Err and err and err again but less and less and less.

Neil44··on Sam Neill has died
He had a lovely gentle demeanor about him. He was good recently in the Untamed series.
Neil44··on Count Binface
I think the strategy in leaving Farage to only face Binface is that win or loose it makes Farage look like an idiot. He wanted to get credibility back by getting re-elected after the recent scandal and this binface thing robs him of that.
Neil44··on What happened to nerds?
"I identify as a nerd and think I'm virtuous, therefore other people who identify as nerds should be virtuous in order to validate me"
Neil44··on Anti-social: It's fads, not friends, which now dominate social media feeds
Facebook stopped being good when they took away the order by most recent option IMO.
Neil44··on OneDrive data now has an expiry date
No access to a network that's safe? Do you have a zero day on SSL we should know about?
Neil44··on Mouseless – keyboard-driven control of macOS/Linux/Windows
That's OK in menus and the OS in general but if you're working on a web app or big form tabbing through it can be a PITA.
Neil44··on CT scans of BYD car parts
I'm having a Seal delivered next week, really looking forward to it. My friend went from a M3 to a Seal. She does a lot of miles. She says they trade blows, there's things that felt better in the Tesla and things she prefers in the BYD.
Neil44··on Adafruit receives demand letter from Fenwick legal counsel on behalf of Flux.ai
It seems there's suspiciously little context available, yet here I also am commenting on a 'vaguepost'. I wonder if one day AI will be able to filter out vagueposts from my browser along with ragebait and curiosity gap headlines.
Neil44··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
There are numerous spaces and opportunities for you to express your opinions. In fact almost anywhere else (in the US anyway)
Neil44··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
It's not a direct threat but it is a passive one, it's also swearing and a contentious statement in a confined space where everyone needs to get along for the next N hours. They know damn well what the issue is but they're going to put their hands up and claim they're just expressing an opinion and they're not hurting anyone. It's childish behavior imo.
Neil44··on The dead economy theory
I don't think it's productive to single out a specific company that's in this area. If they closed someone else would do it. If they don't execute well someone else will. It's the same mentality as people who smashed up looms to keep people employed at spinning wheels.
Neil44··on I'm Tired of Talking to AI
I hate getting AI generated emails from people. They probably haven't even read or understood the slop they're sending me, the chances of them understanding and contextualizing what I reply are slim, I might as well reply with AI slop. What's the point of any of this.

Maybe I can increase the weights on slop in my spam filter.

Neil44··on Motorola phones have started hijacking the Amazon app to insert affiliate codes
Yup. Let's see Kiras LinkedIN.
Neil44··on Shipping a laptop to a refugee camp in Uganda
We have a customer with a business in Uganda, we just give her the laptops and she physically takes them with her next time she goes there.
Neil44··on Kraftwerk's radical 1976 track
I think solar and wind are a good idea, and subsidies can be a useful tool, I think making a statement about how cheap solar and wind are without mentioning that they're subsidized is not entirely accurate or honest.
Neil44··on Details of the Daring Airdrop at Tristan Da Cunha
In case you're as interested as I was, they have google street view.
Neil44··on Kraftwerk's radical 1976 track
I did not express an opinion on whether subsidies are good or bad :)
Neil44··on Kraftwerk's radical 1976 track
Solar and wind are still heavily subsidized are they not? If they're so economically amazing why are they subsidized?
Neil44··on SecurityBaseline.eu
To be fair it's pretty much the norm with shared and even vps hosting that your cpanel etc will be publicly accessible. Only people who hand-roll their setups will have things firewalled down etc. And if it's a website promoting a local tree planting initiative or whatever is it really a good use of budget to get everything hardened so much.
Neil44··on Belgium stops decommissioning nuclear power plants
Solar and wind also require many materials extracted through mining, you can't really get away from mining whatever you do.
Neil44··on Belgium stops decommissioning nuclear power plants
I would counter that being reliant on gas and oil from our enemies as we currently are is madness.
Neil44··on Copy Fail
I thought that. surely people are going crazy right now owning anything with an our of date Wordpress exposed.
Neil44··on Chernobyl wildlife forty years on
They are not comparable accidents, Fukishima had no direct casualties and mostly very local effects and Chernobyl needs no introduction. I guess the cause / back story is more interesting for Chernobyl as well because of the human and political aspects.
Neil44··on Backblaze has stopped backing up OneDrive and Dropbox folders and maybe others
The issue with a client app backing up dropbox and onedrive folders on your computer is the files on demand feature, you could sync a 1tb onedrive to your 250gb laptop but it's OK because of smart/selective sync aka files on demand. Then backblaze backup tries to back the folder up and requests a download of every single file and now you have zero bytes free, still no backup and a sick laptop. You could oauth the backblaze app to access onedrive directly, but if you want to back your onedrive up you need a different product IMO.
Neil44··on Running Out of Disk Space in Production
I also discovered gdu recently. It's really good. It saves me running du -h --max-depth=1 | sort -h a million times trying to find where the space has gone while you're stressing about production being down.
Neil44··on Every GPU That Mattered
I had the Voodoo 1 with VGA passthrough from the 2D card. When you loaded a game you'd head a little clunk from a relay on the Voodoo taking over the VGA signal and you knew you were about to have a good time. Doesn't seem that long ago!
Neil44··on The Last Testaments of Richard II and Henry IV
If I'm in the position in future I'd love to do a history degree. I wasn't very interested in anything except computers when I was young.
Neil44··on Ubuntu 26.04 Ends 46 Years of Silent sudo Passwords
They could give feedback about key presses without giving away the password length quite easily
Neil44··on 4Chan mocks £520k fine for UK online safety breaches
That's just how the law works apparently, if there's a UK law passed that makes smoking illegal in Paris then smoking is illegal in Paris. The practicalities of this are to be worked out later.
Neil44··on WA income tax clears House after 24-hour debate
In principle it sounds like a reasonable idea but the obvious problem is that people can become domiciled elsewhere, or structure their income to avoid this. It would be interesting to know what's been planned to mitigate that.
