MrFantastic··on San Francisco is spending $1.7M on one public toilet
Most people that own a $2 million home don't want a toilet for homeless people in front of their house.
MrFantastic··on Ask HN: How did you stop drinking?
The 2 reasons I drink:

1. I'm bored.

2. I drink when I go to bars to meet people and have interesting conversations. While I can make conversation with anyone, many people aren't that interested and it's boring to sit around waiting for something to happen.

I have hobbies but they aren't something I want to do at 8PM on a Friday or Saturday.

I only drink on Friday and Saturday and I rarely get hungover.

MrFantastic··on Why are so many adults acting just like children?
Axe throwing is an adult activity. When I was a child I only threw knives.
MrFantastic··on Understanding gambling addiction (2012)
It's hard to sympathize with people that play games in casinos that clearly state you will lose on average 3% with every bet.
MrFantastic··on Ask HN: How do you get better at debugging/finding a solution?
The biggest thing for me is just learning to accept that the problem exists and I will find the solution eventually.

Sometimes I allow myself to be annoyed that the code isn't working and that is the wrong mindset.

Everyone will experience problems but suffering is a choice.

MrFantastic··on Why none of my books are available on Audible
You can suspend your Audible account as well. This allows you to keep your credits but you won't be charged.
MrFantastic··on Things people blamed on bicycles
Cover the branding labels on your bike. The thieves want to steal expensive bikes, not a walmart bike.

I used white engineering reflective tape. They'd have to be very dedicated thief to notice to the Deore XT components.

Plus, the reflective tape is very visible at night.

MrFantastic··on Battery cost declines raise prospects of all-electric container shipping
Container ships witch ICE travel 20 knots/hr.

Sail ships average 6 knots/hr and wind is less consistent.

There are some companies working on Kites to reduce fuel consumption. https://www.airseas.com/seawing

MrFantastic··on Vets today are like doctors yesterday
Human healthcare has 3rd parties subsidizing the bills. This makes consumers price immune. Plus most surgeons can't tell you accurately how much the total bill with be because insurers pay different rates for same procedure.

Vets are mostly out of pocket payments.

MrFantastic··on How much health insurers pay for almost everything is about to go public
Private Healthcare is the Classic Agency Problem.
MrFantastic··on In defence of garlic in a jar
Even knife sharpening has Gatekeeping.

On many forums some people think that ceramic pull sharpeners will ruin your blades and you should use stones and oil.

I've been using ceramic pull sharpener for 30 years on the same $100 chef knife.

It's still in better shape than 95% of the knifes I've used in other people's homes.

MrFantastic··on Mastercard and visa are the de facto regulators of porn
We don't have a direct democracy nor should we want one.

The stock market is a type of direct democracy and look how unstable it can be.

MrFantastic··on Apple and MLS to present all MLS matches for 10 years, beginning in 2023
My local MLS has youth development teams.

Soccer will only benefit from the decline in youth American Football participation.

MrFantastic··on FTC acts against private equity firm’s acquisition of veterinary clinics
Most people would not know how to identify the most skilled vet clinics.

For consumers to make informed choices, they need to have some understanding of the domain.

If a Vet says Rover needs a XYZ procedure, how would the pet owner understand what a fair price is or what other treatment options are?

MrFantastic··on Largest airship built in United States since 1930s to take shape soon
I
MrFantastic··on Largest airship built in United States since 1930s to take shape soon
Airships fly 2x the cargo with 2/3 the fuel a plane would use.

You could have luxury travel with dance floor and bar in the front and sleeping cabins and air freight in the back.

MrFantastic··on Largest airship built in United States since 1930s to take shape soon
An air cruise over the Rockies or up the Appalachian trail when the leaves turn would be swank.

Slow float over Mt Everest.

MrFantastic··on Largest airship built in United States since 1930s to take shape soon
The irony is that 1/3 of the passengers walked away from the Hindenburg crash vs 100% casualty plane.

The bad optics in an era where there was little video competition really set dirigibles behind for a century.

Hydrogen should be the Lighter than Air gas choice for airships.

MrFantastic··on Ranked-Choice Voting Is More Democratic, Not Less
The 2 parties have also legislated to ensure only they can make it to the stage.

For a 3rd party to participate they must be polling over 15%. Dems and GOP allowed on stage often only poll at 4%.

https://www.debates.org/about-cpd/overview/

15% polling with the political machine of our News apparatus and the 2 parties is almost impossible unless it's a celebrity running.

MrFantastic··on The Coming Food Catastrophe
It's probably slugs and not squirrels.

Slugs will eat 1/2 a tomato in a night.

MrFantastic··on The Coming Food Catastrophe
My friends were talking about his. If a food shortage hits the plan is to consume the perishable stuff while massively cutting calories.

The goal is to reduce excess muscle and reduce the metabolism.

Rip off the bandaid and then the food rationing won't be as uncomfortable.

After a few days of fasting you lose a lot of your hunger.

MrFantastic··on The Coming Food Catastrophe
Rice will keep you full but our body requires protein and fat to live. Carbs are optional.

I Olympic lift so I always have whey.

MrFantastic··on A dirty dish by the sink can be a big marriage problem
It's ironic to me when women choose successful ambitious men to marry and then complain these same keep striving to climb up the corporate ranks.
MrFantastic··on The rising human cost of sports betting
Betting on footie seems like a long term loser.

The bookmakers cut guarantees you will lose over the long run.

MrFantastic··on To reduce student suicides by hanging to fans, institute in India removes fans
Living in 100F+ heat might with no fans might make you suicidal.
MrFantastic··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
I've broken 2 of those. Don't try to crush more than 2 cloves of garlic at a time.

MrFantastic··on The Middle East is running out of water, and parts are becoming uninhabitable
Disposing the salt is a problem however there has been some exploration of using the salt brine as a building material.
MrFantastic··on Under the skin of OnlyFans
I have known a lot of "dancers", I lived in a high rise next to an upscale joint.

The biggest problem is that their professional skills are fleecing men out of money.

"Who has deep pockets and how can I get the most money out of them?"

It's not like you can just turn off that mentality once they quit.

MrFantastic··on The unreasonable effectiveness of just showing up everyday
Your brains processes stuff in your sleep.

After some time off, I play much better the next day after practice than if I were to play immediately after practice.
