MattSayar··on Track Errors First
I like the acronym MELT for Metrics, Errors, Logs, and Traces.
MattSayar··on Superman Can't Use Facebook
This was with an Android, but how else does it guesstimate your location? I assumed via IP
MattSayar··on Show HN: I build one absurd web project every month
Love it. Bringing back the "fun" part of the web
MattSayar··on How to post when no one is reading
I feel MOST blogs still use RSS/Atom. Back in the day, Feedly had a migration from Google Reader which involved just logging in via your Google Account. All your feeds were there. It's been rock solid for me ever since.

Now they've expanded into threat intelligence and I'll get popups asking me if I'm interested in the latest CVE or whatever, but I just dismiss those and read my blogs and comics. Not shilling, in fact I work for a competitor, but I use it every day!

MattSayar··on Figma Slides Is a Beautiful Disaster

MattSayar··on The 'white-collar bloodbath' is all part of the AI hype machine
It is absolutely essential that we still have experts who know the details. LLMs are just the tide that lifts all ships.
MattSayar··on How often does my home's IP address change?
I understand not selling static IPs; there's only ~4 billion of them and >4B devices that need to connect to the internet. CGNAT is the best way ISPs have figured out to ration IPs lately. The IPv6 rollout is something I'd have to read a book about to understand why it's taking 30 years with little adoption.
MattSayar··on The ‘white-collar bloodbath’ is all part of the AI hype machine
Can you talk about assembly without the internet?

I fully understand your point and even agree with it to an extent. LLMs are just another layer of abstraction, like C is an abstraction for asm is an abstraction for binary is an abstraction for transistors... we all stand on the shoulders of giants. We write code to accomplish a task, not the other way around.

MattSayar··on How often does my home's IP address change?
So yours updated about every 8-9 days compared to my (way shorter timeline experimental average of) ~40 days. I'm guessing ISPs officially want to err on the side of expecting your IP to change more often than not. Probably for CYA reasons
MattSayar··on SendGrid axes free plan
Just got this notification as well. It was in my spam, strangely enough.

Any good alternatives? I worry that other competitors will follow suit.

MattSayar··on Claude 4
It literally almost did!
MattSayar··on Claude 4
Same. And I JUST tried their GitHub Action agentic thing yesterday (wrote about it here[0]), and it honestly didn't perform very well. I should try it again with Claude 4 and see if there are any differences. Should be an easy test

MattSayar··on Claude Code SDK
How did you find this? It doesn't pop up on any news sections on their site. I want to be on top of these kinds of things too!
MattSayar··on Have I Been Pwned 2.0
Makes me feel a little powerless. The only thing I can really do is freeze my credit
MattSayar··on The world could run on older hardware if software optimization was a priority
Efficiency is critical to my everyday life. For example, before I get up from my desk to grab a snack from the kitchen, I'll bring any trash/dishes with me to double the trip's benefits. I do this kind of thing often.

Optimizing software has a similar appeal. But when the problem is "spend hours of expensive engineering time optimizing the thing" vs "throw some more cheap RAM at it," the cheaper option will prevail. Sometimes, the problem is big enough that it's worth the optimization.

The market will decide which option is worth pursuing. If we get to a point where we've reached diminishing returns on throwing hardware at a problem, we'll optimize the software. Moore's Law may be slowing down, but evidently we haven't reached that point yet.

MattSayar··on E-bikes make your city smaller
Fair enough. I don't want to come off as A Problem so I'll try to post non-me stuff more.

I'm trying to follow "POSSE" principles[0] but I keep hitting this "no self-promotion" wall. Not just here, but on reddit and other sites. I'm not trying to promote anything, I just want to own my content and share it. I don't have ads on my site. I'm not a shill. I just want to write about bikes.

I get mixed messaging between the hacker spirit of doing and sharing things, but be careful how much you talk about it. It's a little dispiriting and makes me less excited about sharing my work.

OK rant over. Fun note: I just noticed you're so close to having a beautiful round number of upvotes here (65535)

Well shoot, thanks for the heads up. What made you aware of this?
MattSayar··on Heat stress mitigation by trees and shelters at bus stops
Reminds me of a Technology Connections video describing how helpful awnings are in reducing temperatures inside your house [0]. Are there any modern-looking awnings that wouldn't look out of place in my neighborhood?

MattSayar··on How Obama’s BlackBerry got secured (2013)
Well, they're not even using Signal, but a wrapper that's less secure.

MattSayar··on How a 20 year old bug in GTA San Andreas surfaced in Windows 11 24H2
Small thing but I love the effort he puts into actually coding up his examples instead of screenshots. For example: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20250414-00/?p=11...

He has many better ones but that's the latest one I've seen

MattSayar··on AI as Normal Technology
I don't believe LLMs will directly lead to AGI. I'm also annoyed by the folks who hype it with the same passion as crypto bros.

As new "thinking" techniques and agentic behavior takes off, I think LLMs will continue to incrementally improve and the real trick is finding ways to make them work with the known limitations they have. And they can do quite a bit

MattSayar··on I'm tired of dismissive anti-AI bias
I think optimism is an underrated quality. Cynicism is easy, hope is hard
MattSayar··on I'm tired of dismissive anti-AI bias
Glad you liked it. Regarding power consumption I'm confident those issues will be solved once the incentives to do so are in place. Right now it's a gold rush, but eventually our attention will turn to lowering the cost of using these models. That's already started happening as evidenced by DeepSeek's extremely low cost of inference.
MattSayar··on Show HN: I built a word game. My mom thinks it's great. What do you think?
I have a Wordle-type clone I'm toying with and getting it to wrangle the correct letters is a harder problem than it seems. Hopefully you're able to streamline your design process so it's as painless as possible!
MattSayar··on The blissful Zen of a good side project
I love this, and yes can completely relate. The last side project I got absorbed into[0] completely consumed me for a weekend. I was driven like a man possessed to finish it before Monday. I had to leave the house and stake out a corner in a coffee shop to concentrate. The scope of the project was perfect: it was small enough to do in a weekend, I was building something I needed, and something that could help others. Creating something is so much fun, especially when you have a long-lasting way to share it like your own website.

I know people disparage LLMs for not building any serious code. Yes it's only a hobby project and not a production system, but my little project really would never have left the ground without it.

MattSayar··on Show HN: I built a word game. My mom thinks it's great. What do you think?
Fun! I look forward to seeing what future categories and words are. Do you have to manually curate them each day? How big is your backlog? Is there a way to automate it?
