LukaD··on An adult fruit fly brain has been mapped
Yes, that was the joke.
LukaD··on What's inside the QR code menu at this cafe?
It's still there on archive.org https://web.archive.org/web/20240923053856/https://peabee.su...
LukaD··on Just use Postgres
> Try to avoid the bespoke features of psql in favor of generic SQL unless cornered by circumstances into doing so, methinks.

Why? To make migration to another database easier? I've never had the need to migrate any application away from postgres. I usually take full advantage of what the database can do.

LukaD··on ASCII 3D Renderer for JavaScript
This video goes into depth about ASCII rendering as a post processing effect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gg40RWiaHRY
LukaD··on Show HN: XDeck – An ad-blocking client app for macOS, like TweetDeck
I don’t understand why people even use twitter at all at this point.
LukaD··on Mongoose IM 6.2.1 – Erlang Solutions robust, scalable and efficient XMPP server
You're not the only one, I've had the same experience with matrix and there was a blog post at the top of HN a few months ago titled "The Matrix Trashfire".
LukaD··on Nintendo(1)
> 9Front is a distribution of the Plan 9 operating system

Ah that's the info I was missing, thanks! Indeed very interesting that emulators are part of the distribution.

LukaD··on Nintendo(1)
What am I looking at? I can see it's a man page for some emulators but I feel like I'm missing some context. The site seems to be deliberately obtuse about what it is.
LukaD··on The Matrix Trashfire
I have been using matrix from time to time to chat with some folks who prefer matrix over other chat systems for reasons unknown. Matrix is an absolute trash fire indeed. Every once in a while a chat session with someone just craps itself and my client is unable to decrypt received messages (both element and element x). The issue then usually fixes itself within a couple of days. The bad UX aside, a chat system should at let me reliably send and receive messages. The other issues I had were related to the device verification. The last time I wanted to verify a new phone the verification request simply did not arrive on my other devices. At that point I gave up on matrix.
LukaD··on 8BitDo Micro
I have one of those and it’s exactly what I expected it to be. A fun gimmick but nothing I would use for more than 5 minutes at a time. It’s probably good for little kids.
LukaD··on Maybe Rust isn’t a good tool for massively concurrent, userspace software
Rust is not race condition free, it guarantees no data races though.
LukaD··on Thoughts on Elixir, Phoenix and LiveView after 18 months of commercial use
> That's an interesting view. I tend to use Live Components whenever I'm rendering a list, because if you don't, you'll quickly notice how the entire list gets re-rendered and sent over the wire whenever one of the elements on the list changes.

That's what streams are for https://hexdocs.pm/phoenix_live_view/Phoenix.LiveView.html#s...

LukaD··on Kchat: Persistent group chat in <50 lines using kdb+/k/q web sockets, JavaScript
Came here to ask the same. kx.com is just some marketing page. I still have no idea what kdb+/k/q is.
LukaD··on Simulate Asteroid Impacts on Earth
The app probably uses something `navigator.language` to determine which unit to use. Unfortunately the browser doesn't expose any API to get the user's preferred measurement units. I assume it works for you because your browser locale is not en-us.
LukaD··on Valve's latest Steam Deck trailer briefly plugs a Nintendo Switch emulator
Downloading roms is certainly not illegal, sharing them is. From my experience most older Nintendo games are not available for purchase. I would gladly pay to play classic Pokémon for example games on the switch (or on Steam).
LukaD··on Switching from pyenv, rbenv, goenv and nvm to asdf
I had the same exact same experience. If the uninstallation wasn't such a pain in the ass I might even give nix another try in the future.
LukaD··on The Polar Bear – Open-Source, Multipurpose CNC Machine with a Rotary Axis
It looks really nice but it's a usability nightmare in my opinion. Swiping back with the touchpad doesn't work. Pinch to zoom doesn't work. Page up/down and home/end don't work. Most clickable elements are not focusable I'm not trying to shit on the devs here. I just wish more developers were more mindful of usability/accessibility. Bonus: Press tab a couple times to break the scrolling.
LukaD··on “Shared libraries are not a good thing in general”
Torvalds and the OP are talking about userland software.
LukaD··on Rust Language Cheat Sheet
Wow I forgot how unergonomic go can be. And that example even is a potential memory leak...
LukaD··on DJI FPV
> - Low res analog video -> high res digital video

> - Modest transmission range -> long range

Those are not really new. DJI has been selling their standalone digital FPV system for a while now. And there are lot's of different long range radio systems available.

But I agree that this is impressive. I wonder if Betaflight, etc. will also implement some kind of bail out feature.

LukaD··on My chatbot is dead – Why yours should probably be too
The site is an absolute usability nightmare. Why can't I have a scrollbar?
LukaD··on My least favorite Rust type
It does indeed require PartialOrd and the author has already fixed the mistake. But I wonder why PartialOrd is implemented for ().
LukaD··on Deno 1.4
I would even say it's a political one.
LukaD··on Deno 1.4
When people say they don't want tech companies/organisations to be political they're actually bummed out that those political views don't align with they're own.
LukaD··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
It was not a hack. It was just a lot of doxxing. There was really nothing impressive about it.
LukaD··on Ask HN: Thoughts on new GitHub layout?
The new layout is so bad I no longer click on Github links...
LukaD··on Don't set the language of your website based on user location
Yeah, that's incredibly annoying. So frustrating when you're coming to a discourse thread from a google search. I tend to avoid discourse forums because of that.
LukaD··on Don't set the language of your website based on user location
I'm willing to bet there is no modern browser that does this.
LukaD··on Don't set the language of your website based on user location
> Even the language selection was hidden in a sub-sub-sub menu somewhere, which took some digging.

I think it was hidden in the accessibility menu... This made me absolutely furious when I couldn't figure out how to change the game's language to the one that my Windows installation is using.

LukaD··on Dockerizing a Ruby on Rails Application
Instead of compiling assets externally, you could do it in a multi stage docker build.
