MattBearman··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
One theory is it's a tweet scheduling platform, rather than Twitter itself that was hacked.
MattBearman··on Functional Programming? Don’t Even Bother, It’s a Silly Toy
I'm thinking this could do with a [satire] tag :)
MattBearman··on Ask HN: What have the past 12 months taught you?
It's possible you're trolling, but it rubs me the wrong way that you're getting downvoted just because people don't agree with you.

For the most part I don't agree with you, but your comment is as valid as any other in the context of this thread (unless you are in fact a troll).

Edit: I accidentally a letter

MattBearman··on Climate Change is real and you can prevent it. Be the change
Interesting point, and one I hadn't considered. In our case, the house (rented) came with a dishwasher, so it makes sense to use it either way.
MattBearman··on Climate Change is real and you can prevent it. Be the change
This is a pretty good list, although my understating is that dishwashers are generally more energy efficient than washing up by hand - https://www.comparethemarket.com/energy/information/how-much...
MattBearman··on Svelte is the most beautiful web framework I've seen
I'm getting the same, which is a shame, as I'm genuinely intrigued by Svelte
MattBearman··on Google Will Eat Itself (2005)
IIRC most of mainland Europe formats numbers this way ('.' for thousand separator ',' for decimal separator)

Strangely there doesn't seem to be a 'falsehoods programmers believe about numbers' post, but if there were, this would definitely feature :)

MattBearman··on Show HN: This Meme Does Not Exist
First one I got was pretty good - https://imgflip.com/i/2zgtp8

After that it was all gibberish :/

MattBearman··on Ask HN: What is your money-making side project outside programming?
My wife and I have a YouTube channel on which we are fixing up an old Toyota MR2 [0], we’ve no desire to be full time “YouTubers”, but we enjoy making the videos and get about $70 / from patreon/ads

MattBearman··on Show HN: Phishing with fake browser error pages (PoC)
Fuck, that totally got me, I just thought the page was down. I can totally see someone who doesn't know that the Safari error page doesn't ask for an email address filling it in.
MattBearman··on UK Parliament petitions website down amid overwhelming brexit rejection
At this rate of growth it would take less than 2 days to surpass the 17.4 million who voted to leave (and yes I know it won't maintain this level of growth)
MattBearman··on UK Parliament petitions website down amid overwhelming brexit rejection
While that's true, it's already up to 800k, just 30 min after you made your comment
MattBearman··on I’m 14, and I quit social media after discovering what was posted about me
I totally agree, I deactivated my Facebook a few years back. We use WhatsApp to share pictures and information about our baby with close friends and family, just hope the end-to-end encryption is legit. One big concern for me was the idea of Facebook having a 'shadow profile' of our daughter without our consent.
MattBearman··on I’m 14, and I quit social media after discovering what was posted about me
Aw that sucks! We had a similar thing. Told everyone during the pregnancy that we didn't want it on facebook, and MIL still posted information on Facebook.

We deliberately didn't tell anyone when my wife went into labour, as she didn't want anyone else there.

MattBearman··on I’m 14, and I quit social media after discovering what was posted about me
We haven't decided that yet (she's only 3 months old at this point). We'll discuss that when/if she decides she wants to be on social media. Hopefully by then there will have been more studies into the effects of social media use with age, and we can make an informed decision :)
MattBearman··on I’m 14, and I quit social media after discovering what was posted about me
My wife and I recently had our first child, and we decided we didn't want her to have any kind of social media presence until she was old enough to make that decision for herself.

It's been a challenge ensuring friends and family don't post stuff about our daughter, but reading this reinforces that we're making the right choice.

MattBearman··on A Touchpad Embedded Keyboard
I think it would bother me having the click buttons separate from the 'touchpad', but a cool concept none the less.

Can anyone see how you switch between keyboard and touchpad mode? Or does it guess based on gestures? I tried to find it in the user manual, but it appears to only be in Korean.

MattBearman··on Apple’s Latest Macs Have a Serious Audio Glitching Bug
Depending on your Macbook's age and your location, you may be able to get the keyboard replaced due to sticking keys. I ended up getting a brand new MBP when they repeatedly fucked up repairing my sticking keyboard.

Obviously it would be better if the keyboards didn't break so easily to begin with, but at least you may not have to put up with it :)

MattBearman··on Quora User Data Compromised
That's exactly my point. I use 1password to handle my logins, but most people I speak to use the same password for everything, so knowing how likely it is that other services could be compromised due to this is vital.
MattBearman··on Quora User Data Compromised
I think at this point it should be standard practice to say what hashing algorithm is used in passwords when disclosing a breach.

The email I got from quota just says “encrypted” passwords, and while the blog post says “hashed”, it doesn’t say what algorithm. For all we know it could be something useless like MD5

MattBearman··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (November 2018)
SEEKING WORK | UK | Remote is ideal

I'm a full stack developer. For the last 3 years I've been working full-time on my one-man startup Saber (https://www.saberfeedback.com) however I'm now looking to get back into freelancing.

I mainly work in Ruby on Rails, EmberJS, Javascript, PHP, WordPress and CodeIgniter.

Drop me an email on matt@mattbearman.com to discuss your project.

MattBearman··on Micro.blog
Is that really a problem? XSS attacks usually involve letting site's visitors add arbitrary html/js. The account owner being able to is more of a feature.
MattBearman··on Facebook exodus: Nearly half of young users have deleted the app
This is exactly how my leaving facebook started. After a few months without the app I logged out on desktop, and then it wasn't long until I deactivated my account.

I'd like to delete it entirely but at the moment too many people still use messenger to contact me.

MattBearman··on Brexit is already damaging European science
I don't think it's fair to blame leave voters, the whole thing was fundamentally flawed. While it was obvious what remain meant, "leave" was never actually defined, and so open to interpretation.

Forgetting for a second the whole thing was just a ploy to win over UKIP voters, it is ridiculous that this far down the line leave still hasn't been defined. A small part of me thinks that maybe May is playing the 4D chess long-con, and deliberately being as incompetent as possible to drive us to a last-minute remain outcome. Ockham's Razor says otherwise though

MattBearman··on Ask HN: Did any Show HN posts turn into successful startups?
Thanks! I'm not aiming for explosive growth or a huge exit, so it's probably more of a 'life-style business' rather than a startup, but that suits me just fine :)
MattBearman··on Ask HN: Did any Show HN posts turn into successful startups?
I announced BugMuncher here (since been renamed to Saber Feedback - https://www.saberfeedback.com), not sure if it counts as a successful startup, but it's been profitably paying my wages for a couple of years :)
MattBearman··on Google to developers: We take down your extension because we can
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17448254

  I can already see the followup HN news: "Google attacking developers on Chrome Web Store and breaking free web!"
That's uncanny!
MattBearman··on Apple Engineers Its Own Downfall with the Macbook Pro Keyboard
I concur, although we seem to be in the minority. I love the feel of the new keyboard and can type faster on it than my old mbp keyboard.

Having said that, mine has developed the issue of sticking keys, for some reason it's the g key that repeats for me. I'm happy they've acknowledged this issue, I'll be getting mine fixed under warrantee.

MattBearman··on Anti-If: The missing patterns (2016)
Interesting article and definitely some good advice, but I completely disagree with example 4.

Surely I can't be the only person who finds

    if (foo) {
        if (bar) {
            return true;
        }
    }

    if (baz) {
        return true;
    } else {
        return false;
    }
Much easier to parse than

    return foo && bar || baz;
It's a bit better to my eye with parentheses:

    return (foo && bar) || baz;
Of course the first version is far from perfect (no need for the nested if, etc.) but I've always found too many comparisons on one line just looks messy.
MattBearman··on EU GDPR – Another reason for SaaS to reconsider on-premise
Although this is a risk, it has been somewhat accounted for in GDPR:

(from ico.org.uk - https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-the-general-da...)

"Can I charge a fee for dealing with a subject access request?

You must provide a copy of the information free of charge. However, you can charge a 'reasonable fee' when a request is manifestly unfounded or excessive, particularly if it is repetitive.

You may also charge a reasonable fee to comply with requests for further copies of the same information. This does not mean that you can charge for all subsequent access requests."
