Malician··on Alaska’s Engineering Colleges Prepare to Slash Programs, Lay Off Faculty
I talked with one of the people who's job it is to forecast the effects of cuts. The new administration's response was basically "we don't wanna hear about it and don't want to know, prepare to be reassigned."

This is not driven by accountants and budget people. This is driven by politics. Feel free to read Dunleavy's promises and budgets before election, and what he's doing now. He claimed there was hundreds of millions of easy money to be reclaimed without cutting important services. Turns out he was wrong, so he's going back on everything he said about the University and the ferry system.

He even cut funding to the courts because he didn't like one of their decisions.

Malician··on Power Is Overrated
Depending on the context, this might mean changing whether you want food, a roof over your head, not to be in jail, not to have someone else dragging your family members off to prison for saying the wrong thing..
Malician··on Study Finds Ultra-Processed Foods Drive Weight Gain
The quesadillas have, like most frozen foods in the grocery store, their calories primarily come from highly processed corn/wheat. I suspect that's a big part of the issue.
Malician··on How I Almost Destroyed a £50M War Plane and the Normalisation of Deviance (2016)
No contradiction. You can have one system, one small part of that system being no broken windows, where windows are commonly broken. You can have another system with unbroken windows. Repairing the windows and punishing people for breaking them won't magically transform the first system into the second. In fact, it might actually make things worse, depending on how it is implemented. For example, if it's already common to break windows in an area for a wide range of reasons and you start fining broke people money they can't pay and throwing them in jail... you haven't saved the windows, just caused a lot of damage.
Malician··on We Don't Have a Talent Shortage. We Have a Sucker Shortage
Hourly billing rate has to cover all the hours you can't bill for, PTO, health care, everything..
Malician··on Scribd taking down the Mueller Report is the future the EU has voted for
The Mueller Report is about as famous as you can get. That it can get taken down is proof of how messed up the system is; that it was put back up is not proof that, say, a unique, legal work you or I create would be put back up with the same speed.
Malician··on BYU Students Value Their Strict Honor Code. But Not the Harsh Punishments
A lot of people are willing to do what's convenient to keep from causing a social furor or losing connections and support. Ironically, and sadly, it's having the integrity to be forthright about your (lack of) belief that is damaging. But having your school career come crashing down on you shouldn't be one of those consequences with a federally funded institution.
Malician··on BYU Students Value Their Strict Honor Code. But Not the Harsh Punishments
If there are no barriers between the police, the sexual assault investigation department of the university, the honor code enforcement of the university, and what the religious leaders hear during private confessional (what the poster above describes):

1. Anything said to the police, the university, or during confessional can get you, the victim, in trouble with the honor code department.

2. Predators know this, so they intentionally work to get victims to break minor rules that will bring major honor code punishments down - preventing the victims from reporting real crimes, or even talking about them to anyone - the police, the relevant university departments, or even their religious leader.

This isn't about the pastor reporting evidence of a crime to authorities, this is about the honor code department destroying the integrity and value of every other law enforcement or authority and effectively protecting predators.

This happens outside BYU with drugs: predators rape victims after getting them under the influence of minor drugs which will get the victim in trouble if they go to the police.

Malician··on First-class air travel is in decline
Business is a lot less stress (they take care of everything for you the entire way; you get what you want, when you want it.)

Being bunched up in an uncomfortable position for that long in coach vs being able to lie down is a huge difference.

For an overnight flight, it's the difference between just sleeping through it and (however many) hours of hell staring blearly forward in a pained stupor, losing consciousness for a few minutes before waking up to shrieking pains from your neck and shoulder, trying unsuccessfully to sleep in a more ergonomic position before you are so tired you cradle against the window again for that precious ten minutes before the strain and impingement shake you awake..

I've tried a couple different neck pillows and they don't work for me. My head has got to be tilted downward or to the side, no matter how sleep deprived I am.

Oh, and if I go a night w/out sleep, I'm going to be 100% useless the next day and have a major impact for the next couple days while I recover.

Malician··on Dolphins apparently getting 'high' with the help of toxic puffer fish (2013)
That doesn't necessarily follow: it may occur as a result of adaptation for another, more beneficial behavior.
Malician··on Visa, Mastercard mull increasing fees for processing transactions: WSJ
I think it's as simple as - twenty years ago, there was no CSP/CSR, Amex was just a different experience. People's views/frame gets ingrained deeply. Younger people go Chase, in my experience.
Malician··on Five Years That Changed Dating
Before the change, I sometimes got responses and even a first message or two on OKCupid (!). Since the change, nothing, zilch on the site.
Malician··on In Praise of Mediocrity
I can absolutely get euphoria while pushing myself to the limit (I don't bike or wear Lycra, though.) I don't know if I have the free energy to smile in those moments...
Malician··on Researchers suggest that R.E.M. sleep serves to warm the brain
Sounds like it's not really worth sleeping during summer above the Arctic Circle, then.
Malician··on A daredevil climber risking his life for breathtaking views
I agree with your greater point, but your auto collision example is flawed.

If you say half of drivers are not at fault, it's only because we assume only one person can be at fault. Most collisions involve more than one mistake, and it's certainly possible for a sufficiently good driver to improve their odds by much better than half (there is more to defensive driving than just not making obvious mistakes.) This is not to claim, of course, that perfection is possible. Sometimes the chips are all stacked against you and there is nothing reasonable you can do.

Malician··on LAPD arrests man on suspicion of making deadly swatting call to Wichita police
This is true, if you think in terms of "behavior required to win in a fight against someone who ambushes you with intent to kill." Action beats reaction. And there's no way to maintain both your behavior and the situation of every encounter, all tens of thousands of them per officer across every officer in the country in such a way that you're safe against someone like the attackers in those videos. It can't happen.

Most people don't have combat background. They come in a range of IQs, a range of behavioral disorders, of intoxication of various means, of absurd beliefs and paranoias and irrationalities and mental health disorders. They are unpredictable and unreliable and don't use their turn signals let alone follow spot-on perfect form in an unexpected situation with adrenaline pumping.

As a result, almost everyone shot by police will have done something to "justify" it by the standard of behavior you have here. Since police usually are called on someone who is engaged in somewhat unsavory behavior (usually drug related,) it's really easy to paint the shooter in a negative light. A lot of people respond to a shooting incident with - "another lowlife, gangbanger, or meth-head, who cares?"

With cops on a hair trigger primed with videos of trained killers ambushing fellow police, any incident where a police officer gets scared for any reason could lead to your death. What this video and incident shows is that this is still true for your average Joe with no drugs and no reason to be connected to the police in any way. This is no less true for many people who were shot and killed as the result of a traffic stop or a drug bust - they didn't necessarily deserve to be killed, their death is no less tragic - it's just less evident.

Malician··on LAPD arrests man on suspicion of making deadly swatting call to Wichita police
That's not the root cause. The root cause is that if the police show up they might open fire and kill someone. There are always going to be reasons for the police (or SWAT) to show up, especially with the war on drugs. And with the current environment, that means people dying. Of course, since most of the time it wasn't a SWAT call, and the person in question probably did have drugs, it's easier to totally blame the victim.
Malician··on Cities with Uber Have Lower Rates of Ambulance Usage
If Uber says 5 minutes, it might be 7, or even possibly 15 if things go very, very wrong. Heck, if it's gonna be 15 you know this ahead of time because you can see the driver making wrong turns.

If you call a taxi service, and they say "15 minutes," it could be 30, 45, or 60. Maybe they're mussing with the truth, maybe they're outright lying. You don't know, and without the map showing the driver, you have no way of knowing.

Malician··on Amazon's Fake Review Problem
I mean, I'm just suspicious. Fakespot seems to say the reviews are dishonest, fake, overly positive for.. well, a lot of things, including my favorite pair of headphones.

They're positive because the headphones are utterly fantastic. They beat the crap out of the better-reviewed (on Amazon) Bose version. Which Fakespot gives a better grade to.

Malician··on The suicide rate for farmers in the U.S. is more than double that of veterans
Deduction, not credit. Deductions aren't nothing, but they're just a percentage. Good if you're already going to spend the money, or if it's close. But spending a dollar to save a fraction of one can bite you.
Malician··on Woman offers WaPo false tale about Roy Moore in effort to discredit the paper
From my perspective the fake "Bernie Bernstein" calls claiming to be from the WP, the disproven claims of an audio tape of WP reporters offering 1000$(sp), the claims that Olde Hickory House didn't exist at the address which were disproven by newspaper ads and other evidence, the claims that the county was dry at the time Moore was alleged to have bought girls alcohol (it was not and the pizzeria actually served wine) -

All of these come together to be a flood of unvetted claims to keep Moore ahead until the election. It doesn't matter if they're disproven because many voters hear about them and take them as gospel without ever hearing the other side of the story.

Malician··on The Western Elite from a Chinese Perspective
When the author describes "communism" or "capitalism" he appears to be writing about his experience with them as he has seem them actually practiced, rather than the theory of how they are supposed to work according to their adherents.
Malician··on Massive Government Report Says Climate Is Warming and Humans Are the Cause
That's a subcategory of one of the major arguments about CO2 being bad for as long as I can remember. Namely: the earth will do absolutely fine with rising CO2, but the ecosystem as we know it in the form we rely on will go through a period of unpredictable adaptation which could be catastrophic for us in various ways.
Malician··on Massive Government Report Says Climate Is Warming and Humans Are the Cause
But the fighting on steps 1-5 was so intense, every step of the way, and the character assassination against the scientists who advocated for them so consistent - I've lost a lot of respect for those responsible, including people close to me. It would be different if they were willing to consider possibilities and work together to find answers and solutions.
Malician··on TripAdvisor removed rape and injury warnings at Mexico resorts, tourists say
The story where someone spent a week getting their crime reported only to have the local police chief who was trying to help them murdered within weeks takes the cake. And the hotel refuses to help.
Malician··on AMD Announces 307% Increase in Q3 Earnings
Well, yes, but that's not the point being made: the stock market aggressively prices in expectations ahead of time to avoid losing money. The reason the stock goes down is because the gain is already priced in!
Malician··on With a $1k Price, Apple’s iPhone Crosses a Threshold
Agree. People will spend $1000 (or more) for relatively minor features on their cars. A phone is with you 24/7 - it's less like a tool, or even a digital assistant, and more like a cybernetic implant.

The amazing thing isn't that phones cost so much but that competition is such that you can get an excellent product with top-of-the-line CPU, radio, RAM, screen, everything for $1,000 instead of $100,000 or $1,000,000.

Malician··on Our entire credit bureau system is broken
A landlord is taking a tremendous risk by letting you rent.

Things renters can and will do include not pay rent, incurring several months (or worse) while being evicted, trashing the house.. if they behave badly or just can't quite keep up with timely payments and you have to rollover to a new renter that is pretty expensive, too.

This isn't to say credit scores are perfect, but they are so effective a predictor of conscientiousness, insurance companies rely on them to predict someone's likelihood of a car accident - on average, they work.

Malician··on Satya Nadella: DREAMers make our country and communities stronger
27 Microsoft employees are covered under this status and will presumably be deported (though I don't know if this will actually ever happen or how long it will take; practically they will have to stop working for Microsoft if their status to do so is revoked.)
Malician··on North American F-82 Twin Mustang
I don't think you can multiply costs like that. The expenses of maintaining the logistics for that many planes would be exorbitant, and I believe the unit costs of modern aircraft would be far lower if we made more of them.
