MrVitaliy··on BankSimple moves to Portland
With average traffic/distance and ~25mpg, it takes about $6 for a round trip from Vancouver, WA to Portland, OR. Which would save you ~$4 on a $100 item.

However, for some reason, lots of people in general were fleeing CA at the peak of housing bubble.

MrVitaliy··on Nintendo: Apple's Latest Prey
Having wifi capable DS with ability to purchase games via some NintendoApp Store would significantly reduce games cost, since physical cartridge, box and game manuals are no longer required.
MrVitaliy··on Nintendo: Apple's Latest Prey
I think Nintendo's valuables are not in hardware (anyone can build a hand-held console these days) but in the huge library of very famous games.

If 3DS has lost the game, nothing stops Nintendo from re-releasing some of popular old games for iPhone (perhaps developing a descent emulator for iOS) and keep writing more excellent games in future.

Example: iD made another stash of green from Apple's app store when Carmack released Wolfenstein 3D for iPhone.

MrVitaliy··on ISP Bandwidth Caps are Really Rate Hikes
I can't disagree. Perhaps it's all the Netflix, Dropbox and Youtubes that are way ahead of what wireless infrastructure can currently support. And frankly, it is those cloud services that steal the spotlight not the ISPs.

Although, having unlimited 56kb connection and downloading non-stop for a month (maximum utilization on customer's end with whooping 3kbyte/s) would result in roughly 7.5 Gbytes of downloaded data per month. Which is still 4x the standard 2Gb limit set by cellular phone companies. Not to mention cheaper.

MrVitaliy··on Are Software Patents Evil? (2006)
I would argue that patent term should be roughly proportional to the time it takes to build something useful with it. Now, I know this is a giant black hole defined by "useful" but consider this: it takes much less resources (time and money) to go from patent to product in software than in chemistry or airplane engine.

Having a software patent term of 5 years is enough to have a leading product in competition even with software giants like IBM(start-ups are a good evidence of that). While the normal 20 year term for non-software patent, which certainly requires more time and money to have an upper hand vs big companies in already similar markets, should be left as it is.

Perhaps there are other industries where, for the grater good of human kind, they can apply some limit function on patent term, say Pharmaceutics.

MrVitaliy··on ISP Bandwidth Caps are Really Rate Hikes
Netflix client has been out on Android phone OS for awhile and is quite popular.

http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/mobilebroadband/?page=pla...

Default data plan for smart phone is $30/mo, capped at 2Gb/mo, on a 4G network.

Their maximum cap is 10Gb/mo for an outrageous price of $80/mo.

It is evident that the whole point of 4G network for Verizon is to bring their customer to the monthly cap at a blazing speed and start over-charging them by $10/Gb as soon as they can.

MrVitaliy··on ISP Bandwidth Caps are Really Rate Hikes
The default 2Gb wireless internet cap from Verizon is pathetic.

It is even more pathetic with their 4G network advertisement. All it takes is 1(maybe 2) HD movies from Netflix to hit a monthly cap.

MrVitaliy··on Spotify Sued For Patent Infringement Just Weeks After Entering US Market
That rule is easily circumvented. Just write a 10 line python script that references the patent. Release it as MyPatentApp version 1.0 and we're back to litigation square 1.

I believe that in such a quickly changing engineering landscape as software, best way to fix patent troll problem is to make software patents expire in 2-3 years.

MrVitaliy··on The End of Net Neutrality? British Telecom ordered to block access to NewzBin2
It's hard to imagine a different ruling in this case. Courts respect copyright laws and in this case there is a clear infringement.

What I don't get is the involvement of BT, they are just an internet provider. Why wouldn't MPA directly sue NewzBin2 and shut them down?

MrVitaliy··on Angry Birds Maker Sued for Patent Violation
It is obvious that the overwhelming majority of HN dislikes software patents. Hence, links like these are simply religious arguments.

If Angry Birds wins this case, people will complain that given enough money companies can ignore laws. If Angry Birds loses, people keep complaining about patent trolls.

MrVitaliy··on Cobra effect
Does anyone else see a possible corollary with Anti-Virus industry and virus writers?
MrVitaliy··on Samsung Galaxy S II – Over 3 million units sold in 55 days
Some of my buddies who have Android phones claim that poor battery life is due to the cheap background apps that come with the phone and run all the time in background. Even after those apps are killed, within few hours they respawn and keep hogging the holy electric juice.

Can you post a list of your default, background processes and idea on their CPU usage?

MrVitaliy··on How to steal a Russian airport
The only innovative company in my view is ArtLebedev studio (which does all the UI/graphics design for Yandex and probably sole reason for their success) and most people who work there clearly see the same picture and hate it, albeit not as vocally.

Yuri Milner - CEO and Managing Partner of DST (Digital Sky Technologies) is doing well because DST invests heavily outside of Russia, namely they are one of the largest institutional shareholders of Facebook.

MrVitaliy··on Pastebin abused
Why is it considered an abuse?

Here is a description on what service pastebin provides: "Pastebin.com is the number one paste tool since 2002. Pastebin is a website where you can store text online for a set period of time."

It doesn't make pastebin abused just because some internet individual thinks it is only for interesting source code.

MrVitaliy··on FBI: If you knew what your phone company tells us, you'd probably sue
The iPhone scare was about the availability of data. If someone finds/steals your iPhone they can with little effort recover the GPS data. As oppose to federal bureau or phone company who are, at least theoretically, bound by law.
MrVitaliy··on Mysterious US Helicopter Used in Bin Laden Raid
Council Shmouncil. It's self-claimed "nonpartisan resource for information and analysis". Which means they can BS as much as anyone on internet.
MrVitaliy··on Russia's Crime of the Century
Same ol' Russia. Not much surprise here.

MrVitaliy··on Birth and Death of Microsoft Bing
This was not the goal. Recall that they tried to buy Yahoo and merge into a solid competitor agains Google. I'm sure there are many smart people still left at MS, but not as many as you make it sound.
MrVitaliy··on Self-Taught Programmers vs CS-Educated Programmers
I think this is similar to why Silicon Valley is so attractive as a start-up hub. You have seasoned VC's (instructors) and bright peers as your self (other students).

You can do it all by your self, it's just going to more time to find funding and partners. Something your competitors in SV would have an upper hand with.

MrVitaliy··on Self-Taught Programmers vs CS-Educated Programmers
When you are self-learning from books, you only learn as fast as you personally can.

With an instructor (if lucky, a good instructor) you learn same material, but much, much quicker due to how course program is laid out, experience of the instructor, etc.

In the end, it's up to you and how you want to spend the time on this earth.

MrVitaliy··on Rate my startup: FaxIns.com, like Reddit for undigitized content
FaxIns, FaxOuts, you can't explain that.
MrVitaliy··on My Year as an Amateur Android Game Developer
If the game has been around on the web (under various names), why did he have to get a license from iPhone developer? It's not like iPhone developer "invented" the game.
MrVitaliy··on Moscow hacker who put porn on billboard gets jail term
I wouldn't be so sure they have caught the actual guy. They might have payed him off to confess just to look good in front of the public/officials. Russia's court system is corrupt and this type of behavior is especially prevalent durring the election year.
MrVitaliy··on Waffles - Machine Learning command line tools
Compared to WEKA (http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/ml/weka/), waffles look inferior. Weka has a much wider variety of classifiers and filters to play with.
