It is a core language feature as of Ada95. Ada, unlike most other languages generates calls into the standard library to implement complex features, controlled types and tasks are two such features. And no, I don't mean generating simple calls to compiler intrinsics.

But when you're coming from an open source perspective, or just expect tools to be free, like they mostly are for other languages (and should be imo), then those other vendors don't matter as you cannot afford them anyway and AdaCore becomes the only vendor, you can't afford gnatpro either btw.

I learnt m68k on an Amiga 500+ in a week, it's a decent assembly language which a lot of CPU manufacturers could learn a lot from.

FSF GNAT hasn't been MGPL for years, not even sure which version, but I think it's before 4.9.4. FSF GNAT is GPLv3 with linking exception.

Hopefully, they'll release the cores as OpenMIPS like OpenSPARC did.

Most languages just go with machine size "types" and no strict typing on those. I've not seen any other languages do what Ada does. I've got my project to do so though.

Yeah, it's horrible to see and worse to type. I took Oberon-2's grammar and changed it to a more Ada like one for a project I'm working on.

Yeah, heard of it, that is all though.

Yeah, ranges and modular types for me, without them data modelling is hindered severely.

All caps haven't been a part of the language since Ada83, go check the follow up spec, Ada95. Maybe you're thinking of Niklaus Wirth's languages, the Modula's and Oberon?

That stems from the hatred from the people working at the DoD at the time who'd never even seen the language.

You can write massive programs without a pointer in sight. If you have to import any C, then it's made a lot worse. You're better off doing memory mapped register type stuff in Ada.

I was at uni in 1995, they used gnat 3.15p.

Sounds like a psycho to me. If you change the name of a variable in any language it will ripple through other modules.

With Ada, in his modules, he could've done this:

    Old_Name : Type_Name renames New_Name;

If you're using hard coded constants instead of actual constants, you deserve the pain of changing it everywhere.

    Something_Lower  : constant := 0;
    Something_Higher : constant := 255;

    type Something is range Something_Lower .. Something_Higher;

Is how you do it. Changing the higher value to 65535 or anything else won't ripple.

Now, you do that in C, you've got hardcoded magic numbers all over the place and the compiler would've just silently compiled without warning. Have fund debugging that mess.
