Mystery-Machine··on Apple Vision Pro May Now Be Out of Production
I first tried AVP in May and it was amazing! I was really frustrated by the price tag and so I ended up returning it. Fast forward to October and I found AVP for $3,000! I bought it and have never been happier. I use it every day for programming. The new visionOS that added the support for ultra-wide screen is insane! It keeps me in the flow and makes me more productive.

It's so difficult to switch back to just coding on my 16" MBP.

I really hope the product line doesn't die out and they keep iterating and lowering the price. What a stupid move, in the middle of high inflation and possible financial crisis, they launch the most expensive product ever...smh

No idea. If it was the new `popover` attribute, I'd understand.

Mystery-Machine··on 1Password joins the Rails Foundation: Strengthening the community, developers
This is amazing for the Rails ecosystem! Rails has been slowly dying, or at least it felt like that. It was like "Punk is not dead" (which it totally is)...dying slowly. Then there were some controversial decisions made about the future of Rails: no build, moving away from TypeScript, etc.

These moves were controversial and risky, but seems like they paid off! And then DHH had a great keynote on the latest Rails World... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cEn_83zRFw

We're back baby!

Mystery-Machine··on ICC issues warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas officials
I think gp, by "What effort?", means "Not much effort has been made to stop the ethnic cleansing."
Mystery-Machine··on ICC issues warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas officials
So you want to say that the reason for _not_ doing this is: it will distract from the effort to stop the cleansing.

Would that be the same as saying that we shouldn't issue a warrant against a school shooter because it wouldn't stop the shooting? Would it distract from gun laws?

Maybe not the best analogy, but I know that I cannot say for certain whether it will negatively or positively affect the effort. It might positively affect if this makes (especially EU) countries put more pressure on Israel.

Mystery-Machine··on Pg_analytics has switched to PostgreSQL license
Please update the title. Suggestion: Pg_analytics has switched to PostgreSQL license

When I first read this, I thought it's a smirk on pg_analytics being some kind of a wrapper around PostgreSQL and that they license and charge you for using it, kind of like how AWS is famous for wrapping various open-source projects and selling them.

Mystery-Machine··on Show HN: A macOS Client for HuggingFace Chat
I'm using Raycast AI (paid subscription) to interact with AI models through the use of hotkeys. It can even act upon selected text. I've got several hotkeys set up: - translate (selected text) to English/Spanish/Italian (3 hotkeys) - fix (selected text) English/Spanish/Italian grammar (3 hotkeys) - add (selected text) to current chat prompt where I can continue typing

There's also a built-in "Summarize webpage" AI action that I assigned a hotkey to and I can get a nice summary of the currently opened webpage without having to read the whole article.

These save me so much time and help me better my language skills. Especially when fixing grammar. When fixing grammar, it shows you the diff so you can see what you wrote incorrectly and how to write it correctly.

It also allows you to paste the text, from the app window into the last used app simply by pressing ENTER. I also use this a lot.

Just some feedback.

Mystery-Machine··on What's New in Ruby on Rails 8
You're right. Those shouldn't be completely ignored. They probably shouldn't be the only argument to make tech decisions upon. Did you ever build any webapp in Ruby on Rails? You should check it out!
Mystery-Machine··on What's New in Ruby on Rails 8
Pardon my sarcasm: You should work on WordPress. It's the most popular website framework in the world.
Mystery-Machine··on What's New in Ruby on Rails 8
Nothing is pushed. You can upgrade your Rails 7 application to Rails 8 today and no Solid* nor Kamal nor Thruster will be used in your app. It's there for you to use it. If you don't want to use it, don't. They released these new tools and, if you want to use something else, you can. That's the whole idea of Rails.
Mystery-Machine··on What's New in Ruby on Rails 8
I hear you. I use Cursor editor. I work with all of these technologies: Ruby on Rails, React, Next.js, Django, vanilla JS, jQuery, HTML/CSS, Tailwind...depending on the project.

I just spent the past week working on a hackathon where I built the project using a Node.js closed-source platform that uses Fastify edge functions and Cursor's autocomplete was terrible. Much worse than what I'm used to when Cursor makes autocompletion for Ruby/Rails code. JS libraries come and go every day. This makes it difficult for Cursor team to update their LLMs to provide good autocompletion. On the other hand, Ruby and Ruby on Rails have seen very few radical syntax changes. The syntax and majority of the API has remained the same.

Ruby on Rails is so much more than just fast scaffolding. The code I've written a decade ago in Ruby on Rails, I can still pick it up today and understand the project. I can also pick up anyone else's project and figure out the intricacies of it much faster than I'd ever be able to do in say Next.js or Express project. Express feels like writing assembly (no hard feelings).

I've, unfortunately, recently started working on a project that's written in Django. I thought Django is just Ruby on Rails for Python. Boy was I wrong... But that's a story for another time.

IMO Ruby on Rails is an absolute king! However, I'm looking forward for a day when I'll be able to use one language on both frontend and backend, while having the same simplicity and functionality as Ruby on Rails. (I'm looking forward for Ruby on Rails JavaScript successor, but it's just not there yet.)

The N+1 queries issue has been addressed in the latest ActiveRecord versions. If there's an N+1, you can set ActiveRecord to raise an error instead of making the N+1 query. Bullet gem, for years now, has also been able to catch the N+1 queries and let you choose how you want to act upon that.

It's true that monkey patching is a problem. I hear you. It's more and more problem of the past though. People realized it's too sharp of a knife and stopped doing that.

Mystery-Machine··on Filed: WP Engine Inc. v Automattic Inc. and Matthew Charles Mullenweg [pdf]
Why you don't share it? You said there's much more emails and messages, but you never shared any. Why not?
Mystery-Machine··on Filed: WP Engine Inc. v Automattic Inc. and Matthew Charles Mullenweg [pdf]
Since you're trying to get WP Engine to pay for "WordPress" trademark, by contributing back to open-source, because you feel they should, since it made them rich, I was wondering how many open-source projects did Automattic contribute to financially? Aside from WordPress, I'm sure you stand on the shoulders of giants such as Linux, nginx, MySQL, JavaScript libraries (or maybe you should call it ECMAScript, because you're not paying any trademark fees), etc.?

Just curious.

Mystery-Machine··on Tell HN: DigitalOcean locks your account for KYC
Update: after a little back-and-forth, where they asked me to provide a photo of myself holding my passport, and me asking them to tell me which unusual activity happened or what projects they need more info on (I have zero active Droplets, I had a few Droplets before). They permanently blocked my account and wrote me the following:

> Based on the information provided to us at this time, we are unable to proceed further with account recovery steps.

> If new information becomes available or circumstances change, we can review this request further.

> Language is neither static nor a series of rules to be blindly followed.

It's also not open to arbitrary subjective opinion. There are rules, this is not 'Nam. :) Languages evolve, but you can't just claim something is correct because you think so or you'd love it to be so. It's incorrect in English language, today. Maybe in the future, when more people start using the plural "octopi", it will be correct.

Fun fact: Oxford dictionary changed the definition of "literally" to also mean "figuratively". https://www.merriam-webster.com/grammar/misuse-of-literally

Mystery-Machine··on Wise.com sends email asking to give personal info to third-party
I have received an email from Wise.com with the subject "Enrol in free dark web monitoring"

1. I don't understand what "dark web monitoring" means. It could mean monitoring for my data appearing on dark web, or monitoring my activity on dark web or many other things... It just sounds very dangerous and shady. 2. "Enrol" is spelled "enroll". Usually scammers write in poor English.

The linked help article is about the breach that was found and how they, due to this, are offering this service now. The email also contains the deadline. Altogether it just sounds like a phishing attack more than a legit email from Wise.com.

The email contained this link https://bfs.cyberscout.com/activate (an unknown third-party) and an activation code for my account to use on that service.

Wise instructed me to use the activation code and submit my personal data to "enrol in free dark web monitoring". This sounds like a terrible practice. Normally financial and other institutions tell you to never submit your personal data to third-party. Also email "from" field can be faked (more-less). A better approach, in my opinion, would have been to ask customer to login into their Wise.com account and find the activation code there. Am I overthinking this?

To me this seems like a security issue, because an unsuspecting inexperienced customer will consider it perfectly normal to have to add their data to third-party websites when (a hacker masquerading as) their financial institution asks them to.

Mystery-Machine··on Psilocybin desynchronizes the human brain
And you know this based on what? To me it seems the opposite is true. If you have the means, it's more likely you'll do something. If it's too complicated, you might just give up, or not even have a thought that you could do something like that. Opportunity makes a thief.
Mystery-Machine··on Psilocybin desynchronizes the human brain
I cannot believe you actually wrote that. With your comment it seems like you're saying that it's pointless to hide the guns ie not keep them close. But then you also said that those two people survived. Have you heard the saying: Opportunity makes a thief. It's similar here. Except that it's not a theft, it's a suicide. I wouldn't dare to write what you wrote, knowing that someone might read it and take the cue to _not_ do any precautions before their trip.
Mystery-Machine··on One Million Checkboxes
This ain't gonna work for 1,000,000 checkboxes. You could try using requestAnimationFrame or querying only non-checked checkboxes querySelectorAll('input[type="checkbox"]:not(:checked)') or not calling checkAllCheckboxes for all mutations.

Edit: or just call querySelector('input[type="checkbox"]:not(:checked)') and do them one by one in some kinda while(true) loop

Mystery-Machine··on Ask HN: Is anybody getting value from AI Agents? How so?
He is NOT selling any courses. Can you please point me to any of his courses? He has a book he wrote about making software/projects called Make. This book is several years old and doesn't mention AI.
Mystery-Machine··on Show HN: I built a web app to open source travel itineraries
I have read the HN title and had no clue what was it that you built. Maybe changing "open source" to "open-source", or even better, figure out what you actually wanted to say and rephrase that part, as I don't _think_ this constitutes for open-source. It's just confusing instead of helping.

So I clicked the link...and landed on the signup page. Nothing else. Just a signup form. Would be good to have some context before asking me to sign up. Maybe some screenshots, some features mentioned...
