MathYouF··on Native speakers are hard to understand in a lingua franca situation
Japanese feel compelled to defend their group because a lot of foreigners impose their cultural expectations on them, and misunderstand the intent behind why certain things are done the way they're done. And because they genuinely love their society/culture.

Never met a single far right Japanese nationalist living there over a year. But nearly all looked at the pros and cons of their society, and felt theirs were better than the list other countries had, for providing a life they wanted to live, and don't care about how those align with other countries interpretation of those things.

Your explanation is one I've often heard from people whose main Japanese friends are the "far left" who have spent significant time living outside of Japan by choice, hardly a group that could be said to represent the average Japanese person. Most Japanese also just find emotionally charged complaint to be disrespectful, even if it's not about Japan. There's a lot to learn about the nuances of their culture, a simple explanation is usually very incorrect, and might not even be a contributing factor.

Curious to hear where your explanation of vocal right wing neighbors comes from.

MathYouF··on MUM: A new AI milestone for understanding information
If there's anything SoTA AI researchers love and have experience doing it's writing blog posts and papers explaining how.

The lack of details makes me think they're either hiding a new technique they'd rather keep secret because it provides a competitive advantage, or that it's really only a marginal improvement over existing NLP models (or an ensemble of them with nearly no improvement on any given metric) and the 1000x improvement is on a metric that no actual ML scientist would respect.

I don't have the slightest bit of information about Google's AI team to know if those are the only two options and if so which is more likely.

MathYouF··on All Hail King Pokémon
Me and every friend I had in elementary school played with pokemon cards. We never once played the actual card game, just the gameboy game. The cards were closer to stuffed animals than utility items. If you played a card game it was YuGiOh because it was so simple.
MathYouF··on Developers Who Use Spaces Make More Money Than Those Who Use Tabs (2017)
Ended up making my VSCode show white spaces instead and setting the default clicking tab to make a single space, but I appreciate the advice to make it more visually explicit, it has definitely thrown me off before when the code i'm looking at is so deeply nested.

Do you have any other code editor visual customization tips you'd recommend for a better experience?

MathYouF··on FBI Has Gained Access to Sci-Hub Founder's Apple Account, Email Claims
It's interesting you view those as informational because I see them as narrative stories. Also you might think you don't need the time to ponder but you don't know what you've missed by not taking the time the show makers decided to put in there for pause. Also changing the speed changes their voice and therefore some subte things about the delivery. Pure information media is like Strangs Linear Algebra course or some similar MIT OCW mathy course. Would you also consider radiolab something informational that you might speed up?
MathYouF··on FBI Has Gained Access to Sci-Hub Founder's Apple Account, Email Claims
All of you people really listen to podcasts and youtube videos and lectures at more than 1x speed? What about just enjoying the emotional journey, the pregnant pauses, having time to consider possibilities and implications between narrative sections?

I only ever met one person who basically always sped up any media they consumed, but I wonder if it's more common and if so what you think about your habit. Seems useful only in rare occasions where it's an information based media and the person is exceptionally slow.

MathYouF··on Artist faked being a billionaire to photograph New York City’s best views
Why don't you rent out your car on Turo when you're not using it, or resell your items when you're done with them rather than throw them away? I suspect, for the car example at least, it's for similar reasons. The liability of damage and hassle of managing a tenant is greater than the potential upside of rent for them.
MathYouF··on EU proposing to regulate the use of Bayesian estimation
This would outlaw advertising that is effective then, since the entire goal of an advertisement is to maximize the difference between A and B. So to do any advertising you'd have to prove it wasn't very effective? Sounds similar to types of proposed gun regulation: "your guns can kill people, just not too many too fast too effectively"

Not that that means it's necessarily a bad approach, just never heard of marketing being limited by its effectiveness. Similar to having to put those gross pictures on cigarette packages now.

MathYouF··on Debating the impact of machine-created art
From the article:

"No matter how engaging the songs or poems that a computer generates may be, they ultimately feel empty. They lack the electricity of the human body, the hum of human consciousness, the connection with another person."

This hypothesis can be easily tested by seeing how well he can distinguish between human generated and AI generated art.

MathYouF··on Navigating Silicon Valley as a Female Founder
Well said. I just thought the person who is the root commenter of this chain characterising the article as "An attempt to get sympathy" was overly myopic. I also feel bias in parts of my life and if someone had written a guide about how to overcome them and a person with the opposite traits said the point of it was only to get sympathy, id be upset that they dismissed the true point of the article, which in this case was to empower them to overcome what biases do exist.
MathYouF··on Navigating Silicon Valley as a Female Founder
Fair point, the tweet wasn't quantitatively backed up. Interestingly the title above said "The standards for you are higher." and yet her paragraphs after that don't revisit that idea, but rather make the point that they ought to adopt a conversational style related to their background that compensates for what they say is a common flaw with women pitching (modesty about accomplishments). Which I think is a fair bit of advice to give anyone entering the valley, to have a pitch explaining why you're great to others.
MathYouF··on Navigating Silicon Valley as a Female Founder
Seemed like a normal and reasonable guide. Do you really posit that absolutely no men are sexist to them? I'm sure you'd agree there much be some. So then what ought they do about it to defend themselves and have a career they want? That's exactly what this guide is. Its target audience is clearly other women, that's the style it's written in. So why do you feel this is a ploy for sympathy? You should see if any specific criticisms you can supply from reading the article would hold up to analysis, I'm open minded enough to hear them if you want to give it a try.
