MetroWind··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
So... can we expect they all have AC in 2027?
MetroWind··on Prevent cognitive debt by manually retyping LLM-generated code
> Personal projects must be fun above all else. The joy of working on personal projects comes from the process, not from the outcome.

I think that's my fundamental difference with the author. I only write programs I actually need. I enjoy the outcome more than the process.

MetroWind··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
"I can refuse."

Only in theory. Yes you have "rights", but they have power.

MetroWind··on EU Age Verification Project Mandates Hardware-Bound Attestation
What a shit show lmao.

Problem: corporations pushing harmful ads and arranging social media timeline in harmful ways to kids

Solution: restricting the individuals. Giving corporations more control. Giving people less choice.

Yeah makes sense.

MetroWind··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
I have said this in multiple occasions both on and off line. The world is converging to China in terms of how and how much the governments want to be totalitarian. China already has decades of experience on this, and is both strong and subtle in doing this; almost elegant. US and Europe just got started. It's just too good to resist. (For the government, that is.)

They can just ask you to unlock it for them.
MetroWind··on The Dark Night of Mathematics
I don't know... I read it as another mathematician thinking they are so mighty and different from any other workers out there whose job was slightly touched (not even begin to be "replaced") by automation.

Maybe he should just touch grass.

MetroWind··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
Because most engineers nowadays have the fundamentally wrong idea about how their software should utilize the user's hardware: they treat user's CPU and RAM as their playground and being infinite, and therefore act as a platform to make their life easier instead of their user's.

Yes, coding is solved, for the developers, not for the users.

MetroWind··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
lmao US needs China's input on how to build the GFW.
MetroWind··on I regret migrating to Codeberg
I don't understand why people still bother with these kind of choices anymore. Why not just write your own service and self-host? I just vibed a git hosting thing and it has been running fine for some months.
MetroWind··on Tell HN: Namecheap gave my account to an unverified third party
I mean "cheap" is in the name...
MetroWind··on 98.css
I have my own version of this. The 98 style is still my favorite.
MetroWind··on Annoying and alarming things about OpenCode
OpenCode hijacks the terminal to the point where I can't even paste into it on my Linux with Hyprland. It's just trash.
MetroWind··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
The real scary part is China's compute capacity is orders of magnitude smaller than US's.
MetroWind··on China’s open-weights AI strategy is winning
Nope, that's not true at all in China. Everybody in China is using AI, even the elderlies and the kids. DeepSeek is already earning money.
MetroWind··on Kaiser nurses say AI, surveillance are making their jobs and patient care worse
My wife has been visiting an eye doctor several times. The doctor always use ChatGPT to double check (I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt; another way to frame this is the doctor didn't know shit and just used AI for answers).

I'm sure he doesn't think AI is making his job worse.

MetroWind··on Jerry's Map
"Jerry began drawing a map of an imaginary city"

"an elaborate set of rules and randomly generated instructions"

... so which one is it?

MetroWind··on F3
Lmao I read the readme and still don't know what it does.
MetroWind··on Countries are competing to see which can carry out mass surveillance the best
For many years I've been saying to people that the world will all copy China because it's just too good to resist. Reactions from people were usually along the lines of "we have laws", "believe the system", "we are a democracy", etc. lmao
MetroWind··on LastPass notifies users of yet another data breach
I'll never understand why someone would store their password on someone else's computer...
MetroWind··on DaVinci Resolve – Photo
FIIIIIInally someone understands.
MetroWind··on Microsoft terminates VeraCrypt account, halting Windows updates
Apple has trained people to believe their software needs to be signed by someone they don't know or trust.
MetroWind··on 81yo Dodgers fan can no longer get tickets because he doesn't have a smartphone
I don't know. My grandpa is 96. He uses a smart phone just fine. He even uses LLMs through the web chat UI. He also uses Photoshop to edit photos. My grandma when she was alive was also using a smart phone.
MetroWind··on Artemis computer running two instances of MS outlook; they can't figure out why
Lmao why is it running Windows at all...
MetroWind··on Personal Encyclopedias
"Trust me bro"
MetroWind··on Project Nomad – Knowledge That Never Goes Offline
Nah I'm not installing another JavaScript slop.
MetroWind··on So where are all the AI apps?
The idea is you write your own apps now, instead of waiting for others to write one for you.
MetroWind··on Kagi Small Web
I don't know... It doesn't look very "small" to me. I "next post"ed a few, and most of them ended up being just some typical tech bro blog talking about boring tech.

But I did eventually stumble upon a post about two corgis, and another about medieval Europe...thingy. So it's not all bad.

MetroWind··on Judge orders government to begin refunding more than $130B in tariffs
Oh cool. US people paid for the tariffs. Now they are going to pay for the refund
MetroWind··on Tech companies shouldn't be bullied into doing surveillance
OR... maybe they want to do it.
