NameNickHN··on 6 simple digital hacks to get more freelance work this year
I found the last "hack" (Bonus: suggest new projects to existing clients) to be very effective in the past. It really can't hurt to suggest features or changes to a client. If they are eager to improve their business, they will be interested in your ideas. That's also the first step to become a consultant if that's your thing.
NameNickHN··on Canada's ex-defense minister: Aliens would give us more tech if we'd stop wars
Sounds too good to be true.
NameNickHN··on What I’ve learned in 5 years of running a SaaS
Of course a SaaS is a "make customers awesome" company but you'll need use technology to make it awesome. Sure, clients don't care about the technology but that is not the same as "You’re not a tech company".
NameNickHN··on What 4chan thinks of HN
Why does everybody think HN users and 4chan users are two separate groups of people? In order to write those things, someone has to spend some time on HN.
NameNickHN··on Why college was the costliest mistake I ever made
Maybe higher education is not for everyone but I have a hard time relating to people who say that going to college or a university was a waste of time. Going to university and getting an MBA was the best decision I've ever made. I learned interesting stuff that I'm still using today. I launched a company together with a fellow student. I learned programming while doing that. I was referred by another fellow student to a company that resided on campus that contracted me as a programmer and product manager. That company is still one of my biggest clients. Another big client came from yet another recommendation by a fellow student. And apart from that, it really was a fun time.
NameNickHN··on Stop selling your Software for Peanuts
The next step would be to test if lowering your price has any positive effect.

Also, instead of raising your price, create add-ons that people have to pay for. It worked great for our software product.

NameNickHN··on Show HN: Hide all Snowden-related HN links with a Greasemonkey script
Day 1: Hooray for Edward Snowden. Day 2: No get the hell out of here. We've enough of you. You're boring us.
NameNickHN··on 25 year-old's company makes millions on cracked iPhone screens [video]
Stupid title. Should've been "cracked iPhone displays". I read "cracked iPhone" synonymous with "jailbreaked iPhone".

Also, nicely written press release.

NameNickHN··on Here’s Why Firefox is Still Years Behind Google Chrome
In theory it might be so but when I open a large number of tabs in Chrome it becomes sluggish. Not so in Firefox.
NameNickHN··on Germans accuse U.S. of Stasi tactics before Obama visit
If they could, they would implement something like PRISM as fast as possible. The German parliament tries for years now to establish data collection.
NameNickHN··on Traffic cameras bring Ohio town to screeching halt
There are apps for this. Just saying.
NameNickHN··on Police admit they're 'stumped' by mystery car thefts
> and should be hackproof

I always chuckle when I read something like this because if something has been made by men it can be cracked by men. It's simple as that.

NameNickHN··on Making Google’s CalDAV and CardDAV APIs available for everyone
This is good news, I guess, but I'll play the pessimist and ask: "How long will this commitment hold?
NameNickHN··on Six Figure Speeding Ticket
> Just because someone has money it does not mean > they will flaunt the law because they can afford > the fine.

Apparently, it does:

"It is generally the case that people getting less absolutely risk averse as they get wealthier."

NameNickHN··on “I was a Nazi, and here’s why”
Hm, down voted? For having a strong opinion about people who think they are above other people?
NameNickHN··on Six Figure Speeding Ticket
This is an interesting notion. Does this mean that wealthy people are allowed to put everyone including themselves and their families in danger because they can afford to laugh about the fines? I know from personal experience that while I'm shrugging off speeding tickets when I get them, they really cut deep into the budget of some people I know. Do you think that's right?
NameNickHN··on Six Figure Speeding Ticket
> Rich, poor, [...] all should be treated the same

They aren't and for a reason. Otherwise the rich would pay the same (small) amount of tax as the poor.

NameNickHN··on “I was a Nazi, and here’s why”
Following a movement or an ideology is fine but when you start breaking international law and doing crimes against humanity, you can explain to me why you did it all you want. I don't care. Somewhere along the line you stopped thinking (or never thought at all) and that's where you lost me.
NameNickHN··on Six Figure Speeding Ticket
Fines are meant to teach the offender a lesson. You can't teach a millionaire a lesson with a $50 ticket, though.
NameNickHN··on HTC One with stock Android
I really find this great news and I'm very tempted. The - in my opinion - crappy UI that comes with Samsung's Galaxy smartphones made me switch to HTC but even with the HTC One X I had a couple of things that bugged me. Most importantly the fact that it doesn't run the latest available Android version and never will.

I wonder, though, if offering the HTC One and later the Galaxy S4 with stock Android is just a move by the smartphone vendors to get those nagging nerds - myself included - of their backs. Especially since they tend to be very vocal. I'm sure the average smartphone customer doesn't know or care about software versions as long as everything works as it should.

NameNickHN··on Why flat interfaces matter
I think people are reading too much into it. It's a fad. The flavor of the month. Don't get me wrong. I like the flat style. Imitating real materials like leather or fabric in apps and on websites was fine for a while. I guess it came with the technological progress like higher screen resolutions and more processor power. But now everybody has been doing it and it's getting old. And who knows what kind of apps and what kind of technology we're using in a couple of years that come with their own new style (that is not flat).
NameNickHN··on Ask HN: Do you have side projects you want to sell?
Why do you think that is?
NameNickHN··on Let’s help Airbnb rebuild the bridge it just burned
What I don't get is how is a video supposed to verify anything? Why did they pick loyal customers to do the verification? It would be more comprehensible if they required it from new customers. And lastly, why don't they use a real id confirmation service. Where I live we can go to the local post office, show some ID and that's it. No sending personal data anywhere.
NameNickHN··on Where did all the HTTP referrers go?
In our case referrers can sometimes be really helpful. More than once a (potential) customer has posted a link to our website with questions or comments about our products. This allowed us to head over there and answer those questions or generally get in touch with your target audience.
NameNickHN··on Ask HN: How did you build a relevant audience on Twitter?
Pretty simple, really. First I've tweeted a couple of things like my own blog, other articles, news, comments, opinions - all related to my area of expertise. Then I searched for related keywords and started following other people. A bunch of them followed back and now I'll get retweets, replies and traffic to my site when I tweet.
NameNickHN··on Ask HN: How does a freelance web developer find clients?
One thing that really worked for me is doing customization and add-ons for a software for businesses I'm developing. It got me in touch with a ton of people. Plus I get to sell those changes and add-ons to other customers.
NameNickHN··on Yahoo's Design Chief Leaves Company
They've already started with the app icon of their iOS weather app.
NameNickHN··on Our Recurring Payment Pricing Was Rejected
Why not do both? All depends on how large the market is for each of those options. We offer our product (online appointment scheduling) both as Software to be downloaded and as SaaS. Two in three people prefer to download and install the Software but there are enough who have no problems paying a monthly fee that saves them the hassle of installing and maintaining the Software.
NameNickHN··on 19 Emotions For Which There Are No Words In English [Chart]
Or gloating.
NameNickHN··on How to Deliver Amazing Support at Scale
The first part of the article is missing the point. Sure, how you do support may become important when you have to scale. More important is improving your software/app/website in order to reduce the number of support requests.

The most important part of supporting customers for me is motivation. After thirteen years my motivation is almost zero. It's probably time to pay someone to do it but I wonder, what about their motivation.
