M3L0NM4N··on Building my own solar power system
>We can't all live in SF

Thanks to California zoning

M3L0NM4N··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
I use Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC, which as far as I'm aware has all the features that Pro has (plus the IoT Enterprise stuff) and zero bloat. I switched to it from my already de-bloated 11 Pro installation (because it removes some telemetry you're normally unable to disable) and have had 0 issues with it. I can't say I activated it using a normal retail product key, however, there are easy solutions to that.
M3L0NM4N··on Malicious compliance by booking an available meeting room
This is generally how my team works, but we don't have a hard cap on the time. I just think nobody wants to debate about technical implementations early in the morning.
M3L0NM4N··on I decided to pay off a school’s lunch debt
Is the overhead in deciding who gets free lunch and who doesn't and then managing the debt really saving more money than just giving all public school kids free lunches with no strings attached?
M3L0NM4N··on Elon Musk is wrong about GDP
It is funny to compare things of the magnitude of "arm wrestle to win an argument over an operating system" to the defamatory personal smears, political conspiracy theory peddling, and general stupid and crybaby behavior.
M3L0NM4N··on Elon Musk is wrong about GDP
"Outside of his area of expertise" is giving him too much credit when he's been peddling conspiracy theories.
M3L0NM4N··on Elon Musk is wrong about GDP
As one of Elon's ex-fan's (or at least had a generally positive opinion of him) like I suspect many of us here once were, it is astonishing how consistently wrong and ignorant he has been, and it has gotten worse year over year. I think there is a legitimate possibility he fried/is frying his brain on Ketamine.
M3L0NM4N··on Amazon Wants to Be a Satellite-Internet Powerhouse. It Has a Long Way to Go
I think Amazon (not Bezos) is relatively conservative in the space of "trying new things", but I'd argue when they have done it, they have a higher success rate than the other mega caps (excluding Apple I'd say). Somehow though, big tech can't seem to spend most of their cash doing it (insert that Thiel quote here).
M3L0NM4N··on Airline Demand Between Canada and United States Collapses, Down 70%+
I try not to care what other people think as long as I know I'm being a courteous and respectful individual.
M3L0NM4N··on Airline Demand Between Canada and United States Collapses, Down 70%+
I was in an EU country for a week as a tourist and an American last week, and I only got reactions ranging from neutral to positive when I told people where I was from.
M3L0NM4N··on Airline Demand Between Canada and United States Collapses, Down 70%+
Not a completely rational reason to cancel your vacation, to be honest.
M3L0NM4N··on Deregulated energy markets accelerate solar adoption
Emission reduction measured how?
M3L0NM4N··on Internet shutdowns at record high in Africa as access 'weaponised'
The same IP rules would apply to anybody hosting any site that could have the pirated streams...
M3L0NM4N··on Apple Debuts iPhone 16e
I wonder if one of those MagSafe cases that basically "passthrough" the MagSafe magnets in the phone would work.
M3L0NM4N··on American Airlines is boarding flights again after nationwide groundstop
W/B is something calculated before takeoff and wouldn't affect planes already in the air or with the W/B already loaded into the FMS.
M3L0NM4N··on Updates to H-1B
I think he poorly phrased deporting "anchor babies" by ending birthright citizenship. Since then, he's directly or indirectly claimed multiple times that he doesn't plan on deporting USCs. There's no telling whether he wants to deport USCs deep down in his heart, but he knows that's not going to happen.

M3L0NM4N··on Updates to H-1B
> deportation dragnet

Do you know how insane that sounds in this context? I absolutely despise Trump, make no mistake; but if you think Trump is rounding up any of the 40+% of the USA's non-white citizens and deporting them, you have been deluded by widespread FUD.

The "deportation dragnet" might apply to illegals, sure. Will any meaningful amount of US citizens get scooped up in that, if any? Highly, highly unlikely. You're probably more likely to be murdered.

M3L0NM4N··on Updates to H-1B
I think a natural born citizen carrying their passport everywhere starting Jan 21 is even more credulous in the other direction.
M3L0NM4N··on Can hunters' donations help deliver high-quality meat to Colorado food pantries?
Inevitably, the chunk of meat that was impacted by the vehicle is less deer meat and more deer jello. The less battered parts of the deer can be fine, though.
M3L0NM4N··on AI Guesses Your Accent
A part of my family is from rural southern Illinois. There is certainly an accent, and not a pretty one.
M3L0NM4N··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
As a flight simmer, definitely going to check this out.
M3L0NM4N··on USC Student Rocket Group Shatters International Amateur Space Record
I think it's used as both. Foot-pounds is used as a unit of work, so it's a force in that context.
M3L0NM4N··on Declassified Pentagon F-35 Study Details Reliability, Security Woes
You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about if you say the F35B is the most sold F35 variant. It’s the F35A*.

It’s also STOVL, not SVTOL. You slapped an S in front of VTOL instead of thinking about what the acronym really means.

*From f35.com - Designed to operate from conventional runways, the F-35A is the most common variant operated by the United States Air Force and most international allied customers.

M3L0NM4N··on ICC issues warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas officials
Unflinchingly? Biden did a lot to restrict military aid/sales if weapons that would likely have lots of collateral damage.
M3L0NM4N··on ICC issues warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas officials
Uh, how did you jump to that conclusion?
M3L0NM4N··on Two undersea cables in Baltic Sea disrupted
I am NOT his best friend.
M3L0NM4N··on Electromagnetic coil gun seized in Japan
I agree that may be a reason politicians ban weapons in similar laws, but I believe that is a really stupid reason.

In this situation, it does appear to me that the law insufficiently specifies what is legal, and it is unfortunate that this came down to an enforcement decision.

M3L0NM4N··on Electromagnetic coil gun seized in Japan
It looks awesome to be honest and is probably part of the reason it scared the authorities. Had it looked more like a miniature potato cannon, I'm not sure they would've thought it any more dangerous than a slingshot.

Kind of reminds me how California's assault weapon ban seems to be quite centered around how "scary" the firearm looks, and not the capabilities of the weapon.

M3L0NM4N··on Minuteman missile communications
I just started a software engineering job at Lockheed Martin a couple weeks ago working on communication systems. Not sure if I can say what though to be honest, and I’m going to err on the side of safety here. I’ll be working on F-22 communications in a few months when/if my program clearance comes through. Super cool so far though.
M3L0NM4N··on Facebook caught snooping on Snapchat users. What is going on?
Engineers may not even realize the scope of what they’re contributing to. That was not the case with Nazis.
