More toll roads is the market based way.

Even libertarians hate toll roads in practice but it would reduce traffic in big cities. The suburban commuters flood the interstates but don't pay for infrastructure.

If enriching yourself is the goal they do a fantastic job of it. It's a plutocracy.

Do you really think the Board will nominate someone is going to cut their compensation?

In many European nations if you start a business and fail you will never get another chance.

The USA financial system that allow for bankruptcy is part of the reason that we are an entrepreneurial nation.

Failure is part of innovation.

MrFantastic··on Proposed “Internet Freedom Act” permanently guts net neutrality authority
All the examples of small ISPs not spending on infrastructure were small rural areas where the ISPs had a monopoly.

Why would they invest in improvements when they have no competition?

It's a total spin job.

MrFantastic··on Proposed “Internet Freedom Act” permanently guts net neutrality authority

MrFantastic··on Ride-hailing apps may help to curb drunk driving
My number is wrong, I just made it up. I think that actually number is more like 99.95% for a person with a .08.

My point is that if you didn't care about moral hazard, the odds are overwhelming that you will make it home safe even if you drive drunk.

I'm not condoning, just explaining drunk driving logic.

That 1/3 road deaths is artificially inflated because if you had 1 drink and well under the legal limit it still counts as alcohol related fatality.

MrFantastic··on Ride-hailing apps may help to curb drunk driving
I don't drive drunk, it's not worth the risk; BUT millions of people drive drunk every day and 99.999% get home safely so in their minds it seems safe enough.

It's not as if the instant your BAC goes over .08 you are driving like bumper cars.

MrFantastic··on Audi's unions demand electric model for main German plant
Car batteries have value to provide peak power backups for electric companies.
MrFantastic··on Why drug prices in America are so high (2016)
The reason is that private health insurance companies suffer from the Classic Agency Problem.

They want their costs to increase at a sustainable rate so that they can keep growing their Net Income.

Historically, private health insurance companies earn ~ 6% of their total revenue as profit. To justify an increase in their premiums they have to "miss" their payout ratio slightly every year.

Drugs that patients will take for life are a great way off locking in that increased cost in a "controlled" way.

Capitalism cuts both ways.

MrFantastic··on The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids
If cannabis actually caused mental issues why isn't there a huge increase in these problems in CO, CA, WA and OR where it's freely available?

The worst thing that can happen if you smoke cannabis is to get arrested and to never be able to get a good job or get a scholarship to school

MrFantastic··on Investing Is More Luck Than Talent
Short term equity is speculation. Long term equity is more of an investment.

MrFantastic··on Mylan overcharged Medicaid for EpiPen for years, despite warnings
US healthcare is natural local monopoly. There is no price transparency for medical treatments. Even surgeons don't know what the patient will be billed.

Plus most patients are not qualified to make medical decisions about whether a procedure is correct.
