Munksgaard··on Algebraic Subtyping (2016) [pdf]
I've been waiting for this paper ever since I saw Stephens presentation of MLsub [0] at ICFP 2015. I thought the paper had an interesting take on type checking, and it has given me some ideas that I've been wanting to try out for myself.

I look forward to reading the dissertation over the weekend.

Munksgaard··on The Path to Rust
> This latter point is particularly interesting; the Rust compiler will not compile a program that has a potential race condition in it.

I feel obliged to point out that this is false. Rust prevents _data races_, but not _race conditions_. You can read more in the Rustonomicon here: https://doc.rust-lang.org/nomicon/races.html

Munksgaard··on Glibc getaddrinfo stack-based buffer overflow
Can we agree that it's urgently necessary to rewrite most of the core Linux/OSS stack in memory safe languages? Exploits like this come up all the time, and we know how to completely eliminate them. I don't care if it's Rust or D or Go or Haskell or OCaml or anything else, as long as it's not C. The sooner we do this, the better.
Munksgaard··on Knuth: Computer Programming as an Art (1974)
Peter Naur (who unfortunately passed away recently) suggested the term "datalogy", to indicate that computer science doesn't necessarily have anything to do with computers, but instead is about the treatment of data[0]. The term "datalogi" is actually used in Denmark instead of "computer science".

Probably, I just don't know enough about MSBuild to write any yet.
Munksgaard··on Omnisharp – Tools and extensions to work with C# in any editor
First of all I should probably say that I'm quite new in the .Net world, and that many of my issues with VS could probably be alleviated. I just don't know how.

Mostly I think it's just about preference. I like my editor lean [insert joke about emacs being bloated here], visually non-distracting and customizable. I also try to avoid using my mouse. Emacs is all of these things for me, VS is not.

Munksgaard··on Omnisharp – Tools and extensions to work with C# in any editor
I've been wanting to get rid of VS ever since I started coding in C#, but I haven't yet figured out a nice way to build, test, and run my applications in Emacs. How did you handle that sort of stuff in vim?

Munksgaard··on Atomic Bomb: Decision – Target Committee, May 10-11, 1945
I was slightly curious that Von Neumann appeared at this meeting. The Wikipedia page about him has some more information[0]. Most notably, it states that:

Von Neumann oversaw computations related to the expected size of the bomb blasts,
estimated death tolls, and the distance above the ground at which the bombs
should be detonated for optimum shock wave propagation and thus maximum effect.
The cultural capital Kyoto, which had been spared the firebombing inflicted
upon militarily significant target cities like Tokyo in World War II, was
von Neumann's first choice, a selection seconded by Manhattan Project leader
    General Leslie Groves.

Munksgaard··on The mystery of the power bank phone taking over Ghana
I just bought a Nokia 105 for about $16 after my 6320 finally died, and I'm quite happy with it.

Battery lasts for ages, I'm not afraid to drop it, I don't get distracted by social apps and notifications all the time, and it just works.

Munksgaard··on Thoughtcrime
What about it? It is certainly detestable, and we should prosecute whoever produces it, but censoring is censoring. There are some good articles by Rick Falkvinge[0] that has been discussed here a couple of times[1].

Munksgaard··on Fearless concurrency with Rust
For anyone interested in session types, we are currently working on implementing a library for them, in Rust[0]. However, as you point out, Rusts types are affine, not linear, so we're also working on a compiler plugin for Rust that let's you track protected types and make sure they aren't dropped, letting you sort of emulate linear types[1]. Most of this is still in a pretty early state (neither actually compile at the moment), and there are some fundamental problems with the plugin (it's impossible afaik for compiler plugins to examine external crates), but someone might find it interesting. Eventually, our goal is to use these tools to solve some concurrency problems in Servo.

Munksgaard··on Shellcheck: a static analysis tool for shell scripts
This looks very helpful: bash scripts are notoriously difficult to get right. I wish it'd suggest best practices like `set -e` and the like though.
