LosWochosWeek··on Using foot pedals for modifier keys in Linux (2014)
I know this sounds ridiculous, but my left pinky is a hot head that doesnt want to play nice with the rest of it's siblings. Its crazy how often I try to convince myself that one day I'll buy a foot pedal and use it as a shift key.

> I'd rather not rely on promises that GC works great, or is very tunable.

I'm always puzzled by statements like these. What else do you want to rely on? The best answer I can think of is "The promise that my own code will work better", but even then: I don't trust my own code, my past self has let me down too many times. The promise that code from my colleagues will do better than GC? God forbid.

It's not like not having a GC means that you're reducing the surface area. You're not. What you're doing is taking on the responsibility of the GC and gambling on the fact that you'll do the things it does better.

The only thing that I can think of that manually memory managed languages offer vs GC languages is the fact that you can "fix locally". But then again, you're fixing problems created by yourself or your colleagues.

How about: "Pretty much exactly what I do know, but with more time and less [gesturing around] this"

I thought once I made more money I'd get around doing more stuff, but turns out I'm quite content with my life. Honestly, winning the lottery would put too much stress into my life. All I'd think about is how to include my closest friends in my new found wealth.

My man, there are people allergic to the sun. --- Forget about that. There are people allergic to themselves.

Don't trust your brain to not fuck you up any chance it'll get. Because it will do.

> sue for trademark infringements

Yeah, maybe at the piracy trademark comission on pirate island... For obvious reasons Vanced had no trademark on anything and thus can't sue for trademark infringements.

They could possibly sue for a copyright infringement, but for that they'd have to prove that they do in fact hold a copyright on whatever they're suing for. They'd have to prove that (whatever) indeed is either (a) an original work that's protected under copyright or (b) it's a derivative work that's protected under copyright.

How can people actually believe that? Sure, a 'deleted-an-hour-after-posting' tweet is what made Google muster up all their lawyers to take down an app that millions used to circumvent paying for YouTube Premium and/or watch ads.

It was a stupid coincident. Google would've killed Vanced sooner or later.

>No amount of "good features" would've caused people to abandon Vanced and switch to vanilla YouTube

Maybe for the majority of people, but surely I'm not the only one who would go back to Vanilla YouTube and pay for Premium if you could run Sponsorblock. I'm not paying 10 bucks a month to get rid of ads just to be bombarbed by "goofy" segways into mid-video commercials.

Sponsorblock - to me - is the killer feature of Vanced. It's crazy how much of a video is just stupid fluff that nobody has any use or need for.

> I hate all the python plotting libraries.

I've given up discussing this. My personal opinion is that MPL is the assembly vs ggplots2's Python.

Yes, maybe there are some things that are doable in MPL but not in ggplot2, but never (and I mean - never -) has any one of my colleagues found a single example that I couldnt recreate in ggplot2 with a more readable code that resulted in a better looking plot.

MPL has this Latex like "once you get the hang of it, you will never use anything else in life for anything" and OOP's "If its good code then it is OOP and if its not, then you're not doing correct OOP" mythisque hanging over it. When confronted with bad MPL code that results in bad plots, its always one of those two.

ggplot2 is the best plotting package out there and imo one of the best "end-user" packages in any language. Also, Hadley is a saint.

Your comment seems unreasonable to me. What exactly does it mean to enjoy things to you?

Sure, it's physically possible to read any part of Ulysses as there are no physical barriers but for what gain? You're not going to pull any enjoyment out of reading the last few pages of Ulysess. The non existing barrier is a moot point.

The only way of enjoying the last pages of Ulysess is by enjoying the whole thing. And to enjoy Ulysess, you havr to put in your time and go through hoops that aren't usual for most other books. I feel like it's very disingenuous to say that the only reason you haven't read Ulysess is bc you didn't enjoy it. Enjoying Ulysess contains enjoying going the extra mile for it.

How is that different from the Souls games?

LosWochosWeek··on The Boschian Horror of ‘Elden Ring’
I have to disagree.

It's not the dark art that makes Dark Souls unique. It's the combination of deep lore that isn't fully explained or explainable in the game, world building that somehow finds a way to look and feel extremely realistic and fitting while being dreamlike and fantastical at many points, a story that couldn't care less if you followed it, NPCs building an inescapable spell on your mind with 3 lines of non-sensical dialogue, and dark art that underlines and brings all those things together.

There certainly aren't many games like that out there. I'd wager very few to nine, to be honest.

On the contrary, there are boatloads Soulslike games out there that imitate the gameplay (including the difficulty and risk of death) that cannot even be mentioned with being in the same league as the original Souls games. If anything, in the year 2022 it's the Souls gameplay that's "generic" while the rest of the game is still unique in every sense of the word.

LosWochosWeek··on The Boschian Horror of ‘Elden Ring’
I'll one up you on that one: I kinda enjoy the Souls gameplay (in the most generic "I like winning" way) but it's everything around the gameplay what makes me want to play the games.

Then again, I do that for many things. Video games, tabletop games and even non-interactive media like comics, books, mangas. It's probably a faulty switch in my brain, but somehow I enjoy reading about and looking at the art of X (currently and fittingly to this thread, Berserk) more than consuming X.

I'm really curious how some people can bend their own minds in such a way that Russia invading a sovereign country is somehow the fault of "The West".

With all due respect, there was nothing to negotiate. Practically every world leader came to Putin's virtual doorsteps and tried to negotiate. Olaf Scholz even hinted at the fact that Ukraine wont be able to join NATO anyways bc of various reasons. But none of that helped. Putin has nuclear bombs. If we were to bend to his will bc he threatened to invade Ukraine, then we might as well pack our stuff, bc he has bigger threats. I can already see the messages on our post-nuclear-winter internet "Well, Proto-Putin threatened to start a nuclear war. The West had every chance to just allow him to crown himself Godking of Earth. This was the West's fault!".

I'm sorry but your worldview is cynical.

> so I am convinced the war could have been stopped,

Yes, by Putin. But he didnt. And that's somehow the fault of the West, I guess?

LosWochosWeek··on A 2030 Self-Driving Car Bet
What do you mean by "operate a self driving car"? That's the point of SAE5: You can't really operate a SAE5 vehicle other than telling it where to go. No steering wheel, no gas pedal, no brake pedal, no nothing. There is no way you could argue that the owner of a SAE5 car is responsible for it. You might as well be legally responsible for the bus, train, airplane you ride in.
