MrTortoise··on Adobe charges subscription cancellation fee
what are AOL doing these days?
MrTortoise··on Adobe charges subscription cancellation fee
this is not true i have a default for £40 for a phone sim that they charged me for for 6 months after i cancelled.

I do not owe them the money yet they sold the debt. Nobody cares ... I now have a default on my credit reference.

The whole industry is crooked

MrTortoise··on In Far-Flung Places, Covid Is Being Treated Early and Well. Americans Don’t Know
it opens by presenting unconnected things and then trying to say they all have a common cause - the drug its marketing

it them goes on to question authority and saying any care that does work is ineffective by likening it all to a different failure

it then proposes a solution to a different problem once again marketing its own drug.

yet it presents literally no positive evidence for its drug.

This is standard bs

'For 25 years, ivermectin has been distributed free in 19 African countries to control parasites. Is it a coincidence that those countries had 28 percent fewer COVID deaths and 8 percent fewer cases than 35 other African nations? Is it a coincidence that the 240-million-resident Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, which distributes free ivermectin, has a COVID death rate that is one-sixtieth that of the United States’? '

without a shred of evidence it is at best vague correlation, certainly not causative ... so is it even coincidence?

Are there places it is being used where it has no effect. Does this drug in those places effect some other factor that increases rate of infection - such as the illnesses it treats which arn't causative factors elsewhere?

MrTortoise··on Shopify says remove Stripe billing or get booted from their app store
tbh i read it more as yet another example of a platform trying to restrict the rigths of its customers to do every other aspect of their business in the way they choose.

I take your point - and its probably true. BUT when I use what is essentially a glorified website builder to build a site they don't get to tell me who i can put my money through or dictate anything about how i run my business beyond hosting and the builder.

The reality is that it is even more reasons for a business to not build a business that is dependant upon another in this way.

MrTortoise··on If Materialism Is True, the United States Is Probably Conscious (2015)
What I like is the way everyone has just accepted the inference that the us is made of dumb parts
MrTortoise··on If Materialism Is True, the United States Is Probably Conscious (2015)
There are many contexts where the same words mean many - often directly contradictory things.

Medical definition has a valid use. Does this one? I'm not sure which is whilst kind of true it falls into that class of observations and musings that are largely useless and meaningless until they can be exploited

MrTortoise··on Pure Digital CSS, Swiss Made, Clock – No JavaScript, almost no HTML
Very cool but the spacing is off!
MrTortoise··on EU Draft Council Declaration Against Encryption [pdf]
we value encryption

we like stuff to be easy though

for thousands of years people used codes that couldn't be broken

but we got lazy

wah wah

lets break security

MrTortoise··on Double Entry Accounting for Developers
chicken and egg
MrTortoise··on Manned fighter to face autonomous drone next year
most one sided fights ever. Just look at G forces.

drone could have higher max speeds, higher max acceleration. fighter was designed ... what 20 years ago?

Cost of drone? Cost of loss of either? total cost of ownership is vastly different.

There is real cause to be very afraid.

MrTortoise··on Vitamin D looks powerful, underutilized for Covid-19
A doctor should not refer to themselves as a doctor when a doctor of a different field.

That's just wrong and abuse of authority. If he did that on philosophy he'd be ripped a new one

MrTortoise··on Is MIPS Dead? Lawsuit, Bankruptcy, Maintainers Leaving and More

MrTortoise··on Open source tools, 67 of them, used in Microsoft Word as third party technology

MrTortoise··on U.S. Supreme Court to hear cases by telephone in May
as a fairly well off white dude i resent this attempt to make things less fair for me!

I like how fair it is atm. I fare pretty good thanks. (this is a joke before some muppet gets triggered)

MrTortoise··on U.S. Supreme Court to hear cases by telephone in May
does anyone still use telephone for important decisions?

its all f2f or video isnt it?

Expect more not less

MrTortoise··on Ask HN: Do you ever truly use your revision history?
No not in 20 years except maybe 3-4 times

Shitty codebase and lack of tests defining business needs require it

Also Devs with headphones on not starting decisions ... That way when people leave no one know why it is the way it is.

MrTortoise··on Ask HN: 3 yo loves robots. What robot for 4th bday?
That looks like it's the step after boost. It's more general and has more interesting bits from the pictures.

Bit old for someone that young I think .... Although I'll try her on the boost stuff I bet she would love it actually

MrTortoise··on Ask HN: 3 yo loves robots. What robot for 4th bday?
We have a vector. He's like our pet ...
MrTortoise··on Ask HN: 3 yo loves robots. What robot for 4th bday?
Lol we thought about that but my eldest put his hand in vacuum once. Got friction burns from brushes ...

So something like that unsupervised is a bit worrying for us.

MrTortoise··on Ask HN: 3 yo loves robots. What robot for 4th bday?
Yeah just got this for my 6yo, he's enjoying it but v hard for him to build. ... Then the whole needing an unlocked tablet thing.
MrTortoise··on Ask HN: 3 yo loves robots. What robot for 4th bday?
Yeah I've been looking at that.

Looks quite good

MrTortoise··on Ask HN: 3 yo loves robots. What robot for 4th bday?
Probably a bit young.

Kids are v different. One of mine would get bored quick because they move and it messes up her games.

The other would enjoy. We had a robot that took cards and had sine games on it. Both looked that can't remember it's name though

MrTortoise··on Ask HN: How many developers should you have before you switch to micro services?
You don't need team of X for microservices.

It's an approach with trade offs.

Made it work with 2 devs

MrTortoise··on Ask HN: Is web development still a viable career choice?
Yes find an area you enjoy, dive in and get good at coding with people, pulling people into discussion. Set for life
MrTortoise··on How DOOM fire was done
Q1 didn't need 32 megs. We had it running on 8. I remember working all summer to but another 8 when I was building a monster rig to goto 16 in 1998
MrTortoise··on How DOOM fire was done
Quake was completely playable on high end gear dx4100 and p60 was fine. Quakegl came about later.
MrTortoise··on Ask HN: Have I lost my skills in programming?
Low thousands? Is that really worth your time?

Buy post-it notes, go momento and discover that all is well - distraction on details is part of creativity. Self awareness of it is key to directed productivity.

MrTortoise··on Ask HN: Have I lost my skills in programming?
Give examples of problems and what you find hard.

The more I code the more I realise how hard it is. 20 years later and I can count the good programmers I know on one hand. Most of them think they are terrible also.

Programming is about delivering something that adds value to your clients customer.

If you do that without the latest sexy over complication that's pricey better than most.

MrTortoise··on Ask HN: Best robust laptop for everyday software development
you see i have never had to get a laptop serviced ... but then i don't buy apple.
MrTortoise··on Ask HN: Ever been the last engineer at a failing startup?
