Mildlypolite··on What happens when society collapses (2021)
Yep, I mean we are in 2022.

The only kool aid you can drink is that the problem is not as severe as someone says.

In the meanwhile we are having a drought in Italy, that will decrease our agricultural production by 30%,some zones by 50%.

Of course, we have a problem.

Mildlypolite··on History and effective use of Vim (2019)
Can I ask what kkk means?

I thought it meant that you were laughing like haha (a leas in Brazil)

I didn't know it had bad connotations

Mildlypolite··on UN warns of ‘Total Societal Collapse’ due to breaching of planetary boundaries
Yes, it would be interesting. There are huge political pressures...in the wrong direction.
Mildlypolite··on UN warns of ‘Total Societal Collapse’ due to breaching of planetary boundaries
"In all of these scenarios except for ‘stable earth’, the achievement of global targets and accompanying frameworks is negatively impacted,” the report states. “Furthermore, in the absence of change, scenarios ‘Earth under uncertainty’ and ‘Earth under threat’ tend towards that of ‘global collapse’.”

The paper explains that, by adopting a systems analysis, it is possible to see how “the crossing of one planetary boundary systematically results in the crossing of others”. They are crucial to providing a ‘safe operating space’ for human societies to develop within a stable earth system, “with the passing of these boundaries subsequently, and most likely resulting in societal destabilisation and potential GCR events”.

Global Catastrophic Risk (GCR) events are defined as those leading to more than 10 million fatalities or greater than $10 trillion in damages."

We should stop being in denial about this and think about adaptation strategies and, of course, force the industry to change.

It seems like the Fermi paradox has a reason, after all.

Mildlypolite··on MIT scientists think they’ve discovered how to fully reverse climate change
Yes the techno fixes are untested and, therefore, with completely unpredictable consequences.

Especially when we are trying to modify something complex as our climate.

Mildlypolite··on We Need to Stop Pretending we can Limit Global Warming to 1.5°C
It's not a falsehood, it's a scenario with a probability, a high probability for some places (the equator) and a lower one for others.

We have to consider every scenario, if not we are the one deluding ourselves.

Mildlypolite··on We Need to Stop Pretending we can Limit Global Warming to 1.5°C
"Overshoot

The world will not end when we warm beyond 1.5°C. What will happen is that more people will suffer and die along with countless other species we share the biosphere with. Some tipping elements in the climate system may be activated such as the disintegration of Greenland and Western Antarctic Ice Sheets."

There are other feedback loops which can be activated like the permafrost one. https://www.thearcticinstitute.org/global-carbon-budget-perm...

Mildlypolite··on Childhood antibiotics as a risk factor for Crohn's disease: Cohort study
Two words : fecal transplant.
Mildlypolite··on Childhood antibiotics as a risk factor for Crohn's disease: Cohort study
My advice is to go to microbiome experts like Dr Borody, he has a lot more tools to help like fecal transplants and antibiotica for Crohn (long story, look at his videos). Borody is the one who invented the triple antibiotics therapy for the helicobacter pylori.
Mildlypolite··on Study argues insects feel pain, raises questions around ethical farming
I am pretty sure my bees feel pain and not just a "reflex", I couldn't prove it before.

I hope this will be proved in a definitive way.

Mildlypolite··on Italy declares state of emergency in drought-hit northern regions
Italy has declared a state of emergency in five northern regions and announced emergency funds over a worsening drought that has plagued the Po valley in recent weeks.

The drought is connected to climate change and a few days ago Marmolada glacier collapsed killing 6 people and other 10 dispersed.

Mildlypolite··on Outdoor Tennis Could Be Sports’ First Big Climate Change Casualty
Is it obvious only to me that we will have much bigger problems like a food crisis?

I don't want to ruin it for you but tennis will be the last of our problems...

Here in Italy we are having one of the most severe drought in years, one of our glacier has just collapsed killing a lot of people and we are thinking about...tennis?

Mildlypolite··on End-of-life smartphone? Penguins at PostmarketOS aim to revive it
Great, I am trying to do the same thing because the rhythm of Change is unsustainable in every possible way (ecologically, but also, I want to master my skills on the instruments I use everyday and this is not possible when something change every year).
Mildlypolite··on The firefly population could be declining
Could? Is that a joke?

(a very cruel and bad taste joke)

Mildlypolite··on Ask HN: What has been your experience with chronic fatigue syndrome?
My cfs started after atrip too, in my case in a zone known as an hotspot of lyme disease. It took me 10 years to understand that it was lyme and not cfs, the first test I did for lyme was specific for the American species and came back negative, finally the proper test for the 3 European species was done and came back positive.

That was pretty much a nightmare. With relatives and friends accusing me of being lazy whilei couldn't even walk.

Mildlypolite··on What’s the best sub 1k laptop?
I vote for a used thinkpad!
Mildlypolite··on Ask HN: What has been your experience with chronic fatigue syndrome?
I've got a diagnosis of cfs for many years.

In the end it turned to be lyme disease and pots (disautonomia)

I've got a long cycle of antibiotics for lyme disease and they helped me a lot.

But pots remained, I am still taking drugs for it. I'll have it all my life. But I've found I can manage it through exercise.

Before antibiotics I was so tired that any amount of exercise would bed ridden me for weeks. I was very ill.

Mildlypolite··on Chainless electric drive system “Free Drive” for bicycles (2021)
Hi, I remember that an app similar to what you are talking about were developed for the specialized evo ebikes. You could set a fixed power output and if you went higher the motor would come in to help you stay in the power You choose. Pretty cool.
Mildlypolite··on Van life (cancer edition) finale

Mildlypolite··on Climate change: IPCC scientists say it's 'now or never' to limit warming
They also say that the technology is here right now to decrease co2 emissions significantly.

Here in Italy ENEL (the major electricity provider) proposed a huge investment in renewables that could decrease the cost of electricity by 40%, create 80.000 jobs, just by authorising renewable projects which are already proposed and waiting authorization. This would increase the percentage of renewable energy to 70%.

This is not impossible at all.

Mildlypolite··on Ask HN: What book changed your life?
Dostoevsky 's crime and punishment has taught me a lot about the human spirit.

I've nothing practical to say that the book taught me but the consequences in real life of what dostoevsky has taught me are innumerable and at the same time too subtle to talk about them. I learnt the meaning of love (a romantic and deep one) but also the meaning of hate, self destruction. What nihilism is and what are its consequences. Human spirit is complex and I feel that today's society tend to simplify it in a very rough way.

Mildlypolite··on Shell’s carbon capture plant is emitting more than it’s capturing
Exactly it's just a scam (until now).
Mildlypolite··on Multiple Sclerosis Causality
Well actually Dr. Borody discovered a treatment for Crohn that consists of long term abx. He says there are slow growing bacteria that causes it. https://youtu.be/crm4pKz6X2M

He is the inventor of the triple abx therapy for H.pilory so I would listen to what he says.

Mildlypolite··on Multiple Sclerosis Causality
As someone with an autoimmune disease I can say that this book https://books.google.it/books/about/An_Epidemic_of_Absence.h... Really helped me understand the complexity of what we are talking about. By the way he mention epstein Barr too, it seems that When you are infected is very important.

The prevalence of autoimmune diseases went up during a particular period of time while hygiene increased while other factors went missing that seems important for the regulation of our immune system.

Mildlypolite··on The hottest eight years on record were the last eight years
That's not true, they are talking about different scenarios. They are not saying we are going extinct for sure.

Of course if you consider a scenario of +6° we are talking about billions of deaths.

The problem here is the food crisis which will come and its consequences.

And, by the way, the scientist is an ipcc reviewer which is the principal authority about climate change and part of ONU.

Mildlypolite··on The hottest eight years on record were the last eight years
Can you please inform yourself?

The science is pretty solid and we are not talking about a few million deaths (a few if you aren't included, of course).

Mildlypolite··on It’s cheaper to stop emitting now than to pull carbon from the air later
Nope you won't, disruption is coming earlier unfortunately. https://youtu.be/1BDmIis9STE
Mildlypolite··on It’s cheaper to stop emitting now than to pull carbon from the air later
Do you, at least, know why the Paris agreement set the limit at 1.5 degrees?

Because over 1.5° we will hit points of non return and feedback loops like the permafrost one. There is no coming back after that, we are talking about a food crisis. We are talking about parts of the earth which won't be possible to cultivate.

https://youtu.be/1BDmIis9STE

Reading the comments here is like being on the "don't look up" set, and it's not funny.

Google feedback loops permafrost,please.

Mildlypolite··on Telegram Blocks Russian Opposition Bot as Google, Apple Pull App
I didn't expect this from telegram. This is a huge disappointment.

Putin was very nervous about Navalny smart system because it was working. He put pressure on everybody, Google apple and telegram.

Their reputation is tainted forever.

Mildlypolite··on Fossil fuels must remain in the ground to keep warming below 1.5°C, study says
Are we still talking about this? Perhaps it's time to hear what IPCC Experts say :https://youtu.be/1BDmIis9STE
