MrMullen··on Roma Gypsies flee to California after Europe turns more hostile
Nothing sends a conversation down the path of, "I hate Hitler, but he did do a couple of things right", like when you bring up the Roma.

My mom and dad got harassed by some Roma in Spain and my dad, as he puts it, might have just killed one of them if they did not let go of my mother. I think that is only time in my life I have heard my dad speak of doing any harm to another human being.

MrMullen··on How the Sugar Industry Shifted Blame to Fat
True, but there is carb count and percentages on labels and it is not hard to figure out that something that is 4700% your daily limit for carbs is not something you should be eating.
MrMullen··on Obamacare Premiums Set to Rise, Even for Savvy Shoppers
My head explodes at this comment. You want to determine if people live or die just based on the charity they can get. How fucking barbaric is that? What do we live in, the 15th century?
MrMullen··on Unrest in Gabon leads to Internet shutdown
In small countries, especially in Africa, there might be only one or two Internet exit points for the entire country. It's not like the US where there can be a dozen or two Internet traffic exit points.
MrMullen··on Warned of a Crash, Startups in Silicon Valley Narrow Their Focus
What would be the best way to tell if there is a market crash about to happen? Is there a way to monitor for a decrease in Help Wanted ads or an uptick in vacant commercial properties in SV? There has to be some numbers before the crash that could tell you when the crash was about to happen. There has to be the proverbial canary in a coal mine out there.

* I knew the 2008 housing crash was coming when someone told my Dad that mortgage companies were not even checking credit history of buyers anymore. I knew that day, housing market was toast, but I did not know how to make money off of it.

MrMullen··on AWS Application Load Balancer
This is actually fairly common. ELB scales up as your traffic scales up but it can not handle tsunami levels of traffic. It can only handle incremental level increases of traffic. You have to contact Amazon support to get them to fix your ELB at a larger instance for the entire life of the instance.

One the major down sides of Amazon AWS.

MrMullen··on The Real Value of $100 in Each US State
I have lived in both and along the coast and there is a difference between North and South.
MrMullen··on The Real Value of $100 in Each US State
They need to break the states up too. Southern California $100 is a lot different than a Northern California $100. $100 living along the coast is a lot different than $100 living inland.
MrMullen··on FTC to Crack Down on Paid Celebrity Posts That Aren’t Clear Ads
> Companies are made of people, and people have human rights.

Companies are a fictitious, they are not natural, they don't exist without people or laws and they exist only to serve the betterment of society. Just because humans have right does not mean companies do.

> For example, we expect police to speak and act in a specific way when acting as policemen, but they are completely free to write and say anything under the 1st Amendment when not on duty and representing the police force.

Poor example. Police are public servants and don't work for companies, they work for society and all of society and how they behave off duty is an excellent reflection of how they would behave on duty. If a police officer posts racist Facebook posts, they can and should be fired.

MrMullen··on Humpback whales around the globe are mysteriously rescuing animals from orcas
To me, this is what it is. If young Humpbacks are vulnerable for a certain amount of time, being good at protecting them would a good idea. They can't risk losing that skill since every time they fail, a young Humpback dies.
MrMullen··on Netflix Billing Migration to AWS – Part III
I wonder how all that works out for Netflix. They must get a massive discount but do they buy reserved instances? or are all of their instances reserved instances?
MrMullen··on What Happened to Howard Stern?
Late career Howard Stern show is a fantastic show. Yes, there are the usual collections of low-brow humor, stunts and fart jokes. However, every now and then there will be an A or B level movie/TV/sport star on and Howard can spend an hour or hour and half extracting every little juicy story out of them. He can get people to tell all kinds of stories about their lives and keeps them on task and focused on telling the story. You hang on every word and every sentence and you just don't want to get out of your car when you listen to him. I really believe that there is simply no better interviewer than Howard Stern. He has the ability and the medium to do such a fantastic job.
MrMullen··on Some Silicon Valley Tech Workers Get Home Loans with No Money Down
It's all about the special stock since he does not want to part with it. That is how he maintains control of Facebook.
MrMullen··on China is challenging the idea that censorship thwarts online innovation
> He has taken a bit more nuanced stand recently. He says immigration of Muslims from countries known to be harboring terrorists should be restricted.

We already do that.

MrMullen··on Inside the Obama Tech Surge as It Hacks the Pentagon and VA
It is funny to explain to people that don't know anything about GPS that the government not only runs it, the Department of Defense is the steward of it. I guess people assume that something as "cool" as GPS system can't be owned and operated by the US government.
MrMullen··on Securing a travel iPhone
New screens are a lot cheaper than $200, which appears to be the price of iCloud locked phone.
MrMullen··on Securing a travel iPhone
According to the link above, people know they are buying bricks.
MrMullen··on Securing a travel iPhone
What do you do with a iCould locked phone? It seems like a completely worthless device if it is locked.
MrMullen··on Year-long road trip where it's 70°F every day in North America
Speaking as a San Diego native, it does get colder than 68 and it definitely gets warmer than 72. Summers can get a little hot when the Santa Anna winds kick in. However, compared to vast majority of places on earth, our weather is better.
MrMullen··on Amazon Has Swallowed Downtown Seattle
Having worked at Amazon.com, we used to joke that we could get anyone to move to Seattle if they interviewed in August. The summers are pretty amazing in Seattle, but the weather sucks the other 9 months of the year.
MrMullen··on Amazon Elastic File System – Production-Ready in Three Regions
It sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. The latency of NFS is just too high (Even if it is very fast for NFS) for it to be safe for a database.
MrMullen··on Sweden asks to meet Julian Assange inside Ecuador embassy
Dotcom is a New Zealand citizen facing charges within the borders of New Zealand. New Zealand just can't grab on of its citizens and toss them out.
MrMullen··on Scammers Game Amazon A-Z Policy By Replacing iPhones With Clay
I sell my wife's and my old iPhones and Android every couple of years and what I do is take pictures of the serial number and send it to the buyer after they have paid for the device. Sends a message that I have documentation on what the device is and I can report it stolen if they try pull a scam on me. It also helps the buyer because they can check to see if the phone is reported stolen before even taking possession of the device.
MrMullen··on Ask HN: My grandfather was a target of a scam using my information
This is why I have a Code - Counter Code setup with my family. I can give a message to any person and then say, "Say this word at the end of the message" and that confirms the message came from me. It's a little weird to do this with family but when you explain it to them, they kind of get it.
MrMullen··on Life in the People’s Republic of WeChat
At my last job, about 2/3 of the company was in the US and 1/3 was in China. Members of the China IT and Developer teams were always trying to get the US teams to put WeChat on our phones so they could send us questions and we always refused. They thought it was because we did not want them to send us questions after hours, but someone finally told one of the China Developers, while they visiting a US office, that no American would put WeChat on their phone because Americans considered everything WeChat handled to be accessible by the Chinese government. We did not want our calls and messages to be spied on by the Chinese government. We would not even tell them that over the phone because Americans just assumed that the Chinese government listens in on all calls to China.
MrMullen··on Being sued, in East Texas, for using the Google Play Store [video]
Logically, how is this even possible? Xplane does not own Google Play Store and Xplane is not aware that Google is violating a patent then how is Xplane responsible for the patent violation? This strikes me a 15 minute conversation in front of a judge. "Sir, I did not know Google was violating a patent and I have withdrawn my application after being told so" and that should be the end of it.
MrMullen··on Oil Traders May Be the Only Ones Who Want Yahoo to Survive
Can you record your conversations (I think you can)? But most importantly, can you use WhatsApp without a cell phone number? It has to be tied to your email address and not a cell phone.
MrMullen··on Moving Forward on Basic Income
You are splitting hairs. I pay into SSI and there is an expectation that I will get a certain amount out of it based on when I retire and when I die. It is known today what I will get out in the future. Also, since the Social Security fund holds a ton of T-Bills (Think savings account), the argument that people who are retired now are getting someone else's money is technically wrong. If the Social Security fund held no T-Bills and young people were paying into a fund that was then immediately paid out to retirees, then I would agree with you.
MrMullen··on Moving Forward on Basic Income
Social Security is not a give away. People have paid into SSI for years and they are getting their money out of it. No one is giving them free money and they free to blow it as they see fit.
MrMullen··on Apple, Microsoft, and Google hold 23% of all U.S. corporate cash
When a company like Apple has $200B in "cash" overseas, where do they put it? I mean, is there literally a giant vault of physical cash or gold somewhere or do they buy 6 month T-Bills or just put it all in a private bank?

BTW: $200 billion in $100 bills weighs 2,200 tons.
