MyelinatedT··on Degoogle: Cutting Google out of your life
I use Google products heavily, especially Android, Maps and Gmail, but I have switched to using DuckDuckGo as my primary search provider. Have been using it as my default for over a year now and it feels like Google used to, before all the annoying personalised results and tinkering started ruining their search.
MyelinatedT··on Soli Radar-Based Perception and Interaction in Pixel 4
Maybe I'm an outlier here but I love my Pixel 4! Battery life isn't great, but the 90Hz screen is amazing and I definitely wouldn't go back to 60Hz if you paid me.

Aside from that, the Pixel 3a doesn't have wireless charging, so if that also applies to the 4a it's a total deal-breaker for me. And I really enjoy the performance of the Snapdragon 855 - especially with 90Hz forced at all times and animations tweaked to run at 2x speed, it's extremely noticeable how fast this phone is.

Not saying the Pixel 4a won't be a good phone, but the 4 is definitely better for premium features imo.

MyelinatedT··on A database of over 500 iPhones cops have tried to unlock
Not really. Google has invested heavily in making its login process as secure as possible. Unless you had a very easily guessed password and were unlucky enough to live in the same region as your attacker, it'd be very unlikely for this to happen to a Google Photos user.

That said, nudes don't belong in any cloud.

MyelinatedT··on New FAA drone rule is a giant middle finger to aviation hobbyists
The "drone blades" you mention wouldn't happen to be very large diameter model helicopter rotors, per chance? Because those are usually made of carbon fibre or lightweight metals, and attain blade tip speeds orders of magnitude higher than a typical consumer multirotor.

I have snatched my drone out of the air, right through the path of the props with my bare hands and sustained only very minor injuries (a few specks of blood, akin to a paper cut). I'd be extremely surprised if those kinds of blades (<15cm diameter) have ever killed someone.

MyelinatedT··on The Coronavirus Isn't Going Away – Interview with Harvard Epidemiologist
> an estimated 30% of infected people need hospital treatment, which is surely more than the usual flu

That sounds like an extraordinarily high estimate. How could we have an accurate estimate of hospitalisation proportions without even knowing how many infections are out in the community?

It seems very, very likely that we are missing the vast majority of cases given the tests are pretty inaccurate, and we only bother administering them to people who are either extremely sick already, or who have been in an "affected region" (realistically, every region is "affected" at this point).

MyelinatedT··on GitHub was down
Wow Atlassian... That is quite horrifying! Glad I stuck with GitHub through the MS acquisition. Bitbucket was probably my main alternative.
