Mystery-Machine··on Rubygems.org AWS Root Access Event – September 2025
An entity that promised security had a security incident due of their incompetence to properly secure their production environment root access?
Mystery-Machine··on ESP32 and Termux
I'm trying to repurpose my Pixel 6a that I no longer use, as a Home Assistant Core main driver. I was hoping the author will talk a little bit about that.

I still haven't had the luck to have a fully working Home Assistant running inside (rooted) Termux.

Anyone succeeded to start `hass` and have it running without throwing errors?

Mystery-Machine··on A board member's perspective of the RubyGems controversy
Here's a little bit of nitpicking:

> I want to apologize, genuinely, to people who have felt (...) outrage (...) after reading some of what others have shared.

He's apologizing for what others have shared, not for what they (Ruby Central) did.

> I often go out of my way to avoid making people feel bad

"I'm the good guy."

> and so to be part of what's caused so much chaos lately has really been awful.

"_I_ feel awful."

"I'm sorry for what others have said about what we _did_. I feel awful for people being outraged" Amazing.

> this is a small group of volunteers spread out all over the globe. (...) It's just us.

You didn't, for a single moment, think about notifying the people involved that you are removing them? It's the very first thing to do - notify someone who's involved of the change in their status. If your communication skills didn't reach a level in which you thought that would be the thing to do, I don't know what to tell you.

> It is really boring stuff. So why do I do it?

So what? Should we feel sorry for you?

> I love the community. I love the people who use Ruby, (...) I love the people who give their time to Ruby and I love the people and companies who generously provide financial support for Ruby.

Cool.

> I can't speak for the board or the Ruby Central staff. But (...)

proceeds to speak for the board and the Ruby Central staff.

> Ruby Central has been responsible for RubyGems and Bundler for a long time.

This is a lie. RubyGems and Bundler have been maintained by a group of core maintainers. Some members of this group were also Ruby Central staff, but not all.

> It's not a new story that Ruby Central has been working on (or trying to at least) improve the governance model for Bundler and RubyGems.

It's a new story to me. If it's not a new story, do you mind sharing some links to past discussions?

> How do you tell someone that has had commit and admin access to critical infrastructure long after that need has expired that you need to revoke that access without upsetting them?

You learn some basic English. And then let them know. It's called communication.

> And what if other people who do still need that access claim things like "If you remove their access, I'll just add it back" or "If you remove their access, I'll quit".

It's called consensus. And communication. You talk. You speak with people. And then you agree on a decision.

> These are emotional conversations.

Yes, they are. Is that why we shouldn't have them? When you want to leave your wife, do you just leave? What a strong person with strong values.

> I wasn't a part of them and can't actually speak to the content of the conversations or how they were handled.

Bad. They were handled bad. Why did you write this post? You don't have information, you don't know what happened...you just love people and community and companies. Happy happy joy joy.

> we don't have a "communications team"

You don't need a communications team. You just need to have a communication channel public or private, where you can reach all of the core members. It could be an email with everyone in CC.

> A deadline (which as far as I understand, we agreed to) loomed.

If you're not sure whether it was agreed on, again, communication. Learn how to communicate. Which deadline? Who set this deadline?

> With less than 24 hours to go

Did someone give you 24 hours deadline? Why wasn't this discussed long before the deadline?

> Marty, Ruby Central's Director of Open Source

How the f is Marty? If he wasn't one of RubyGems maintainers, why is he suddenly being put as the main maintainer? Aside from communication issues, you also have decision making issues. All of the core members should come to an agreement, without Marty.

> I love this community and I love Ruby.

Cool.

Please find some time to read a book or two on communication skills. As well as decision making.

Read the comments in this thread. Ignore mine, don't think too much about it. Just read other comments. Then think again about your decision and to which percentage people in this thread agree with it. And perhaps reevaluate it.

Mystery-Machine··on We all dodged a bullet
Always use password manager to automatically fill in your credentials. If password manager doesn't find your credentials, check the domain. On top of that, you can always go directly to the website, to make any needed changes there, without following the link.

That was an unnecessary guilt-shaming remark.

Mystery-Machine··on PHP 8.5 adds pipe operator
PHP:

        $result = $arr
            |> fn($x) => array_column($x, 'tags') // Gets an array of arrays
            |> fn($x) => array_merge(...$x)       // Flatten into one big array
            |> array_unique(...) // Remove duplicates
            |> array_values(...) // Reindex the array.
        ; // <- wtf
Ruby:

    result = arr.uniq.flatten.map(&:tags)
I understand this is not pipe operator, but just look at that character difference across these two languages.

// <- wtf

Mystery-Machine··on Microsoft Introduces 'Copilot Mode' in Edge
Google already has page score for every website out there. What makes you think that their LLM can't be made to use it? That statement sounds a lot like "AI can't generate human fingers, it will never be able to generate realistic images with humans in them" or "it can't do X so it will never be able to code Y". Shortsighted.
Mystery-Machine··on Microsoft Introduces 'Copilot Mode' in Edge
You say "text interface" because that's what you're most used to. It could as well be audio interface.
Mystery-Machine··on Grok 4 Launch [video]

Mystery-Machine··on Ask HN: Anyone using augmented reality, VR, glasses, helmets etc. in industry?
Not really "hardware/engineering", but I use Apple Vision Pro for work every day, ~8h/day. And by "for work" I mean: I use it as an extended monitor, I don't write any software related to AVP.

Mystery-Machine··on Show HN: Most users won't report bugs unless you make it stupidly easy
Here's a quick bug report: I didn't know how I can check out the app you built. There were no links in your post. Only "Bugdrop.app", the name. I tried Googling it and it turns out Bugdrop.app is your actual domain. You should point that out: Bugdrop.app => https://bugdrop.app/

On macOS .app is the standard extension for any installed app.

Mystery-Machine··on Push Ifs Up and Fors Down
Terrible advice. It's the exact opposite of "Tell, don't ask".

Performance of an if-statement and for-loop are negligent. That's not the bottleneck of your app. If you're building something that needs to be highly performant, sure. But that's not the majority.

Mystery-Machine··on Coding agent in 94 lines of Ruby
Just out of curiosity, I never understood why people do `ENV.fetch("ANTHROPIC_API_KEY", nil)` which is the equivalent of `ENV["ANTHROPIC_API_KEY"]`. I thought the whole point of calling `.fetch` was to "fail fast". Instead of assigning `nil` as default and having `NoMethodError: undefined method 'xxx' for nil` somewhere random down the line, you could fail on the actual line where a required (not optional) ENV var wasn't found. Can someone please explain?
Mystery-Machine··on Coding agent in 94 lines of Ruby
> As a person who's dabbled a bit in Rust and Ruby

You say you "dabbled" a bit in Ruby and then proceed to demonstrate your lack of understading of basic Ruby syntax.

Mystery-Machine··on Show HN: Hyvector – A fast and modern SVG editor
Just tried to edit this icon so that the arrow is in the center of the circle. The mask wasn't properly recognized and so it only shows a black circle:

Mystery-Machine··on Only Teslas exempt from new auto tariffs thanks to 85% domestic content rule
Odd how sentiment about Elon Musk changed rapidly... Some HN users pointed out in the comments here that not even Teslas reach 85%. Is the article wrong? Interesting that everyone is talking about favoriting, but no one talks the anti-favoriting of Tesla during the Biden administration. Tesla wasn't invited to any EV conference that was organized by the previous admin. They are the biggest EV factory in the US yet somehow they were never invited...smh
Mystery-Machine··on Shardines: SQLite3 Database-per-Tenant with ActiveRecord
I use `site_id` in every model and keep everything in a single database. I think this is how Shopify started as well. You can see that because their product, variant, collection IDs are incremental across all shops. They might be using different solution today, but it feels like this is how they started.

What I like about having everything in one db, until it grows too big, is that I can do cross-users analytics/reporting. I also had it happen, like it was mentioned in the article, that I needed to share some data between users. Having everything in a single database made this much simpler problem than needing to move data between databases.

Mystery-Machine··on Microsoft subtracts C/C++ extension from VS Code forks
How is it not open-source?

It's licensed under MIT + VS Marketplace Terms: https://github.com/microsoft/vscode-cpptools?tab=License-1-o...

If you fork it and don't use VS Marketplace, it's only MIT. Or am I missing something?

Mystery-Machine··on Show HN: I reverse engineered top websites to build an animated UI library
The components looks really cool! However, you're using dark pattern by tricking the user with "Login to access the code" button. After I've gone through the process of signing up and logged in, I still couldn't access the component code. The same button then said "Unlock the code". Clicking on the button takes you to the Pricing page where you can pay $50 to see the component code. That's a dark pattern.
Mystery-Machine··on First Successful Lightning Triggering and Guiding Using a Drone
Based on this and other comments in this HN thread, harnessing the lightning energy for potential use wouldn't be a replacement for a power plant. However, if the resources for the lightning energy capture are/become too cheap, this could be a replacement for solar panels. Instead of replacing the power plant, it would replace/complement electricity production of a single home/building. Maybe with big enough batteries that can capture this energy, it could become a viable solution?

Mystery-Machine··on Damn Vulnerable MCP Server
Damn, what a great example of freedom of speech country where you cannot even say...words. I cannot believe nor express how childish it looks to me that in the USA you cannot say the N word. I don't even dare to write it here as I don't want to get my account banned. So sad. So much freedom...

Mystery-Machine··on DolphinGemma: How Google AI is helping decode dolphin communication
That's exactly the argument here. You do not think this is possible. I think it _might be_. You believe we cannot understand their language because we don't have "shared experiences" (etc). I believe we can. That's the disagreement. AI can learn/predict/invent new things. It already is inventing new materials, new protein structures, etc. We don't need to understand the exact mechanism 100% for it to be able to do it. Let's give it a shot.

There are tons of shared experiences and shared emotions. It's not like there's some hidden organism that we discovered are making noise from within the dark matter. These are animals in the oceans. Plenty of shared experiences and emotions. Dolphins have feelings. Anyway... let's agree to disagree. I fully support this project and am optimistic about its outcomes.

Mystery-Machine··on DolphinGemma: How Google AI is helping decode dolphin communication
The fact that you cannot wrap your head around something doesn't mean that it's not possible. I do not claim that it is surely possible nor that it isn't. But it sure as hell looks possible. You also probably don't have kids. For example: how do you teach a child to speak? Or someone a new language? You show them some objects and their pronunciation. The same with the seagrass and/or a scarf. That's one way. Dolphins can also see (divers with) some objects and name them. We can also guess what they are saying from the sounds plus the actions they do. That's probably how we got "seagrass" in the first place.

For all the word that they don't have in their language, we/they can invent them. Just like we do all the time: artificial intelligence, social network, skyscraper, surfboard, tuxedo, black hole, whatever...

It might also be possible that dolphins' language uses the same patterns as our language(s) and that an LLM that knows both can manage to translate between the two.

I suggest a bit more optimistic look on the world, especially on something that's pretty-much impossible to have any negative consequences for humanity.
