MonkeyClub··on Show HN: Craftplan – I built my wife a production management tool for her bakery
Yep the wordplay made me chuckle too :)
MonkeyClub··on Crime rates of undocumented-, legal immigrants, & native-born citizens in Texas
> and now I sit here not believing I actually did that.

Optimization comes for us all :) I also have caught myself repeatedly skimming and scanning for that one salient point, feeling like "ain't nobody got time for all that verbiage".

Too much info, too little time, so gotta optimize.

TFA's TL;DR is midway through the abstract (which is itself the old school TL;DR):

> Relative to undocumented immigrants, US-born citizens are over 2 times more likely to be arrested for violent crimes, 2.5 times more likely to be arrested for drug crimes, and over 4 times more likely to be arrested for property crimes.

Which is sort of understandable, the undocumented immigrant may feel under constant watch or even persecuted and self-police their behavior.

Anecdotally, I've encountered this in academic contexts, where foreign students were way more apprehensive and careful, while native ones quite loose with their behaviors.

MonkeyClub··on NASA's WB-57 crash lands at Houston
Implementing a mobile landing platform for commercial or high-speed aircraft is a theoretically sound concept for emergency recovery or weight reduction but faces massive technical hurdles in precision, synchronization, and infrastructure.

Just make a huge baseball glove to catch the plane as it's approaching.

Depends on which data center you're hosted.

The one under US jurisdiction operated by Hetzner US LLC must comply, while the German ones are operating under the GDPR, which has extraterritorial clauses can can deny or challenge the request.

MonkeyClub··on Heathrow scraps liquid container limit
Probably the reverse: obnoxious people who seek badge-given authority but fail police entry exams (e.g. the psych part), carry on to other forms of employment that offer badges and uniforms, but have lax standards.

MonkeyClub··on Why does SSH send 100 packets per keystroke?
You can absolutely see this pattern in Gemini in 2026.

Btw, is the injection of "absolutely" and "in $YEAR" prevalent in other LLMs as well, or is it just in Gemini's dialect?

MonkeyClub··on Apple testing new App Store design that blurs the line between ads and results
> I’m not willing to pay the apple tax any longer.

Problem here is that when you decide you no longer wish to pay the tax and want to exit the walled garden, you discover that there's a heap of functionality and convenience you'll have to let go, and add complexity and cost to your setup.

I actively avoided relying on iCloud even when it was the sane option, but many people that will feel like the walled garden is no longer suiting them will have to figure out ways to move files, emails, and (crucially) communication channels out of the ecosystem.

I think a large number of them will decide that it's not worth the hassle, and remain walled in. Which is the idea to begin with.

Sure, this is HN, and many will say "screw it, I'll Nextcloud my way out", but the genpop will remain within the gilded cage.

MonkeyClub··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
It is different, but it serves to elucidate that the rules we're living under aren't set in stone, they're only there because we, unlike the "no it's okay" bunch, can't or don't want to shirk them.

They operate under the "might is right" mentality, and by getting away with it prove in a sick and contorted way that the rules of social order aren't universal.

MonkeyClub··on Article by article, how Big Tech shaped the EU's roll-back of digital rights
Imho the indirection ends up removing the democratic aspect.
MonkeyClub··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
True, they're not alike, nor are the subtribes that are funneled into the two quasi-distinct groups.

But I think the methods by which they're being manipulated are quite alike, and ultimately forced to side with the current tribal figurehead simply because it's not the other tribe's figurehead, even if there are many, and legitimate, contentions.

MonkeyClub··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
I get what you mean, and agree that

> Harris and Biden are heavily held in contempt by most of the Left.

To be absolutely frank, I don't consider the Democrat party as "Left" in any (traditional?) sense at all, even though it may include Left and Left-leaning elements.

(But then again I don't consider Starmer's Labour as Left either, and one could argue that Labour is more Left than the Democrats.)

MonkeyClub··on Article by article, how Big Tech shaped the EU's roll-back of digital rights
Yep, EC rather than EU, my bad.
MonkeyClub··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
Yep, I came down to a similar conclusion in my thinking, and assumed they wouldn't have thought of the cost of restarting local industry, or of importing foreign (tariffed) materials for the local industry to work with.
MonkeyClub··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
> A lot of Americans believed the guy they wanted to believe in, because they didn't want to believe the people they didn't want to believe in.

It's sad but true. Deep down, political thinking is influenced by tribal thinking, a rigid us versus them mentality.

This is, after all, how the "divide and conquer" method gets to be so effective. A house divided amongst itself and all that.

MonkeyClub··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
> but I also have to say... to the surprise of absolutely no-one with even the most basic grasp of how economies function.

Exactly: tariffs are taxes in another guise. They only serve to create an (artificial) price advantage of local over imported goods for as long as they're levied.

> What were you thinking? What was going through your heads? I'm genuinely curious.

I also can't fathom why the crowd (not just a HN subset) that was clamoring for tariffs thought it'd be anyone other than them shouldering the increase. Perhaps their influencers didn't spell it out for them?

Now everyone gets to pay more - and not just in the US.

MonkeyClub··on Article by article, how Big Tech shaped the EU's roll-back of digital rights
Masks have been of for a while, but as long as the EU people can't vote the EU presidency out of office, it's to no avail.

It was a (steel and coal) corp affordances union to begin with, so it's no wonder it's pandering to business rather than civic interests after all.

Von der Leyen is corrupt yet shapes EU policy without backlash, and the citizenry is left to pay the price, precisely because the EU pretends to speak for the people.

MonkeyClub··on Raising money fucked me up
> A friend of mine has all these failed hobbies he tells everyone he’s going to do

IME over years, when you're talking about doing something your actually doing it is thwarted. I've noticed that that both with myself and with others.

Keeping mum and going about it privately, then sharing it when done, seems to have much higher success rates.

I've tried to reason through it in many different ways: talking about it satisfies you and you don't seek satisfaction from the actual implementation of the idea; talking about it "dissipates the energy"; and a number of other attempts at explanation.

But beyond explanations, the anecdata seems to suggest that doing much precede talking about. Even when you're developing something (say, software) in public, first you do then you talk about it in the commit message.

This seems to parallel the old dictum that ideas are easy, while working to realize them is the actually hard part. Who'd have thought.
