Fastspring already does this, and thank god they do, I really don't want to deal with the vat moss bullshit
MattBearman··on Ask HN: Real odds of making a living off a web app
I do think it's a good option, as I only need another 6 subscribers to the top end plan to reach profitability. In fact I've recently been trying a cold email outreach campaign, so far I've only sent about 90 emails, 50% open rate, 12% clicked through, but no sign ups. There will be more about that in part 3

MattBearman··on Ask HN: Real odds of making a living off a web app
I hope it's not a fools errand, as I'm currently attempting to do just this. I have a SaaS product that currently profits about £400/ month, and I have about £20k saved. I'm aiming to be living from my web app in 9 months.

If you're interested I'm doing a completely transparent blog series about my progress - https://blog.bugmuncher.com/2015/10/22/from-side-project-to-... and https://blog.bugmuncher.com/2015/10/22/from-side-project-to-...

MattBearman··on Show HN: Vertexshaderart.com
Wow, this didn't just crash the Tab, it didn't just kill my Browser. This completely crashed OS X to the point that command + option + escape didn't even work, and I had to do a hard restart.

I really wanna see, but I'm scared to try again...

MattBearman··on Tell HN: Making a living from my side project – Part 1 – I'm Scared
Thanks for the feedback. You are correct, I have been discovering through my content marketing efforts that literally none of my signups come from initially landing on a blog post. Yet that strange part is since I've been content marketing, signups have noticeably increased in proportion to page views.

$3000 MRR is my goal for ASAP :) I've said 9 months as it seems reasonable, but more because this is virgin territory for me, I have no idea what kind of MoM growth is possible for BugMuncher, I'll be re-evaluating as time goes on.

MattBearman··on Tell HN: Making a living from my side project – Part 1 – I'm Scared
Thanks! Synkee looks cool, it's something I could have done with when I was still freelancing, as some clients were stuck with FTP only servers!
MattBearman··on Tell HN: Making a living from my side project – Part 1 – I'm Scared
Yeah, I wasn't sure about posting this way, and wouldn't normally, but as this is really a follow up to my previous Tell HN it seemed appropriate.

I would have posted the whole content on HN, but it wouldn't really work with in the confines of Hacker News formatting. Mods please delete / turn into a link if it's not ok.

Damn it! I can totally see it! I used to think this car was pretty awesome looking, now I'm just gonna see Porsche-birth :\
MattBearman··on Ask HN: Examples of sucessful one person startups?
When you say one person, do you mean didn't have a co-founder/team when they started? Or still only one person to this day? If the former, then Balsamiq was started by one guy.
MattBearman··on Twitter announces layoffs

"Emails like this are usually riddled with corporate speak so I'm going to
  give it to you straight."
Three paragraphs later...

"So we have made an extremely tough decision: we plan to part ways with
up to 336 people from across the company."
Edit: My bad, I should have been clearer in what I meant. There isn't really any corporate speak, but I wouldn't call 3 paragraphs of fluff 'giving it to you straight'
MattBearman··on Firefox 41 can screenshot a single DOM element
Are there any plans to make this available through a Javascript API? With appropriate security warnings of course.
MattBearman··on Firefox 41 can screenshot a single DOM element
You are correct sir, but until this new firefox screenshot function is available as a JavaScript API in all browsers, it's the closest anyone can get. And there will always be stragglers with older browsers to account for.

It's also worth mentioning that because BugMuncher uses a big farm of Selenium servers, it's pretty rare that it can't take the screenshot in the exact same Browser / OS as the user. And in those scenarios, BugMuncher uses a scoring algorithm to find the closest match available.

MattBearman··on Firefox 41 can screenshot a single DOM element
Shameless plug: If you're interested in this functionality, but want it in all browsers without needing any plugins, check out my start up BugMuncher - https://www.bugmuncher.com
MattBearman··on Study: Some car models consuming around 50% more fuel than official results
My thoughts exactly. And I don't think it's just lead footed drivers, the lag on some of these small turbo charged engines is so great that most drivers will feel they have to stamp their foot to the floor just to make the car move.
MattBearman··on I'm in my 40s, trying to apply for YC next year

MattBearman··on Ask HN: What is your best side project / passive income in 2015?
Just this month I've decided to try and take BugMuncher (https://www.bugmuncher.com) from side project to full time gig. I've given up my freelance work and been putting all my time (and then some) into marketing and development.

I'm probably going to start blog series about the process if people are interested?

MattBearman··on Things you should do before making a website live
That's because the article isn't about security, it's about common pitfalls and oversights when making site live.
MattBearman··on Ask HN: What's your 1-man startup?
I run BugMuncher (http://bugmuncher.com/) - a website feedback tool that allows users to submit screenshots direct from their browser, no plugins required.

I started BugMuncher as a side project about 4 years ago, but this month I quit freelancing and started on my quest to make it my full time job. Exciting times!

MattBearman··on Tell HN: Today I try to make a living from my side project
Thanks for the kind words. I've thought about blogging my progress, but I have an irrational fear that people will be less likely try BugMuncher if they know of my mission, as they may think BugMuncher will shut down if I'm unable to earn a living from it by the time my runway runs out. Which of course isn't the case I'd just pick up some more freelance work again.

Maybe I'll set up a personal blog to write about my progress.

MattBearman··on Tell HN: Today I try to make a living from my side project
I am indeed following these subreddits, although I've not yet tried submitting BugMuncher. I don't spend anywhere near as much time on Reddit as I do on Hacker News, do you have any tips for submitting BugMuncher?
MattBearman··on Tell HN: Today I try to make a living from my side project
Thanks for the feedback. Do you mind elaborating? I've been thinking that maybe $199 / month would be a better price point, but with more included.

What would you expect to receive at a $1000 / month price point?

MattBearman··on Tell HN: Today I try to make a living from my side project
Thanks, I'm currently working on some design tweaks in an effort to improve signups - currently around 2%
MattBearman··on Tell HN: Today I try to make a living from my side project
It's a genuine tweet I found, so decided to put it in there as a bit of a joke. Someone else once said to me they assumed the tweets were being automatically harvested and a bad one slipped in, so maybe I should take that one out?
MattBearman··on Tell HN: Today I try to make a living from my side project
Excellent idea! I hadn't thought of this approach, I'll definitely try to get some partnerships in this area.
MattBearman··on Tell HN: Today I try to make a living from my side project
Thanks! I don't mind at all, it's something I've always wanted to do, but always wanted to be bootstrapped, so I've had to save up enough runway money to make a good go at it.
