention, then I just take my invention and run. This would stifle research investment.

NeonVice··on Amazon Wants to Extend Its Dominance in Audiobooks
I've listened to a handful of fiction audiobooks, and Dune was the only one that I've listened to that had multiple voice actors. I'm sure there are others, but it's uncommon.
NeonVice··on China to block cryptocurrency platforms that allow centralized trading
I believe the definition was purposefully left vague to allow authorities more discretion in shutting down the services designed to facilitate peer to peer transactions(e.g. sites resembling localbitcoins).
NeonVice··on Secret Service Agent Sentenced In Scheme Related To Silk Road Investigation
Bitcoin is taxed the same as personal property, so when you sell it for a profit you have to pay capital gains taxes. That leads me to believe that there is already legal recognition of a virtual currency as property, but not necessarily currency.
NeonVice··on House Republicans propose to scrap $7,500 electric vehicle credit
O&G companies are able to write off the cost of doing business just like other businesses. They are not "subsidies".

NeonVice··on The Hotel Industry’s Plan to Combat Airbnb
A tenant subletting their apartment against the terms of their contract is obviously an issue and should be addressed between the actual property owner and the current lessee. However, lobbying for a blanket law against subletting if the actual property owner is OK with it is where protectionism comes into play.
NeonVice··on The Hotel Industry’s Plan to Combat Airbnb
Capitalism != Anarchy. Free markets still require laws addressing theft, property ownership, contract law, etc. Protectionism, however, simply rewards first comers. Disruption is the crux of a free market and should be embraced not lobbied against. Services that people dislike the most due to cost or service rendered (airlines, health insurance, telecom providers) are often the most regulated.
