MangoCoffee··on Apple is fighting for TSMC capacity as Nvidia takes center stage
>If tech sector is so anti-competitive, the government should just seize it and nationalize it.

Trump is using his DOJ to probe Jerome Powell with a bogus lawsuit because the Fed won't lower rates on demand.

An independent Fed is the most important body for the USA. Lowering rates should be based on facts, not dictated by some bankrupt casino CEO. And now you want our government to nationalize the tech sector?

MangoCoffee··on Apple is fighting for TSMC capacity as Nvidia takes center stage
>Apple has used both Samsung and TSMC for its chips in the past. Until the A7 it was Samsung, A8 was TSMC, and the A9 was dual-sourced by both! Apple is used to switching between suppliers fairly often for a tech company; it's not that it's too hard for them to switch fab, it's that TSMC is the only competitive fab right now.

This is false. Samsung competes with Apple on smartphones. Apple even filed a lawsuit against Samsung over smartphones.

Apple moved to TSMC because how can you trust someone to make chips for you containing your phone's core IP?

>I could totally see Apple turning to Intel for the Mac chips

I could totally see Apple will be wary turning their core IPs to Intel

MangoCoffee··on AI is a business model stress test
>Open Source was never the commercial product. It's the conduit to something else.

this is correct. If you open source your software, then why are you mad when companies like AWS, OpenAI, etc. make tons of money?

Open Source software is always a bridge that leads to something else to commercialize on. If you want to sell software, then pick Microsoft's model and sell your software as closed source. If you get mad and cry about making money to sustain your open source project, then pick the right license for your business.

If your business can easily get destroyed by AI, then the problem is your business model.
MangoCoffee··on Creators of Tailwind laid off 75% of their engineering team
If your business can easily be replaced or lose revenue because of AI, it doesn't sound like a good business model to begin with

MangoCoffee··on Total monthly number of StackOverflow questions over time
Stack Overflow set out to be a better Q&A site but has turned into a user-unfriendly, gatekeeping platform where questions are often marked as duplicates because a similar question was answered 15 years ago. Everything and every question is banned, gatekeep, or marked as a duplicate.
MangoCoffee··on ManusAI Joins Meta
"I left Meta because I made a bet that models were going to commoditized and the value would be in products on top of models, but MetaMate and GenAI were highly politicized sucking up all oxygen in the room."

I found Erik's takes on this is interesting.

MangoCoffee··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
Many people have pointed out that if AI gets better at writing code and doesn't generate slop, then programmers' roles will evolve to Project Manager. People with tech backgrounds will still be needed until AI can completely take over without any human involvement.
MangoCoffee··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
>He's mainly talking about environmental & social consequences

That's such a weak argument. Then why not stop driving, stop watching TV, stop using the internet? Hell... let's go back and stop using the steam engine for that matter.

MangoCoffee··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
>This is a new tech where I don't see a big future role for US tech. They blocked chips, so China built their own. They blocked the machines (ASML) so China built their own.

Nvidia, ASML, and most tech companies want to sell their products to China. Politicians are the ones blocking it. Whether there's a future for US tech is another debate.

MangoCoffee··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
I'm not sure what your point is. The current two leading countries in the world on the AI/LLMs front are the US and China.
MangoCoffee··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
Technology improves every year; better chips that consume less electricity come out every year. Apple's M1 chip shows you don't need x86, which consumes more electricity and runs cooler for computing.

Tech capitalists also make improvements to technology every year

MangoCoffee··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
The cat's out of the bag. Even if US companies stop building data centers, China isn't going to stop and even if AI/LLMs are a bubble, do we just stop and let China/other countries take the lead?
MangoCoffee··on The Going Dark initiative or ProtectEU is a Chat Control 3.0 attempt
How long before the EU comes out with a social credit system like China?

How long before the EU has its own version of China's Great Firewall?

MangoCoffee··on Is it a bubble?
Google said the dotcom bubble is roughly from 1995 to 2001. That's about 6 years. ChatGPT was released in 2022. Claude AI was released in 2023. DeepSeek was released in 2023.

Let's just say the AI bubble started in 2023. We still have about 3 years, more or less, until the AI bubble pops.

I do believe we are in the build out phase of the AI bubble, much like the dotcom bubble, where Cisco routers, Sun Microsystems servers... etc. sold like hotcakes to build up the foundation of the dotcom bubble

MangoCoffee··on Japan's gamble to turn island of Hokkaido into global chip hub
> Meanwhile the US builds a ring of military bases in countries surrounding China and that's not supposed to be seen as bellicose in any way.

Shouldn't you take WWII history into the account?

1. South Korea - Korean war happened and majority of South Korean want US military base there 'cause you know North Korea with its nukes point at Seoul.

2. Japan - well, everyone know what happened and the treaty were signed thus military base in Japan.

MangoCoffee··on Japan's gamble to turn island of Hokkaido into global chip hub
This is so stupid. It doesn't mean anything. History is history. What exists now is that Taiwan is an independent country with its own currency and military, and Taiwanese pay no taxes to China.

If you want to use history as some kind of justification, why don't we go all the way back to when the human race originated in Africa?

MangoCoffee··on Japan's gamble to turn island of Hokkaido into global chip hub

MangoCoffee··on AMD continues to chip away at Intel's x86 market share
Isn't TSMC Arizona and Japan the hedge for such geopolitical changes?

Their best engineers are probably still going to be in Taiwan, but with the rate at which TSMC is building fabs overseas, it shouldn't matter much.

MangoCoffee··on US startup Substrate announces chipmaking tool that it says will rival ASML
https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20190709009300320

"Samsung is a major buyer of Japanese chemical companies producing fluorine polyimide used to make flexible OLED displays, as well as resist and etching gas needed in the semiconductor fabrication process."

Samsung's CEO went to Japan to try and secure Japan's chemicals back in 2019 during the bad blood between South Korea and Japan.

China will have to take on the entire supply chain from chemicals, machines and talents if they want to avoid a chokehold. That's a very tall order.

MangoCoffee··on Show HN: Why write code if the LLM can just do the thing? (web app experiment)
i get your point. i've mixed result with AI tool like Github copilot and Jetbrains Junie.
MangoCoffee··on Show HN: Why write code if the LLM can just do the thing? (web app experiment)
>You're maintaining code written by someone else through the use of these tools, where it could have been good enough for them.

I believe everyone has to deal with that, AI or not. There are bad human coders.

I've done integration for several years. There are integrations done with tools like Dell Boomi (no-code/low-code) that work but are hard to maintain, like you said. But what can you do? Your employer uses that tool to get it running until it can't anymore, as most no-code/low-code tools can get you to your goal most of the time. But when there's no "connector" or third-party connector that costs an arm and a leg, or hiring a Dell Boomi specialist to code that last mile, which will also cost an arm or a leg, then you turn to your own IT team to come up with a solution.

It's all part of IT life. When you're not the decision-maker, that's what you have to deal with. I'm not going to blame Dell Boomi for making my work extra hard or whatnot. It's just a tool they picked.

I am just saying that a tool is a tool. You can see many real life examples where you'll be pressured into using a tool and maintaining something created by such a tool, and not just in IT but in every field.

MangoCoffee··on Show HN: Why write code if the LLM can just do the thing? (web app experiment)
Here's why I don't get why people are badmouthing AI assist tools from Claude for Excel to Cursor to any new AI assist tool.

Why not try it out, and if it doesn't work for you or creates more work for you, then ditch it. All these AI assist tools are just tools.

MangoCoffee··on Tell HN: Azure outage
The Internet is supposed to be decentralized. The big three seem to have all the power now (Amazon, Microsoft, and Google) plus Cloudflare/Oracle.

How did we get here? Is it because of scale? Going to market in minutes by using someone else's computers instead of building out your own, like co-location or dedicated servers, like back in the day.
