Mythbusters··on AnandTech: Microsoft Surface Review
I guess the PC roots showing is actually the intent of the design. I have used Windows 8 and I can only imagine how much it will feel natural on a device like this. The metro UI invites touch interaction and the older office like apps will work best with mouse and keyboard. I'd prefer the surface with full windows though so that I can use all my legacy apps as well.
Mythbusters··on Why Surface is Not a Microsoft Business
Of course xbox has been made with such a model but I'd agree that it never has that price pressure that surface has.
Mythbusters··on Windows 8 is the new XP
I don't agree that there really is a big learning curve really. The training you need is about a few minutes with the computer to know to take your mouse to corners and the sides. Once you know the patterns its basically training your muscle memory which for me took a couple of days.
Mythbusters··on Windows 8 is the new XP
It depends on what kind of machine you are using. If you are using a desktop then yes a touch screen is not a very ergonomic way to use your computer but then the mouse is not going anywhere. You can use that to do everything a touch would do. In fact in that case the new metro UI is rarely used.

But when a laptop or a tablet is being used, a touch is very natural because the screen is at the right distance and more importantly at a "right" angle. In fact it is way more convenient to use a touch based laptop instead of a tablet because of the angle the screen is at and the arm rest that the keyboard provides. Try it out yourself. I have RC running on my old hp and it is pleasant to use

Mythbusters··on Zuckerberg admits: If I wasn’t the CEO of Facebook, I’d be at Microsoft
Quoting the relevant part of what he said:

“I probably would have taken an engineering job…[and] always had a lot of respect for Microsoft,” he said. “A lot of people from Harvard went to work there.” Read more at http://venturebeat.com/2012/10/20/zuck-startup-school/#tKVEq...

Not exactly what the title says.

Mythbusters··on 'iPad Mini' Pricing to Begin at Approximately $329
Apple has always proudly sold its products at a premium so I am not surprised. They will market it out with some snappy music and celebrity footage.
Mythbusters··on 'iPad Mini' Pricing to Begin at Approximately $329
Lack of any details on surface is sad but that is the game that Apple has played for many years. From what I have read about it, it seems the most viable product if you have productivity in mind.
Mythbusters··on As Microsoft Shifts Its Privacy Rules, an Uproar Is Absent
I use Hotmail as my primary. Hate gmail UI. Yahoo is really the one I'd like the most but I have been using Hotmail since ages and love the skydrive integration.
Mythbusters··on IE10 on Windows 7 available in November
I don't get why a rapid release cycle is important at all?
Mythbusters··on IE10 on Windows 7 available in November
classic HN algo. if anything related to Microsoft, trash it.
Mythbusters··on 10 hours later, Google Patches Chrome to Plug Pwnium 2 Security Hole
Guessing here but I think they have different SLAs. Microsoft probably spends more time testing and releasing something akin to the chrome stable release channel.
Mythbusters··on Notch: "I'd rather have minecraft not run on win 8 at all than to play along."
Signing the software is still different than getting it approved by Microsoft. I am guessing it's done by third party certificates?

I still don't understand what the concern is? The model you described is the app store model and though I partially agree with you the heavy handed behavior is only possible when you have a monopoly. I don't think Microsoft can afford that at this point.

Mythbusters··on What Kindle Means for Android
so that they can eat Google's lunch?
Mythbusters··on What Kindle Means for Android
I'm sure they would if they could. Amazon is not a member of OHA so google has nothing to enforce that ban with.
Mythbusters··on What Kindle Means for Android
Actually I think Google's openness is a quasi. Otherwise you wouldn't see them blocking the acer phone.
Mythbusters··on IE9 is better at blocking malware than Chrome, Safari, and Firefox combined
so are you saying its better to let download a (not so commonly downloaded) binary than to warn about it? Thank god you don't work on security software
Mythbusters··on IE9 is better at blocking malware than Chrome, Safari, and Firefox combined
what if the ad network has an incentive to not do it?
Mythbusters··on IE9 is better at blocking malware than Chrome, Safari, and Firefox combined
There's a link somebody posted below about how it works: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2011/05/17/smartscreen-17...

It's a reputation system for downloads. Sure its something a antimalware can do as well but given that most software/malware gets downloaded these days, makes sense to have something like this in browser

Mythbusters··on What Kindle Means for Android
There is a reason they haven't forked because there is a value in the ecosystem. What they have done is that the have starved Google of the revenue it makes out of android and that is where the opportunity is for major device makers which I don't get how they not see it.
Mythbusters··on What Kindle Means for Android
Are these savvy users the majority of the kindle users? Sense and Motoblur are but very thin skins on android. Nothing like a end to end experience that Amazon has developed. No wonder majority of people hate these quick hacks.
Mythbusters··on What Kindle Means for Android
The way android is used by Amazon is essentially how apple used unix core to get the basics right when creating a new software platform. A smart move obviously. What surprises me is how none of the big android players have not seen an opportunity here and created their own experience on top of it. That is the easiest way to differentiate yourself from the myriad of other cheap android device makers.

Im sure there is a lot of hand wringing going on behind the scenes for this to not have happened yet but its inevitable.

Mythbusters··on IE9 is better at blocking malware than Chrome, Safari, and Firefox combined
This HN. What did you expect?
Mythbusters··on IE9 is better at blocking malware than Chrome, Safari, and Firefox combined
concur. The dev tools and plug-ins that FF has are unbeatable. But then that is not what my mom/dad care about as much. So they still use IE.
Mythbusters··on IE9 is better at blocking malware than Chrome, Safari, and Firefox combined
SmartScreen is basically a reputation system. If not enough people have downloaded it and it's not known as a threat yet, it chooses to do the default thing and blocks it. That is probably what causes the behavior you referred to. But would you rather let a non-technical person not download a valid binary or let them download a malware?
Mythbusters··on Lumia 920 low-light shootout with iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S III
I think he is referring to the photos that they displayed on the day it was revealed. The pictures are there on nokia site and are equaly impressive. http://www.nokia.com/global/products/pureview/

This one compares it to iPhone 4s, but the difference is day and night here:

Seriously. Mapping on Nokia is stunning with offline driving directions and all.... How do the iSheep keep up with such mediocre product?
Mythbusters··on iOS6 breaks long polling

Mythbusters··on The Amazing iOS 6 Maps
What is equally sad is that people put up with this substandard implementation of a core smartphone functionality. That Nokia 920 looks more and more appealing at this point of time with Navteq maps an OIS enabled camera, the two most used functions on a smartphone.
