If you don't understand my distaste for colleges money sinks read this : alot of these are suicidal kids with degrees who did everything "right" by the authority figures they trusted.

Money, degrees, and productivity are not metrics of a live well lived. There are metrics such as self-reported happiness, marriage and divorce rates, birth rates, and other things that paint a much fuller picture. You need to figure out what is good for you.

Some advice to other women developers. Take the money from silicon valley, then run to a cheaper place to live. Invest it well, and relax.

ex. Buy a duplex, and rent one part of it out to pay your bills.

The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their proper name.

MollyR··on China Wants to Build a Deep Sea 'Space Station'
I agree, I think it makes more sense to explore the deep sea than space.
MollyR··on A Third of Valve Is Now Working on VR
My niece seems to love minecraft vr on the samsung gear too. I think vr will stick this time around as well.
MollyR··on America's upper middle class is growing
Why not mandate a child/baby license as well to confirm a parent has the resources to take care of a child as well?

EDIT: I think china did control population control, and if population control is a world shattering issue maybe we should look at it.

MollyR··on America's upper middle class is growing
Won't programmers just program something that just puts programmers out of jobs. ex. Google Deepmind being trained to program itself https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22429932-200-computer...

Personally I think the speed of technological progress is just too much for a multigenerational society to adapt with.

MollyR··on “But he does good work.”
Probably because people have been encouraged to think of coworkers as friends or family. My personal suspicion is simply the rise of social media enables mob like behavior over due process and rule of law.
MollyR··on Ask HN: How do you take notes other than using paper?
Video recorded with my cell phone (ask if your professor is okay with it). Also took notes by hand, something about writing down helped with memory retention. Followed it up with manual conversion into flashcards in anki http://ankisrs.net/ .
MollyR··on Microsoft is testing a new mosquito trap to fight Zika
Just wondering, why microsoft is spending resources on this, rather than its flagship products. It feels like a pr move.
MollyR··on Nanorods: water-oozing material could help quench thirst
I often wonder if this matters anymore, since food has a high amount of salt, and minerals.
MollyR··on Statement by Jill Bähring Regarding Jacob Appelbaum
Wow. just wow. I feel ashamed for making up my mind too quickly.
MollyR··on Bias Against Novelty in Science
I agree, I have some experience from doing medical research, and this seems like a given to me. My friends who work in the softer sciences like psychology have different opinions though, since they often work in degree's of correctness.
MollyR··on Celery, non-blocking code and quest against coroutines
Not just setting up, but celery has a learning curve which may or may not be worth your time. Also you have an additional points of complexity (rabbitmq and celery workers) that also have an additional operations maintenance burden. For a small app that doesn't have to scale, I'd avoid it. But when building a business focused web app, I use it a lot, especially for large file parsing.
MollyR··on Celery, non-blocking code and quest against coroutines
Its an interesting use case the author solved with celery.

I've used celery with a few django and flask projects. It's nice, but it added a lot of overhead for me. So I've used http://flower.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ to help handle the monitoring.

For some really small sites and very specific use cases, I actually wrote some small custom helper scripts to just have cron jobs.

If you are using django, I found this library helpful. https://bitbucket.org/wnielson/django-chronograph/

MollyR··on Obesity rising in American women
Maybe the title should be changed to match the actual paper title "Trends in Obesity Among Adults in the United States 2005 to 2014" ?

EDIT: as some people mentioned below that the title does match a sentence in the conclusion. The study is still for women and men, and has interesting cross-sectional data for both.

MollyR··on Women Who Code (YC S16) helps female engineers level up in their careers
Why do we have to work on the equality of outcome ? Isn't equality of opportunity enough ?

My friends who are nurses wanted to be nurses, they didn't want to go medical school. They didn't want to wait to make money until their 30's, they considered career paths in relation to having a family. As long as they had the option, I don't see why forcing outcome is important here.

As for helping men into nursing, if diversity is good in one field its probably helpful in another. Men might want a male nurse who can emphasize with male concerns. Being a woman, I'm just taking guesses here, like prostate issues, balding, infertility, and whatever else.

Maybe we should help men get into fields like nursing and teaching. So boys and girls both have role models in lots of fields.

I get the historical context, but I don't think forcing an over reaction in the other direction is better. I think we all benefit from choices and freedom.

MollyR··on Why does everyone here seem to dislike C++?
Interesting workflow. Whats your preferred subset ?
MollyR··on Women Who Code (YC S16) helps female engineers level up in their careers
I've never been pregnant myself (yet).

But I have friends who are new mothers, who say they can't imagine leaving their newborn child, who they carried for nine months. It's a special bond, and most of them wanted to be stay at home moms after.

Only a few went back to work because they had financial issues due to costs from delivery complications.

MollyR··on Women Who Code (YC S16) helps female engineers level up in their careers
This is a little weird comment to me. I have lots of friends who are nurses that make 90k and higher on the east cost, and have way more prestige, class, respect from other people than me a software engineer.

its a good link. thanks for it. I always felt like something was wrong with the original xkcd one.
MollyR··on How I turned “Street Sharks” into an online social experiment
Not sure I understand. Isn't memory of experience different than our believing it ?

Or is it something like there isn't "truth" in our memory ?

MollyR··on How I turned “Street Sharks” into an online social experiment
But who moderates the moderators ?

In this article, the author mentioned he became an editor for street sharks to help him spread his lies.

MollyR··on How I turned “Street Sharks” into an online social experiment
I'm still wondering if its really the malleability of human memory or our need to fit in / social pressure to conform ?
MollyR··on How I turned “Street Sharks” into an online social experiment
A little scary what this implies about groups of people with axes to grind on places like wikipedia.
MollyR··on Peter Thiel, Tech Billionaire, Reveals Secret War with Gawker
I noticed this too, but I'm not sure what it means.
MollyR··on Peter Thiel, Tech Billionaire, Reveals Secret War with Gawker
Gawker defended posting Hogan's sex tape even when a judge told them to take it down, AND also condemned people for the fappening. Hypocrisy at its finest.
MollyR··on An industry that helps Chinese cheat their way into and through US colleges
When I went to college, I saw smart people who not only studied insanely hard, but ALSO took adderall AND cheated just to stomp out the competition. I saw a few friends end up in the hospital, but they had no regrets.

Sometimes it's not only skill, but what they think they should pay you. I've seen more skilled candidates avoided because my company didn't want to pay them their worth.
