MarcusVorenus··on It's practically impossible for regular people to buy Bitcoin
It's not hard in Germany either if you use Bitstamp.
MarcusVorenus··on Bitcoin Surpasses PayPal in Transaction Volume?
80,000 are only transactions that are recorded in the blockchain, it doesn't take into account transactions that go through Bitpay, Coinbase, gambling sites, the Reddit bitcoin bot, etc.
MarcusVorenus··on The Mission of Tesla
What? How are you supposed to assess the safety of electric vs gasoline cars by comparing electric vs electric?
MarcusVorenus··on American Cities May Have Hit 'Peak Office'
>My understanding is that office space is a function of the number of white collar workers in the economy.

Telecommuting makes this rule obsolete.

MarcusVorenus··on Soylent on the latest Vice piece
I guess I should have said it would be trivial to make it tastier for my own non-demanding taste buds. I could just add a few drops of stevia and I'd be good to go, but I see how it could be a challenge to make something that pleases most people.

"Fatty" is not a synonym for unhealthy by the way. A lot of people consider high fat/low carb diets to be healthier than the reverse.

MarcusVorenus··on Soylent on the latest Vice piece
Such option was not presented in the hypothetical scenario. It'd be trivial anyway to make the tasteless goop tasty with some flavorings.
MarcusVorenus··on Soylent on the latest Vice piece
Actually I like food a lot, it's just that health is more important to me than taste. After all, the pleasure we get from tasty food only lasts a moment, while the pleasure we get from having a healthy body and mind lasts a lifetime.
MarcusVorenus··on Soylent on the latest Vice piece
Delicious unhealthy cheeseburger or a tasteless but healthy goop in a can? I guess you're right, it's a no-brainer either for people with self-discipline and for those without.
MarcusVorenus··on This basic income crowdfunding campaign reached its goal in less than 48 hours
How would you go about getting supporting evidence for something that hasn't been tried yet? At the very least we would save a ton of money on bureaucracy and corruption.
MarcusVorenus··on All around the world, labour is losing out to capital
But their needs are not already satisfied. Maybe their physiological and security needs, but what about their needs for belonging, esteem and self-actualization? The more likely scenario is they'll spend the remaining 90% trying to fulfill those needs through philanthropy.
MarcusVorenus··on Bitcoin, The Economic Singularity: From Holland with Love
Yeah, sovereign debt will become a thing of the past and that's a good thing. Not sure how this is related to socialism though, at least in the strict sense of the word. It's more about short term thinking than anything else.
MarcusVorenus··on Bitcoin, The Economic Singularity: From Holland with Love
The only thing that governments would need to do to stay in business is to tax things that can't be hidden, like land and real estate. I'm hoping they go with a single land value tax.
MarcusVorenus··on Soylent: Manufacturing Update
You only need to make the calculations once though. Preparation time is 5 minutes tops if you use pills instead of pure powder to achieve your micros.

You could make yourself a DIY Soylent customized for your needs. There's an app to make things easy for you:

MarcusVorenus··on The Workman Keyboard Layout
I don't get the point of agriculture. It's just so hard to learn!

What? We have to wait till next year for a new harvest?!

Guys, we should just stick to moving around and hunting prey.

MarcusVorenus··on The Workman Keyboard Layout
The advantages are speed and comfort. Yes, it's hard to learn and you'll be slower than with QWERTY for a while, but it pays off in the end. Consider it a long term investment in productivity.
MarcusVorenus··on The Workman Keyboard Layout
What I do is I have a second layout just for symbols which I toggle with Alt Gr using my right thumb. This way I can stay in the home row and accessing symbols is almost as fast as letters. You'll need a wide layout with 12 home row keys for this to be comfortable though (my right index rests at the l instead of j).

As a bonus I map Shift to the right Win key so that I can press it with my thumb as well. Using the thumb for Ctrl is also doable but it's a little annoying when you need to use the same hand for the combo.

MarcusVorenus··on Things You Can Do That Will Make You Happier
In my opinion the most important thing you can do for happiness is to have purpose. If you don't have a cause you are willing to dedicate your life to, something that you will give it your all to see realized, then you are not really living, you are just surviving, and when you reflect upon your life you'll feel emptiness.
MarcusVorenus··on Cyber-libertarianism: Silk Road battleground individualism vs authority
Moderation in the pursuit of a better world is no virtue. As a consequentialist, I disagree with your premise that subverting bad laws is unethical behavior.
MarcusVorenus··on Cyber-libertarianism: Silk Road battleground individualism vs authority
I'm not an individualist and I'm a strong supporter of the Silk Road. Drug prohibition is just dumb policy; it doesn't work, it's expensive, it makes drugs more desirable for teenagers and it ends up causing more suffering than if they were completely legal. I'm hoping these anonymous marketplaces go mainstream to force politicians to start thinking about better ways to reduce drug use, such as education and rehab.
MarcusVorenus··on Open Source made me the man I am
You'd be better off but not the better man. The better man endures the pain of doing the right thing.
MarcusVorenus··on First physical evidence of why you're an owl or a lark
There's research supporting my claim:

MarcusVorenus··on First physical evidence of why you're an owl or a lark
To expand: Sunlight makes the body stop producing melatonin and start producing serotonin, which improves your mood and alertness. Being deprived of sunlight for extended periods can result in seasonal affective disorder.
MarcusVorenus··on First physical evidence of why you're an owl or a lark
Consider sleeping with the curtains open, your circadian rhythm is sure to shift to a lark schedule then.
MarcusVorenus··on Ask HN: Have you made a profit mining Bitcoin?
Pretty bold move. Nice to hear it paid off.
