Melatonic··on Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech
They've also been out for awhile. And scale super well to tiny sizes
Melatonic··on Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech
Vendor lock in sucks - I was talking about the research side.

And yeah integration with Google Workspace is still surprisingly not as good as you would expect.

Melatonic··on Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech
Probably $$$ and limit to internal compute. Rumour is they even internal google employees have trouble getting compute for AI stuff. Guessing they're pretty slammed infrastructure wise with adding AI answers to default Google searches
Melatonic··on Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech
Honestly I think their approach is the long term most useful one. Being SOTA is probably very costly and difficult. Optimising all the smaller stuff that's real world useful for people seems like it would have better long term use.

On top of that I would imagine the research side of Google might disk over things from one modality being useful to another - something like an audio optimising or memory optimising for text to speech could maybe also be useful for translation or world models. Etc etc

Melatonic··on Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech
Seriously. It's very annoying. Add to that the corporate Google Workspace also getting models later
Melatonic··on UK military jamming other nations' satellites to defend itself, BBC told
Pretty sure there's no way current satellites can even get close to the bandwidth of satellite links.

Also isn't GPS always wireless ?

Melatonic··on Fixing the Portobello Police Station Clock
You could almost say like it was TIME something like this hit number 1 !

Heathrow I'm guessing ?
Melatonic··on OpenAI is enlisting an influencer army to make it look 'good for the world'
AI doomerism more importantly I think legitimises current AI as being super powerful and useful. If something can take over the world then surely it's a powerful technology !

What we instead really have is Simple Skynet

Melatonic··on OpenAI is enlisting an influencer army to make it look 'good for the world'
You don't want AI in that PDF you're trying to sign?! I cannot imagine
Melatonic··on ReBarUEFI: Resizable BAR for almost any UEFI system
Should I be enabling this on a workstation setup doing ML ? Mostly GPU protein folding
Melatonic··on ReBarUEFI: Resizable BAR for almost any UEFI system
Does this help for more than just gaming ?

Melatonic··on Turn off and restrict access to Apple Intelligence features on Mac
If you want to do this on iOS I got it to completely delete Apple Intelligence data listed in the iOS settings. My iOS install is now 15.57gb.

Instructions:

1. Change Siri to a different language than your phone (can be Australian or UK English or Canada if you have set to US English or similar)

2. Setup Screen Time content restrictions. Restrict Siri to "Classic Siri" only. In the same page you can disable additional AI features (like the ChatGPT extension)

3. Turn phone on and off.

4. Disable Siri in its own settings if wanted or keep Classic Simpleton Siri that can still set alarms

5. Sometimes you have to wait an hour for it to delete the actual files.

6. (Optional) plug in via USB-C cable to a computer and "sync settings" to get it to try to clear some kind of iOS cache (Mac or Windows - on windows you need the Apple System Manager or whatever it's called that's in the Windows Store)

Melatonic··on Turn off and restrict access to Apple Intelligence features on Mac
First thing I did was turn on reduce transparency - even on iOS 18. And Reduce Motion. I also disable high frame rate and keep it at the lower option of (I believe) 60hz.

Used to do the same on Android plus more (you can disable most animations in developer)

Also highly recommend going in Accessibility on iOS and changing the screen swipe or slide effect or whatever. Results in much faster transitions. And all of this has always seemed to keep the phone cooler and battery life working longer.

If you want to get deeper disable all widgets completely (delete everything off the far left Home Screen). Disable weather auto updating based on location (if you deny it access to location then the Apple Weather app can just be set manually to track specific zip codes or cities).

I also do not get the insane folder thing everyone has on their Home Screen - I delete them all immediately along with all icons and keep one completely blank homescreen (with a cool background) and 4 things on the dock. Then only one other Home Screen with just a few additional icons in the corner. If you need any other app just search or go to the screen far right App Library !

Melatonic··on Disney+: New user agreement allows ads before movies in all subscriptions
I love libraries but DVD are pretty ancient in terms of video quality
Melatonic··on Disney+: New user agreement allows ads before movies in all subscriptions
Didn't they originally say there would be no ads on Disney+ ?

Now they're one of the worst. Hard to watch anything on there.

When the alternatives are free and a better product (no ads and easier to use) it seems odd to expect people to pay for something less convenient.

Melatonic··on AX – Google’s Open Agentic Orchestrator
I thought the whole point of a microVM is that it does provide isolation ?
Melatonic··on AX – Google’s Open Agentic Orchestrator
Personally I think microVM are the future but nothing wrong with a solid proxmox setup.

Probably we'll converge on a virtualised IO / Storage layer running microVMs beneath for isolation and security. Keep the network and storage layer separate for compatibility running a variety of stuff and a second security boundary.

Melatonic··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
DRAM isn't nearly as hard to get into as compute. The price fixing stuff is going to bite them in the ass someday soon by massively increasing the incentives for new players to enter the market and compete.
Melatonic··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
China is about to massively compete. And doesn't Micron and someone else have new fabs in NY coming online ? I can't imagine they're going to exclusively make HBM.

Ram always goes through these boom and bust cycles. They're going to increase supply but not so much that they're eventually left with huge overproduction as usual.

Of course if Google researchers come up with more ram reduction tricks for newer AI architectures that could make a huge difference as well

Melatonic··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
I bet it could fit. It just do a combo of soldered ram and non soldered like many laptops used to.
Melatonic··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
Is GDDR7 that's ECC then just the super well binned stuff (plus the ECC parts added) ? I've been wondering why we don't see more cards using it as they perform pretty damn well. Take the Nvidia 6000 Pro Blackwell for example. The compute is insanely fast assuming you can fit what you need in 96GB of ECC GDDR7
Melatonic··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
Don't some AMD full server CPUs have 12 memory channels ?
Melatonic··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
Kind of seems like we should be making chips with both. Big HBM stack on top as a sort of huge L5 cache like thing. And then a bunch of DRAM type sockets (like LPCAMM) around the exterior.
Melatonic··on Apple iPhone 18 Pro Camera test
It's definitely worth messing with. The reason it has a F and R side (with aperture markings) is that a lens will be optimised to either provide ideal bokeh at close or long focus (long focus bokeh being things blurred in the foreground closer to the camera). Try setting it for example to F 2.8 real aperture and then I believe move the DC ring to R 2.8 or 4 and you should get a very pleasant creamy blur. Or for a slightly sharper portrait move to neutral or R 2.0

Doesn't encrypted DNS make a lot of that metadata moot ?

And of course the additional options available
