NameNickHN··on Ask HN: Name one product/service that you personally need but doesn't yet exist
Coupled with a time machine.
NameNickHN··on Anti-Terror Mode For Phones
> investigating these sorts of crimes

Those are not crimes in the usual sense and it's almost always pretty clear who did it. And we know what causes terrorism. Statistical analysis isn't going to help settling political differences.

NameNickHN··on Ask HN: Should I charge the military more to use my SAAS?
I sympathize with you and I think you should do it. But you should come up with a "real" reason other than "because I can". For example, I imagine the military requires a different service level agreement than the average company. That would be your price differentiation right there.
NameNickHN··on The Problem with Putting All the World's Code in GitHub
The comparison to the Library of Alexandria is misleading, I think, because even if GitHub goes under, almost no data will be lost. Every bit of code that is hosted on GitHub is being stored locally somewhere by someone and and in many cases by more than one person.
NameNickHN··on After Paris, Europe may never feel as free again
I already don't feel free and not because of the terrorists.
NameNickHN··on Charity claims it owns “Happy Birthday” song’s copyright
It looks like this will be the norm in a couple of years. I expect that there will be a time when no music or books are entering the public domain anymore.
NameNickHN··on Gaming company provide their overworked programmers with back rubs
Back rubs are nice, sure, but reducing working hours and hiring more programmers would be a better solution. A mentally burnt out employee with loose back muscles is still a burnt out employee.
NameNickHN··on The “Forever Lock”. Un-pickable lock with an amazing design [video]
From my experience: If it's man made, it can be opeend, broken, circumvented etc.
NameNickHN··on www. is deprecated
It must be so because often enough I see really ugly website addresses in ads like www.promotion.brand.com.
NameNickHN··on www. is deprecated
Why is this a thing? Why is someone trying to create a trend that we need to follow.

I make sure my sites work with and without www. In HTML documents it doesn't matter which you choose because the website address hidden in the link tag.

Verbally, I always omit the www, but when I communicate a website address via paper I prefer to use the www in order to make clear it is a website. I could use https:// instead but I like www more.

NameNickHN··on Einstellung Effect
In this context the word simply translates to attitude as mentioned in the article. Why not using that?
NameNickHN··on Ask HN: What project are you most proud of?
My own project: http://www.appointmind.com/ Panasonic and Honda among others use it.

For a client I've built and maintain part of the backends of the largest speed camera app and data provider in Europe.

NameNickHN··on Ask HN: What do you think of open office floor plans?
I think it's poison for a developer. I work(ed) for two companies with open floor plans as a freelancer and I try to minimize my onsite time as much as possible. Either I get close to zero work done or I have a splitting headache at the end of the day. Phones ringing, people talking, people walking, music playing - it's distracting as heck.

In my home office, which is a couple of miles outside the city, all I hear is birds chirping and rustling tree leaves. I guest I'm a bit spoiled in that way but it's a great working environment.

In my opinon, open floor plans serve only two purposes: lowering the costs of building and maintaining an office and keeping the staff monitored.

> Facebook now has a 2800 person room in its headquarters [...]

That sounds like a complete nightmare to me.

NameNickHN··on Ask HN: SaaS Customer Notification best practices?
For me it would depend on how long the downtime would be. When I deploy new code and change the database structure it usually takes only a couple of minutes. That's not something I announce days in advance if at all. Most of the time I simply deactivate the system, show a maintenance message, update code and database, and three minutes later activate the system again. Since I don't do it during usual working hours (9-5), nobody has noticed anything yet.
NameNickHN··on New top-level domains a money grab and a mistake: Paul Vixie
This is not surprising but I fail to see the downside. The internet is complex already. The new top level domains won't add much to that.

I think that there was no end-user demand whatsoever for more so-called DNS extensions, [or] global generic top-level domains (gTLDs)," he said.
I run a lot of websites and it was a pain to find good domain names in the last 15 years. With all the new TLDs that problem is completely gone.

There will be a time when the multitude of TLDs won't bother anyone. Limiting TLDs doesn't add security. Educating people about the dangers of the internet does.

NameNickHN··on Ask HN: What is the worst you poured over your keyboard?
Vanilla ice cream, real strawberries and strawberry syrup on a keyboard. Wasn't the same afterwards even though turned it inside out and I cleaned it.
NameNickHN··on Show HN: Appointmind – Online Appointment Scheduling
Not exactly new but with new features all the time.
NameNickHN··on Ask HN: How do you pitch your B2B product, when no one knows you?
I totally agree. I run a Saas from my home office and have some large customers (as in multinational corporations). They completely focused on features and service. There were questions about myself and my company but in the end it was the product that impressed[1] them.

[1] Their words.

NameNickHN··on Ask HN: How to distribute wildcard subdomains to different servers
Thanks.
NameNickHN··on Lenovo Caught Installing Adware on New Computers
That hope is pretty much gone, now.
NameNickHN··on Ask HN: How do you answer, “How many customers do you have?”
The other day I talked to a business partner and told him that our customer base grew by 150% in the last year. He then asked for absolute numbers. I just told him the absolute numbers are still embarrassing low and left it at that.
NameNickHN··on Best Resources to Learn Russian? German? Etc.?
> German genders don't make sense - why is a table a strong, proud man, whereas a mangy, flea-infested feral tomcat a proper lady?

This should be the least of your worries and - in fact - should be the last you should learn. Just pick one gender for all nouns. You'll be understood anyway.

NameNickHN··on Best Resources to Learn Russian? German? Etc.?
I had to learn Russian in school and for the life of me I can't understand why anyone would want to do this to themselves voluntarily. Russian looks weird, sounds weird, and nobody speaks it apart from movie villains (and that not even very well). But that's just my opinion. ;-)

I also had to learn French in school and it was beautiful. Hearing French and speaking French is just great. And it was tons easier to learn than Russian.

Later I taught myself English, first by watching Movies and later by reading books (novels). It helps with the pronunciation if you read it in the voice of a native speaker e.g. a well known actor. The English grammar I read up on some websites. I need English to provide support for my software products. In the first months it took ages to write an email and I had to use a dictionary for most of the words.

Having made quite a few trips to Spain in the last couple of years, Spanish would be the language I'd like to learn if I had the time. It sounds great and half the world speaks it.

And about that weird German language. Although being a native German speaker myself, I'm not sure I can recommend learning it. Nobody speaks it outside of Germany, Austria and parts of Switzerland and it's not great fun to learn something you can't use.

NameNickHN··on Ask HN: What project are you working on over the holidays?
Today I've finally found the time to add a long requested feature to the appointment scheduling system that I offer as Saas. It'll allow customers to pick and book multiple appointments in one go. As a bonus I'll make the look and feel a bit modern and ajaxy.

NameNickHN··on Why do people love to hate PHP?
Some people like it to feel superior and some parts of PHP make an easy target. Not to mention sheer mass of PHP scripts that make a huge target.
NameNickHN··on Ask HN: How to Promote your startup on a $0 budget
Only if your business caters to developers and the like.
NameNickHN··on Ask HN: What are projects I can implement to learn a new framwework?
Do something you have need for. It'll help with the motivation.
NameNickHN··on Ask HN: What have you accomplished in 2014?
I grew a side project (appointment scheduling) 150% and even scored a large multinational corporation as a customer.
NameNickHN··on My site is down because my domain registrar shutdown
Someone I know recently had a similar problem and contacted ICANN. He was then referred to a local company that handles these kind of problems. He had to provide some ID in order to prove domain ownership. Once that was done he received the authorization codes for the domain transfer.
NameNickHN··on Ask HN: How to handle emails from customers?
I know a couple of software and hosting companies that use http://osticket.com/
