I am the Technical Co-Founder of a Stealth-Mode Software Startup.

We expect to retain a few consultants towards the end of the year, if things go well we will hire some W-2 employees in Spring of 2016.

If you'd like to work for us, whether as a consultant or employee, please mail your dead-tree cover letter and resume to:

   Michael David Crawford
   650 NW Irving St
   Portland OR 97209-1272
   USA
We're mostly cool with remote work; that is, some of our projects must be done on site but most don't need that.

Consultants may send brochures or other marketing lit rather than their resumes. If you are a consultant, really a trifold brochure is far, far better than a resume and cover letter.

While I cannot guarantee response of any sort, to the very best of my ability I _will_ reply. If I don't think we could possibly extend you an offer, I may be able to suggest someone else who could.

I won't ask you to do any coding outside your interview. I myself regard coding challenges as unpaid labor. My decision to pursue this startup had a lot to do with my decision to boycott coding challenges.

Wish us luck: most new business fail within the first five years.

Yes but he is more concerned with ransacking its employee pensions.
MichaelCrawford··on Technology Is Magic, Just Ask the Washington Post
More than once, my employer issued a press release for a product I wrote then a reporter published it verbatim with their own byline.

There is a market opportunity for someone who can find two journalists doing thatnat the same time with the same press release.

MichaelCrawford··on Ask HN: How often does technical debt lead to the failure of a startup?
It is more important to sell software than it is to write it.

MichaelCrawford··on Sandra Bland and the ‘lawful order’ problem
Black and white thinking is unproductive.

There are good cops and bad cops. I have many good reasons to hate and fear the police - but I dont, because I judge them as individuals rather than as a group.

If a law enforcement officer commits a crime they should go to prison.

But most law enforcement officers are good people who want to do right by others.

MichaelCrawford··on Sandra Bland and the ‘lawful order’ problem
I know a veteran of the US Navy who was ordered by his captain to throw quarter million dollar flight computers overboard. Had he not done so his aircraft carrier would not have used up its budget.
MichaelCrawford··on HP bans T-shirts at work
I understand that when IBM visited Digital Research the head guy was out flying his airplane. This left them with no operating system for the IBM-PC, so Bill Gates licensed QDOS from a friend then licensed "Quick and Dirty Operating System" to IBM as MS-DOS.

Eventually Microsoft exceedd its QDOS license so its dveloper sued, settling for $50 million.

MichaelCrawford··on HP bans t-shirts at work
When I worked at Apple we spent more time designing our t-shirts than writing code.

Many companies retain "efficiency experts" for the stated purpose of improving productivity. One such observed that some factory workers did not have all the tools they needed and so were always fetching them from a cabinet. So his suggestion was to supply every worker with all the tools the required, in toolboxes placed readily at hand.

By contrast, Plantronics' efficiency expert convinced the management to forbid its workers from listening to music.

I expect at least some such experts are employed by The Man to keep the workers from seizing the means ofnproduction.

MichaelCrawford··on Google Alerts Will Change Your Life
Not mine.

I often keep my iPhone powered off so I wont be bothered.

A couple days ago I read that the iWatch is selling poorly because it is only really useful for notifications. There are some occupations where one needs that but there are many other well-established ways to receive notifications.

MichaelCrawford··on Additional C/C++ Tooling
I design my programs by writing the header files first.
MichaelCrawford··on Additional C/C++ Tooling
The term "C/C++" is a Tool of the Devil. Each has its many endearing qualities but it is inappropriate to put them together like that.

I often see job board posts and get mail from recruiters seeking coders with experience in "C/C++". Consider that Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman would be unqualified for C++ work. I myself have done so much C++ that I am not particularly good at C anymore.

If you use C++ as "A Better C" or "C With Objects" you will never get the bugs out of your code. C++ wants to be written a certain way which is quite alien to most C practices.

That automobiles are recalled for reasons other than hardware replacement is a recent phenomenon.

However a software patch would keep Def Con busy while replacement hardware is developed.

Links to Tens of Thousands of Legal Music Downloads

http://www.warplife.com/tips/law/copyright/music/legal-downl...

"Enjoy Free Music without getting in trouble by downloading the legal MP3s that many musicians provide as a way to promote themselves."

I wrote this in response to the RIAA's effort to convince the public that all music downloads are legal. You can download anything you want provided you have permission of the copyrigh holder, it is in the public domain or local laws permit it.

The RIAA responded by publishing their own legal music downloads list. They were all sites that carried tracks from the major labels. As that page was effectively giving my own free advertising they took it down after a few months.

I need to verify and update the links, I have that written down on my ToDo list. Maybe Tomorrow.

Musicians: List Your Band's Website http://www.warplife.com/tips/law/copyright/music/legal-downl...

I estimate that my copy and Kuro5hin's together have had ten million pageviews.

Note: "Legal" doesn't imply "Free" though most are free.

MichaelCrawford··on Amazon Is Now Worth More Than Wal-Mart
My father once complained about the hot weather making his work at the naval shipyard unbearable.

But dont you have air conditioning my mother asked.

The federal regulations specify the temperature in which AC is permitted he replied. Washington DC is the coolest place that permits air conditioning.

MichaelCrawford··on Too early to tell if Affordable Care Act(aka ObamaCare) is good for consumers
Without Obamacare I would have no coverage other than the legal requirement that emergency rooms treat me. Thats not an efficient allocation of money, that is its a lot cheaper for everyone if I can use my insurance.

Its not that I have a problem with the monthly payments but that I have so many preexisting conditions.

The insurance companies would get really petty when they denied me coverage, for example because I had an ear infection when I was two years old that damaged my hearing. That way they didn't have to come right out and say I was rated because I am mentally ill.

While I can get coverage at most coding jobs some of the best jobs I have had did not provide medical. Also I am commonly self employed. Given that most new jobs are created by small businesses its likely that job growth is putting money into the economy more than obamacare is taking money out of it.

MichaelCrawford··on Amazon Is Now Worth More Than Wal-Mart
That's the case with Microsoft and Apple too, I expect many companies.

When I was a contract programmer at Apple In 1990 I was told that it hired so many contractors so it could inflate the ratio of revenue to employees, which would inflate the stock price. While Apple still had to report our pay it was some other kind of business expense, like office furniture.

MichaelCrawford··on Ask HN: Be honest; Why do you want to achieve something?
So I can make my Mama proud.

She and Dad were heavily into that I did some of the work on the Mac I gave them for Christmas back in the day.

MichaelCrawford··on Codeless Mobile Analytics
I regard mobile and web analytics as unethical when they are used to correlate my activities between two different apps or websites, however I am cool with webmasters analyzing their own server logs, as well as for mobile developers to track my use of their app during beta testing but not during production.

Other than those I use technical measures to defeat them and work tirelessly to enable others to do so as well.

MichaelCrawford··on COULD GOOGLE STEAL Your IDEAS?
Digidesign and Atimi Software tried to steal mine.

Dont sign a contract you dont understand.

Atimi in the endnwas cool withma simple nondisclosure. Digidesign got their panties in a bunch when they clued into that I crossed out their clause with the intellectual property assignment, initialed then wrote an explanation just below my signature.

Unfortunately their HR manager didnt understand contract law. Sucks to be him.

Android and iOS have /etc/hosts, which you can edit if you jailbreak. I dont know about Windows phone, they run something from Nokia.

Some but not all Android devices permit you to install firmware you build yourself. Drivers for undocumented chips can be a problem

You can block IPs at your firewall. I havent actually tried it but I understand you can install a VPS client so you could use a firewall even when you're at a wifi spot.

MichaelCrawford··on LinkedIn quietly removes option to export contacts
I only use LinkedIn to find former coworkers and classmates. After that I email them directly.

However I get lots of connection requests from recruiters. I always accept them. I figure that greatly dilutes whatever value linkedin might have once had because most of my connections are recruiters who wadte their time on me because I dont log in a whole lot.

I got a C because I cratered the final.

MichaelCrawford··on How to hide yourself away from Google Analytics radars?
"Those who block all cookies, will not be tracked by Google Analytics, because all data is transmitted to the Google Analytics server via the basic (first party) cookie.

Those who delete cookies, will still be tracked, but they will be defined as new visitors every single time, because the web analytics system will not be able to associate them with their previous site visits."

While deleting or disabling cookies is helpful one needs to block web bugs as well.

The analytics services - there are many in addition to google - dont need cookies to associate your previous site visits because your IP, user agent, capabilities such as installed plugins, language and other stuff in the headers if your http GET or POST requests are enough to identify you.

MichaelCrawford··on Ask HN: Just launched. Zero users. No clue how to market. Resource suggestions?
While I mostly agree it is hard to determine what to write about until you have written something and it has been posted long enough that it yields some search engine referrals.

To take a wild guess is better than not posting anything at all.

MichaelCrawford··on Our Responsibility as Analytics Providers: Building Trust in Your Product

  127.0.0.1 www.hosted-pixel.com
You can edit /etc/hosts on your mobile device if you jailbreak it; on iOS there is iFile from Cydia or you can maintain it in your box then load it with scp. Some models of Android devices permit you to load firmware yourself.

You can block web and mobile bug servers at your firewall.

You could in principle hack a DNS server to return 127.0.0.1 for analytics servers but I dont know of a nameserver that actually does so.

I am completely cool with you analyzing your own web server logs. What I am not down with is you correlating my activities at two or more different sites.

I dont install any mobile apps that I dont absolutely require - not even the free ones - because many of them use mobile analytics. The sdks are free as in beer but the services use entire data centers. Data centers are very costly; someone must be paying for all that.

I know of an analytics service that is used for credit risk evaluation. I dont recall its URL but I will dig it up again.
