Nelkins··on 1BRC Coding Challenge: Nerd Sniping the Java Community
Here's a good writeup for .NET: https://hotforknowledge.com/2024/01/13/1brc-in-dotnet-among-...
Nelkins··on Feldera Incremental Compute Engine
Does anybody have a good resource to learn about the differences between things like Feldera, Materialize, Adapton, and other developments in the incremental computation space? Where are the experts hanging out? What are they reading?
Nelkins··on Feldera Incremental Compute Engine
I would love if something like this that exposed C bindings so that every language with an FFI could use the library. I’d love to be able to define pipelines and queries in .NET instead of having to use SQL.
Nelkins··on The First HTML LSP That Reports Syntax Errors
Do you think this can be applied to HTML fragments? I think it's relatively common (or at least not uncommon) to embed HTML in another language as a string. Would be cool to get LSP functionality in those strings. I'm thinking specifically with something like this:

Nelkins··on Does your startup need complex cloud infrastructure?
I've been looking at using Kamal for a side project. Seems to be similar in spirit. Has anybody used it, and if so, what do you think?

Nelkins··on Why Haskell?
Pretty sure F# was created by Don Syme, not Erik Meijer.
Nelkins··on ArcticDB: Why a Hedge Fund Built Its Own Database
I don’t think the last link is related. Different database.
Nelkins··on UUIDv7: The Time-Sortable Identifier for Modern Databases
I think the most interesting thing on this page is the blog post at the bottom of how it was deployed on a VPS using docker compose (https://austinsnerdythings.com/2023/11/01/using-github-actio...)
Nelkins··on Phoenix LiveView 1.0-RC is here
I would love if someone did a compare and contrast with LiveView and Blazor.
Nelkins··on A Logic Language for Distributed SQL Queries
Oso seems cool. Is it something that can be run locally? Seems like there's an open source library of some kind, but it's deprecated.
Nelkins··on Tailscale SSH is now Generally Available
Not directly related to this, but I'm trying to migrate to Tailscale now from OpenVPN, and it doesn't seem like there's a way to use one "account" (for example, Google auth) for multiple tailnets. Our use case is to have the user be able to select whether they want to connect to staging or prod.

Are people just doing this with time-based ACLs within the same tailnet? Curious if there's something more obvious.

Nelkins··on U.S. imposes first-ever national drinking water limits on PFAS
Do you have a link to the product? Interested in something similar.
Nelkins··on BlenderBIM – add-on for beautiful, detailed, and data-rich OpenBIM with Blender
Anybody know how this compares to the architecture workbench in FreeCAD?
Nelkins··on AvaloniaUI: Create Multi-Platform Apps with .NET
There's also https://github.com/fabulous-dev/Fabulous.Avalonia
Nelkins··on .NET on Linux: What a Contrast
Check out Avalonia’s XPF. Allows WPF to run on macOS and Linux with almost no changes in most cases.

Nelkins··on Understanding Parquet, Iceberg and Data Lakehouses
In every benchmark I've looked at online, Delta Lake format seems to have drastically better performance than Iceberg. Is this fundamental to the spec, or is it possible that Iceberg can close the gap?
Nelkins··on Let's try to understand AI monosemanticity
This reminds of research done on category-specific semantic deficits, where there can be neurodegeneration that impacts highly specific or related knowledge (for example, brain trauma that affects a person's ability to understand living things like zebras and carrots, but not non-living things like helicopters or pliers).

Nelkins··on Restricted Ketogenic Diet Therapy for Primary Lung Cancer with Brain Metastasis
There's evidence that having super high LDL cholesterol on keto may be fine (do your own research, obviously). Check out https://cholesterolcode.com/ and look up Dave Feldman. Some really interesting research will be coming out soon.
Nelkins··on Bringing garbage collected programming languages efficiently to WebAssembly
> I would say that the JVM and CLR were not designed to support many languages.

Hm...CLR stands for Common Language Runtime. I think it was explicitly created to support many languages.

Nelkins··on Show HN: Light implementation of Event Sourcing using PostgreSQL as event store
In addition to the alternatives mentioned, here’s another Postgres-only ES implementation: https://github.com/message-db/message-db
Nelkins··on 'This could be the holy grail to replace palm oil' – research team
There is emerging evidence that high cholesterol on its own is not sufficient to cause heart disease. See https://cholesterolcode.com/ .
Nelkins··on Compiling Rust for .NET, using only tea and stubbornness
Cool project. I remember someone else taking a crack at this a few years ago.

Nelkins··on Type-safe, K-sortable, globally unique identifier inspired by Stripe IDs
How much does it change between drafts? Close enough to where I could use it in production?

Nelkins··on Could Alzheimer’s be caused by an infection?
My theory: it all has to do with mitochondrial dysfunction.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is thought to be one of the underlying causes of Alzheimers, and also thought to be a potential underlying cause of cancer. And if HSV-1 interferes with mitochondria, it would be associated with both (and it is).

Edit: and it looks like it is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34809467/

Nelkins··on Excel Functions in F# Language
Nice use of F# scripting. The #r directive for Nuget packages was a great addition.
Nelkins··on Ask HN: Is Clojure Dead?
Can't speak to the others, but I'm pretty sure the F# team just doubled or tripled in size (it's still small though). Also the GitHub repo is very active: https://github.com/dotnet/fsharp .
Nelkins··on Potential fabrication in research threatens the amyloid theory of Alzheimer’s
I think we are going to find out that diet plays an enormous role in all sorts of metabolic diseases in the coming years. Specifically as it pertains to Alzheimer's, increasingly strong evidence is coming out that your risk can be reduced by avoiding excess carbs/glucose, and also by avoiding oxidized foods (in the typical Western diet, usually polyunsaturated fats that have been sitting in a bottle).

Nelkins··on A new kind of equity program
My limited experience has been that 409a valuations are extremely different from what investors pay (what investors pay per share is much more). I am curious if there has been much written about why this is.
