Nathanba··on Australia proposes ban on social media for those under 16
What even counts as social media? Is Hackernews social media? Is my future platform where people can talk to each other social media? It's all pure desperation, they could instead force social media companies to only promote useful educational, pro-science, pro-fitness, documentaries, family style content and then social media would be helpful. Forming communities around learning, robotics, science? What could possibly be better for children who look for purpose in life? It would be fantastic. But of course half the grifters on social media are also already hiding in those tags and serving the most shallow, useless, fake content about e.g ancient pyramid aliens or discussions about how veganism will help your body. As you can tell by my last little insertion here, half the problem is that even all the adults can't come to a shared understanding of what is "good" or true.
Nathanba··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
We can just take this exchange as an example, maybe that helps to clarify my actual position. Imagine if I had to contact an independent committee before I could "fire"(=ignore) your comment with several snide insults. I'd get bogged down, my work day would be slower. Imagine if somebody could drag me to court over every comment decision because hey, maybe I just ignored it for no good reason, or because you are black or white or have a certain religion. You could file an appeal at HN that I have to give you more attention. So in your desired reality we will have to find out during the court proceedings and in the meantime I am forced to pay you 15% more attention *by default* in an irrational attempt of fairness to all the other comments if they received 15% higher attention.

Having certain protections against discrimination is a good thing but they should be very carefully applied. We can already see that the New York Times Tech Guild does not seem to want careful application of these rules if their website doesn't even mention any evaluation of worker productivity or value, all their study apparently did was to look at pay difference without looking at work difference. A perfect example of a total failure to care about the correct things, a total failure to care about what the company needs to achieve (=actual value) and just looking at pay with no connection to possible reasons I enumerated. https://www.nyguild.org/post/pay-inequity-at-the-new-york-ti...

Nathanba··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
I just don't know, all these points sound so weirdly out of touch with reality, it feels like we live in a world of children and there are no parents anymore.

Point 1: Only getting fired for a good reason? Who decides what a good reason is? The boss right? So what are we even doing here, what's the hidden implication? They want a foot in the door to be able to argue that X wasn't really a good reason and they'll strike over it. If I were a company owner/boss I would want to be able to fire people who are terrible to be around, argumentative for no good reason. Is that a good reason? They would think no because it's a personal fit issue. And yet it's totally legitimate, people don't get hired all the time over "fit" but then you can't fire over "fit". Everytime I have to deal with such colleagues I always think "man if I were a boss, I'd just fire such people, it's so obviously poison for the work environment". Arguing effectively is important but because it's so important it's a great duty to not use it as a tool for personal benefits.

Point 2: Pay discrepancies for "women or people of color" could easily have real world reasons, maybe they really are just worse at their job, less engaged, less ambitious, whatever it is that causes less pay. It's not impossible for this to be the case, no matter how uncomfortable that may be for everyone. Yes really. Yes really really. It can absolutely be true. You might even have a situation where every worker from Russia is just worse at their job. Or the majority of workers that are e.g hindu are just worse for whatever reason that a company can't fathom. It may even be the case that everyone who is white is worse for whatever reason, maybe they are too comfortable, who knows, none of this is impossible and none of this is the job of the company to figure out. I need to have the legal power to pay worse people less money or we are in a situation where you just levied a massive hidden tax on my company. You want me to subsidize worse performers in some strange hope that this is going to help the country as a whole to be nicer. Well having a nicer country would be fantastic, I just want you to be clear that you are issuing massive, gigantic new taxes with these so called anti-racist, anti-sexist rules and it's not just a tax on the company, it also hurts the psychology of all the better workers, so you are hurting society in general. Who is going to count the cost at the end? Why work harder after all if you can just have a certain genetic profile or protected political class and then you'll get free money. What such people who push for this are always implying is that the company is hurting itself in sexist, racist confusion, the implication is that these people are underpaid for the value they provide and the company is too incompetent to see it. The union or government in their infinite wisdom is going to force the company's racists/sexists/homophobes to finally pay according to the real value of these workers and the only metric that they will use to determine the real value is genetics and political class. Absurd isn't even a strong enough word to describe it. Even in the theoretical best case scenario for such a rule where you truly have identical value from two different people, why reward the person that doesn't want to negotiate for more pay? What we should actually do is maybe look at workers' family situation and give people who can't negotiate effectively due to raising kids that they get a government tax bonus. But wait, that is already the case! People who have kids can already get a tax bonus.

Point 3: Yes it would be nice if we could all work how we want but how is that a legitimate negotiable thing for the union to involve itself in? If the company thinks that home office doesn't work for them then who is the union to say otherwise?!

The entire mindset here is so utterly divorced from reality, it's like a luxury daycare where the kids complain that some other kid got a slightly better piece of the pie.

I wouldn't call it the clearest case of lawfare, any reasonable person can look at these designs and see that it's copying the core design:

Nathanba··on Steam games will need to disclose kernel-level anti-cheat on store pages
I agree, we need something that emphasizes that it executes undesired functions. "Trojan horse" would fit better but it's associated with computer virii now. I think I would call it something like "Traitor software".. it generally does the functions you installed it for and pretends to be normal software but then when you aren't looking it betrays you later.
Nathanba··on Bitwarden SDK relicensed from proprietary to GPLv3
that's not my experience, I've lost bookmarks due to firefox sync multiple times.
Nathanba··on What docs-as-code means
the second you put docs into version control next to code it's no longer low friction enough. Suddenly you have peer review for docs change is far too much work.
Nathanba··on Archaeologists found an ancient Egyptian observatory
Religion is just a form of trained education, you see the same type of belief in people who were educated in schools. People who go through such targetted training are inherently going to believe that the training had some kind of purpose and made it unnecessary to reevaluate it every single time it's brought up. After all what's the point of training if you have to question it all day. This is why you see so many people in society fairly blindly parrotting "I believe in science!" and you think they mean: oh you believe in the scientific method, truth above all else, etc. But no, they mean that they were trained to believe in this particular thing that the tribe thinks is important and they kinda got the gist of it during training.
Nathanba··on Tesla's value drops $60B after investors fail to hail self-driving 'Cybercab'
yes and this would need to have a railsystem too if it ever wants to drive into a parking lot that has a speedbump on it, like for example the parking lot of my apartment complex
Nathanba··on Tesla's value drops $60B after investors fail to hail self-driving 'Cybercab'
The problem is that it doesn't make sense. A bus with no windows, no steering wheel and no ground clearance, so a tram. A new car with full self driving ..except why would it need to be new when he's been promising FSD for various tesla cars for years.

edit: sorry I just checked, it does appear to have see through windows at this timestamp https://youtu.be/-JOas3fcXU0?t=896

Nathanba··on Nearly all of the Google images results for "baby peacock" are AI generated
His comparison isn't totally off. At some point our global perception of a certain subject might be totally different from what it is in reality just because all images about X are the optimal, AI improved, photoshopped version. This is in fact what women mean when they say that beauty standards are becoming unrealistic: Quite literally the standard image of women is being altered. Kind of similar to how the standard image of a baby peacock is being altered.
Nathanba··on NixOS is a good server OS, except when it isn't
yes, https://github.com/garnix-io/garn But weirdly there was little interest and they rebranded themselves around being a more general build system based on nix instead of what they originally said about being a nix reimplmentation in typescript.
Nathanba··on Dockworkers at ports from Maine to Texas go on strike
Yeah... it's a pretty strong signal to send to the company owners. It's a direct threat to the company's ability to compete and therefore survive in exchange for maximum personal benefits. I guess it's probably mutual and the company squeezed them for maximum profit too but man.. This is not a fight that can be won unless the entire world stagnates at the current technological level forever.
Nathanba··on Who is Marcellus Williams: Execution in Missouri despite evidence of innocence
I think even as a non-christian and especially if you comment like this you should know the absolute minimum about christianity: that the death penalty is obviously in the bible and commanded by God plenty of times
Nathanba··on Twitter/X will let people you've blocked see your posts
I also thought that it was weird but I still remain neutral about it. Pros could be that it helps to psychologically dislodge toxic people from you if you can make them unable to read your replies. It also moves the power a bit more to the content writer versus the reader, suddenly the reader has an extra incentive not to spam or annoy the writer. On the other hand it seems like a lot of people used this feature mostly just on people they personally disagree with and this might have been a huge reason why people became so isolated in their social bubbles. We do have a real problem in our society which is that we increasingly have differing morals and ignoring those differences isn't really a good thing, it's more like a ceasefire situation.
Nathanba··on Twitter/X will let people you've blocked see your posts
they can use block
Nathanba··on They stole my voice with AI
general every day people will have to figure out that photoshop exists and that it contains AI now that can invent pictures from scratch. It should be easy to figure out, just explain that it can paint 100% realistically like a camera. The real issue is how people will start using this as a defense for criminal acts. "it wasn't me, all the camera footage is AI generated"
Nathanba··on Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon
I read that all other political parties were forced to disband their militia after the civil war, only Hezbollah was allowed to keep their arms.
Nathanba··on Writing a book in the age of open source
Yes I've suspected for a long time that this is really what you have to do. Either you are so immersed and have such a good memory that you live in your own fantasy world every day... or reality sets in and you treat fantasy worlds just like the real world, I mean that's what you want after all: For it to feel as real and believable as possible. The real world is pretty complex and full of details, facts and history and lore. Doing this without a database or without treating it like a historical research project is futile. You'd never hope to archive the entire lore and history of e.g the aztek culture in the real world without writing it all down. Hoping against hope that you'd somehow manage to make a believable window into a whole fantasy culture without having a far bigger corpus available at all times so you can adjust that window is futile. After all you have to move that window around for the story to develop and if there is nothing behind it, you constantly have to invent new things adhoc for every millimeter that you moved it. It's too hard.
Nathanba··on Brazil top court threatens to suspend X within 24 hours
So your response to me is a question for the very thing that I asked you for, this is very bad discussion form when you throw such serious accusations around. Merely giving examples of Erdogan or Modi is obviously not good enough because Musk says that he follows local national laws. So according to that personal rule, all his behavior is consistent. You said that he breaks his own rules, so where does it happen? Are you assuming that disobeying the Brazil order is such a case? Then you have to say so and show why Elon's reason for doing so is wrong because yes, he has given reasons for that. I personally don't know them, I don't care about every single case that affects Twitter. I do care about the social media circus arriving at HN where people think that they can just throw these easy accusations and then not even bother actually touching on the core issue.
Nathanba··on Elasticsearch is open source, again
Those are the same reasons for why I avoid AGPL (and GPL frankly, because I dont want to make my frontend code fully open source either). I always thought that when a project is AGPL then I might as well consider it off limits for myself because if any of my code is touching it and then that code indirectly eventually reaches users via the network then wouldn't that also mean that I have to open source everything? I mean otherwise you could just put any AGPL software behind a proxy and you'd be instantly fine which I don't think that's how it works. In an ideal world we would have a license where you're required to open source only the changes you make to the 3rd party code, not everything that surrounds it and without restrictions on linking or network. But I guess that is too hard to enforce.

So be specific: Which disinformation in your opinion should have been censored at which government's request and wasn't?
Nathanba··on Many small queries are efficient in SQLite
yes unfortunately only postgres has that convenient thing where you don't have to go out of your way to specify all the column names. SQLServer has it too by a different name but not MySQL
Nathanba··on Many small queries are efficient in SQLite
it is very interesting, I have a similar blog post in my bookmarks as well: https://www.crunchydata.com/blog/generating-json-directly-fr...

the problem is that it only works with Postgres, not mysql or sqlite or pretty much anything else (at least not as conveniently) and the bigger problem is that the queries become more complex

Nathanba··on Many small queries are efficient in SQLite
Most people don't have tens or thousands of webservers and could be running with a more efficient inprocess database that syncs to another networked readonly replica for a very long time. I'm very surprised that MySQL or Postgres still don't have an inprocess mode because it's such an obvious win and on a technical coding level it should (naively) be very easy to switch from network calls to direct calls.

Nathanba··on Pipe Syntax in SQL
unfortunately KQL doesn't seem to have INSERT, UPDATE etc. support, it seems to be a pure query language for querying. Unless this strange different .insert syntax is what they intended for their language from the start? I don't know: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/kusto/management/data-inge...
Nathanba··on Zed AI
Subscriptions are only okay for me if it's done like Jetbrains does it, where you can keep the old versions permanently. Partly because it implies what has to be true for monthly payments to make sense: that the software keeps getting better and keeps getting support for various tech advances that happen and tools and databases. If I'm paying monthly for something that doesn't cost them anything then that feels illogical on my side. This should become a thing with online services too, at least let me keep some kind of upgraded version of your service after I stop paying. Something please, anything to make me feel less like a chump for having paid and then ending up with nothing in the end.
Nathanba··on CockroachDB license change

Nathanba··on Show HN: I've spent nearly 5y on a web app that creates 3D apartments
I also think that the walk feature should have wasd and arrow movement. Maybe it should transition more slowly if you use those keys but when I read "walk" then my expectation in a 3d environment is that I can navigate more freely with keys.
