If you don't understand my distaste for colleges money sinks read this : alot of these are suicidal kids with degrees who did everything "right" by the authority figures they trusted.

Money, degrees, and productivity are not metrics of a live well lived. There are metrics such as self-reported happiness, marriage and divorce rates, birth rates, and other things that paint a much fuller picture. You need to figure out what is good for you.

Some advice to other women developers. Take the money from silicon valley, then run to a cheaper place to live. Invest it well, and relax.

ex. Buy a duplex, and rent one part of it out to pay your bills.

The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their proper name.

MollyR··on Introducing “Ask a Female Engineer”
I resent your comment about immigrants, it comes off as extremely racist.

I'm a woman, My brother and I are first generation korean-american developers, and were trained by our father to be computer literate, so we could get jobs. He taught us life isn't easy.

We experienced some racism, low ball offers, horrible working conditions. Both of our working circumstances don't seem that different then yours.

But it's crystal clear to me a lot of the working conditions for developers just suck in general. My brother and a few of his friends attempted suicide, he worked in silicon valley for a startup, his friends worked all over the place. He was bullied and threatened by his boss. My father had to drag my brother back home on the east coast to take care of him. My brother still isn't the same even years later.

Hell, Just listen to some of the horror stories from amazon.

MollyR··on Introducing “Ask a Female Engineer”
As for the danger part. It sounds like men are socially forced to accept danger and risk, I doubt most men really want to do it, but they are forced to be providers while us women are socially forced to be caretakers.
MollyR··on Introducing “Ask a Female Engineer”
Yea, my HR department has it in our contract. My last place had it so no couples were allowed in the same department.
MollyR··on Introducing “Ask a Female Engineer”
It's honestly hard to tell sometimes. People are emotionally complex, and life is messy. But there is a reason office romances typically have HR rules in a lot of companies.
MollyR··on Introducing “Ask a Female Engineer”
I think you need an editor with notes about HR approved behavior too, in case some given advice is less than good.
MollyR··on Introducing “Ask a Female Engineer”
Yea I was thinking about that. I think if their advice was screened by HR, it might be a lot more valuable for guys.
MollyR··on Introducing “Ask a Female Engineer”
I agree. This is bad advice. If the whole team is going, sure, but as a woman this sounds like the setup to a date.

Really hope guys reading this article, understand a lot of women are different, and to take what they are saying with a grain of salt.

MollyR··on Ten million Raspberry Pis
I have three that are collecting dust. I had plans to build a supergamegirl, but with tablets so cheap, and work so busy . . .my ambitions for the pi's just died.

I also ended up buying a 50 dollar ubuntu intel computer stick which was great, and replaced the raspberry pi for emulation.

I have a friend who has a 3d printer and tons of electrical engineering gear, who just loves his, and does tons of products with them.

MollyR··on Japan home to 541,000 young recluses
Are you suggesting endocrine disruptors are affecting mental health ? That would be an interesting study. Especially since we have research suggesting the gut(microbiome) plays a role in mental health.
MollyR··on South Korea’s biggest shipping line has filed for bankruptcy protection
Do you think South Korea will intervene ?
MollyR··on South Korea’s biggest shipping line has filed for bankruptcy protection
Wow, Does anyone know what this means for the dry baltic index. A bunch of shipping companies look like they are pretty close themselves to bankruptcy.
MollyR··on A Message to the Apple Community in Europe
precedent has to be set somewhere.
MollyR··on A Message to the Apple Community in Europe
They probably will be next.

I can't say I approve of corporate or tax inversion, and I'm not sure what to think of this article. I've read countless articles saying the opposite http://www.theverge.com/2016/5/5/11604704/apple-tax-evasion-...
MollyR··on The highest paid workers in Silicon Valley are not software engineers
This is a bad sign. I hope its not another sign of a bubble.
MollyR··on New Virus Breaks the Rules of Infection
Wow that's crazy. It could explain why certain viruses affect people and not others. The afflicted could have latent viral compatible genes in their personal genomes. It'll be really interesting what this means for vaccines.
MollyR··on It’s time EU laws caught up with technology
Yet we still have strong pushes from the government on the radical TPP and TTIP. I fear they want to update the law to catch up with technology but not in pro-consumer or pro-citizen way.
MollyR··on Evidence for Africans in Britain from the Bronze Age to the Medieval Period
I thought a significant portion of north africans are genetically arab.
MollyR··on How to be mediocre and be happy with yourself
Or genetic engineering via crispr and designer babies.

MollyR··on Why Millions of Men Lose Friends in Their Twenties (2015)
I think you nailed it. I made friends in college, but everyone got married in their late twenties, and friendships just sort of died.
MollyR··on Registered Replication Report – Facial Feedback Hypothesis [pdf]
Sigh. I wish I could explain this better to my business managers who read PopSci like this, and try to remold the business to follow them.
MollyR··on Questioning the value of sports is seen as blasphemy
Maybe. I was a little surprised at the amount of people I know who are watching the Olympics via less than legal means simply because NBC's coverage and commentary were terrible .
MollyR··on America’s housing system still has not been properly reformed
Thanks didn't know about that, and podcast link is super great!
MollyR··on To Seattle Millennials, the Future Looks Scary
That's good point about voting. After the Brexit, I heard a lot of journalists say old people shouldn't vote, but never thought to consider if young people should either.
MollyR··on To Seattle Millennials, the Future Looks Scary
I wanted to be an artist. It often kills me I couldn't follow my dreams, but I often looks back and I'm thankful I choose to follow a profession for job security rather then wishful thinking. I think it was a strong side effect of growing up in poor household.
MollyR··on Zika infection may affect adult brain cells
If this is true, this is a real nightmare for workers in the knowledge economy. One of my biggest fears is contagious virus that attacks brain neurons.
MollyR··on America’s housing system still has not been properly reformed
It would cause alot of anger. I hear a lot of hatred at work towards the baby boomers about everything
MollyR··on DjangoCon US 2016 Videos
It looks like all the videos have been uploaded 30ish. I really wish there were more technical videos, most of the nontechnical videos I've heard before.

The real value of djangocon to me was getting technical advice for hard problems at work, usually ones I never even saw coming.

I can't say I like the direction this djangocon took.

MollyR··on Technology was meant to herald a new way of working, but that’s not the case
I agree for the most part, but I also think we want somebody not only to control, but to blame for failure.
MollyR··on Humble Book Bundle: The Joy of Coding
For the poorer hackernews users. some of those books are free online anyways.
