Why you think that you can talk on everyone's behalf?

Nasreddin_Hodja··on Ask HN: Free mail service for custom domains - G Suite alternative
Only for first time. If you are already experienced, it's not so hard to setup a server. Or you can hire a freelancer to do the job for you.
Nasreddin_Hodja··on Tell HN: Reddit was showing “Blocked” when accessed with Firefox
#metoo

Faking User-Agent header doesn't help.

Nasreddin_Hodja··on Systemd, 10 years later (2020)
I heard that Gnome is dependent on systemd now.

> Snap and flatpak are essentially just package managers, I can't see why you would expect those to be worse than any other package manager.

Those are even worse than tarball bundles. Main purpose of both overengineered projects is to tie users to vendor's services (snapcraft, flathub, e.t.c.). Centralized delivery is outmoded, future is decentralized distributed distribution. Both package managers deprive me of control over my system. I don't like the aggressiveness with which these projects are enforced. When Let's Encrypt switched to Spat as the only official distribution of their tool, I had to switch to alternative tool acme.sh instead of installing bloated snapd on my server.

Nasreddin_Hodja··on Systemd, 10 years later (2020)
> systemd became the de-facto default init sys because Distro Maintainers have chosen it.

Because they were forced to choose it due to vendorlock and many other projects became dependent on systemd. Unsystemding everything would be very expensive.

Same problem will be with snap and flatpak.

Nasreddin_Hodja··on The Future of Snapcraft
> Please just publish as a normal, plain old apt.

I personally would prefer appimage or tarball bundle (like Mozilla does).

Nasreddin_Hodja··on Google fined €150M, Facebook €60M for for non-compliance with French legislation
> This is exactly what the advertising industry wants

Ads never were problem unlike GDPR.

Nasreddin_Hodja··on Google fined €150M, Facebook €60M for for non-compliance with French legislation
> It's a shame there aren't more big fines for shitty sites, like stackoverflow.com, that punish people who don't accept all cookies by prompting on every visit.

Cookie banners should be made as much annoying as possible so that people hate it and begin to protest that law.

Nasreddin_Hodja··on A modest proposal to fix web search
> I want a search engine where I can upvote and downvote sites, making them go up and down in the results.

It will not work well, popular opinion is not always best. Also search engines already use come kind of upvoting: it is most likely page is being upvoted when you visit it from search results (probably this is one of reasons why many bullshit results on top).

Nasreddin_Hodja··on You block ads in your browser, why not in your city?
I don't block ads especially, I'm OK with them. I block requests to 3rd party hosts, this also blocks ads too
Nasreddin_Hodja··on Linux Ate My RAM
> How about this one: the entire system becomes so unresponsive that even a VT switch takes multiple minutes to process, never mind actually logging in and running diagnostics. I don't know exactly why, but I used to get this pretty regularly on a 2 GB laptop if I did the wrong thing in Firefox.

It looks like 12309 https://web.archive.org/web/20140816132654/https://bugzilla....

Nasreddin_Hodja··on Russian court accidentally confirmed Russian military presence in Ukraine
> They should probably stop invading more and more of it over time, then.

They should do it for the sake of security of Europe. Ukraine is not capable of controlling "own" territory.

Nasreddin_Hodja··on Russian court accidentally confirmed Russian military presence in Ukraine
> If Ukraine is attacked they will fight to the death

They will not. They gave up Crimea almost without fight. Many people at Ukraine are russian speaking and many of them don't mind becoming a part of Russia, just like Criemea people. Just compare with Chechen war in 90's.

Nasreddin_Hodja··on New Linux malware hides in cron jobs with invalid dates
The most interest thing is how it gets into the system but it's not mentioned.
Nasreddin_Hodja··on NATO chief warns Russia against invading Ukraine
Russia should take control over Ukraine and Belarus for the security of Europe. These countries are poor at controlling their borders well enough and terrorists can pass to Europe through. Also these countries threaten to cut off gas supplies to Europe through their territory.
Nasreddin_Hodja··on Expross the new Python web framework for express.js devs
Oh no, decorators based routing :(
Nasreddin_Hodja··on Flatpak Is Not the Future
That's true, future app distributions should utilize web 3.0, e.g. decentralization. There is 0install ( https://0install.net/ ), for example, it is better.
Nasreddin_Hodja··on Python: Please stop screwing over Linux distros
Mess is freedom. It gives many choices.
Nasreddin_Hodja··on LibreWolf – A fork of Firefox, focused on privacy, security and freedom
> The ISP gets your data

Browsers know much more. Most channels are encrypted nowadays so ISP doesn't know what you talk about on internets.

Nasreddin_Hodja··on Facebook-owned sites were down
Ha-ha!
Nasreddin_Hodja··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
The funny thing is that they use the term "protected classes" and in their opinion dividing people into unequal classes should not offend anyone. https://github.com/ruby/www.ruby-lang.org/pull/2690#issuecom...
Nasreddin_Hodja··on Are SSDs More Reliable Than Hard Drives?

Nasreddin_Hodja··on Why Telegram had to follow Apple and Google when they suspended a voting app
> Russian authorities can't block notifications selectively to the Telegram app, only to all apps that use Google's and Apple's infrastructure.

But they can ask Apple and Google to ban it.

Nasreddin_Hodja··on Why Telegram had to follow Apple and Google when they suspended a voting app
> law he mentioned doesn’t exist anymore.

Also that law is applicable to certified mass media like TV, radio, magazines, news papers e.t.c., but not social media, chats, apps, forums e.t.c.

Nasreddin_Hodja··on Telegram blocks Navalny's “Smart Voting” bot
It's funny that they call "smart" doing what an app tells you what to do.
Nasreddin_Hodja··on Ubuntu to Make Firefox Snap Default in 21.10
> Why do they keep pushing this crap?

Because every company wants to vendorlock all to their service. Same with systemd, flatpak e.t.c.

Nasreddin_Hodja··on Ubuntu to Make Firefox Snap Default in 21.10
Ok, I will just use tarballs from Mozilla site.
Nasreddin_Hodja··on Reddit rejects moderators' call for harsh measures against Covid misinformation
> call for harsh measures against Covid misinformation

Such a hypocricy... Vaccine fan communities contain disinformation too.

Even their first sentence contains lie: "Everyone on this planet has been affected by the SARS-Cov-2" ( https://old.reddit.com/r/vaxxhappened/comments/pbe8nj/we_cal... )

Actually not everyone, at least I was affected by covid hystericals only but not by covid.

Nasreddin_Hodja··on SoundStream: An End-to-End Neural Audio Codec
When comparing, your vorbis examples were encoded with 48kHz too?
Nasreddin_Hodja··on SoundStream: An End-to-End Neural Audio Codec
> I just compared 730 kb/s Flac with 160kb/s Opus, I can see no difference even on spectrogram

Doesn't Ogg Vorbis perform better than Opus on bitrates above 128kbps?
