Lord-Jobo··on White House loyalty rating for companies
HN has a whole lot of people trying to make it really big financially, for a huge variety of reasons. One of the things that excludes someone from that group is an understanding that our culture is dominated by the idea that wealth is the first, biggest, best priority.

We collectively give the wealthy extra protection, status, and influence. Basically every definition or subcategory of power.

When you do this, it creates a disgusting race to the bottom from those trying to reach the top. We are seeing the ultimate result of that: a mafia kingdom. A feudal clown show.

You will see a weirdly large amount of people supporting that here because a large number of people have conditioned morality out of their ideology. Or reduced it to a very superficial level, completely subservient to the almighty dollar. "Greed is good", "the ECONOMY", "my peers do it so it's okay". And in and on and on.

In short, many would be doing the same thing in the same position and they can't see just how amoral that is. And how it reflects the utter rot that is our culture.

Lord-Jobo··on Online Safety Act – shutdowns and site blocks
Rising since 2015, but legitimately barely. Enough to look into and attempt to remedy of course, but nowhere near enough to justify the absolutely unhinged rhetoric constantly being used to justify awful legislation and amoral crackdowns.

You can specifically look at people's assumption at violent crime rates charted against actual violent crime rates and see that the gap has never been wider.

Also, 1980 to 2025 is not a "very specific time frame" and it still shows the trend described above. Very large cliff in the 90s we are still nowhere near.

Lord-Jobo··on Teacher AI use is already out of control and it's not ok
It's culture. American culture treats teaching and education like a free babysitting service, and pays teachers accordingly.

If our culture valued education we would value teachers and their ability to teach, and we so clearly do not.

Lord-Jobo··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
The largest type theft done in the United States, by far, for decades, is wage theft. In terms of dollars stolen.

All other forms of serious crime have dramatically fallen since the 90's per Capita. Some are at 1/3 the rate they were then. (FBI UCR)

remember that next time you see a headline or politician speak about crime.

We are safer, doing less crime to each other, and seeing more prison population than ever before.

While corporations crush us illegally and face no consequences.

Lord-Jobo··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
This is absolutely true, but that is exactly how culture spreads now. Through products/software/media.

American business software, American movies, American YouTube channels. They will inject American problems and solutions into your country, like it or not.

Microsoft may treat your privacy slightly better because of the GDPR, but those invasive systems are still there, toggled off. Waiting for Microsofts lobbying to chip away at the privacy laws until they can turn them on.

Lord-Jobo··on iPhone 16 cameras vs. traditional digital cameras
Im grateful I can still shoot raw on my pixel 8 and edit myself from there. But at that point I will just grab the dslr. A used canon eos 100d is like, startlingly cheap on eBay, I think I picked mine up for $150 a few years ago with a decent lens and it still demolishes any smartphone without much effort.
Lord-Jobo··on iPhone 16 cameras vs. traditional digital cameras
A decade of "the best smartphone camera competitions" by mkbhd have clearly highlighted what is happening here.

1: In a/b testing, nearly everyone including pixel peepers prefer a more vibrant photo.

2: the traditional perspective of "a photo should look as close as possible to what my eyes see if I drop the viewfinder" is increasingly uncommon and not pursued in the digital age by nearly anyone.

3: phone companies know the above, and basically all of them engage in varrying degrees of "crank vibrance until people start to look like clowns, apply a skin correction so you can keep the rest mega vibrant" with an extra dash of "if culturally accepted to the primary audience, add additional face filtering to improve how people look, including air-brushing and thinning of the face"

This is rightfully compared to the loudness wars and I think that's accurate. It really became a race to the bottom once we collectively decided that "accurate" photos were not interesting and we want "best" photos.

Lord-Jobo··on 4k NASA employees opt to leave agency through deferred resignation program
James webb is the perfect example of why we absolutely need NASA and what they do.

Did the budget balloon and delays rack up? Yup, and if you read about why you will see that it was basically unavoidable. A private business would have canceled it at the first roadblock (depriving us of an INCREDIBLE scientific tool).

And for the actual launch and deployment, the cost of the instrument meant that a very high success rate was very very important. Go ahead and look up the success rate of space X launches and tell me you would put a multi billion dollar tool on their rocket. You need someone who can spend more money, even a lot more money, and guarantee success.

Lord-Jobo··on 4k NASA employees opt to leave agency through deferred resignation program
Hey everyone, consider looking at the Wikipedia page for an agency before posting piss-takes on social media regarding that agency.

Sending things to space is a small part of what NASA does. "Aeronautics" is not "space rocketry", and all federal agencies do more than what their name indicates.

Lord-Jobo··on 4k NASA employees opt to leave agency through deferred resignation program
> Sounds less like a hot take than a false dichotomy? The only choice is one of two non-specific analogies?

It's several assumptions deep to get to that kind of statement which is even more.... Interesting.

First, you have to assume that all federal agencies are the same, so if one needs to be smaller or more efficient, clearly they all need to be. Or if you have experience with one agency, others must be the same. And that your personal experience is representative. This is hilarious for a category so broad that it includes homeland security and NASA.

Secondly, you have to get very reductive about the direction of these agencies. Big agencies? "Well we HAVE to do SOMETHING!" When of course "just leave it alone, go after the actually expensive and wasteful things in our economy like health insurance or the military" is ignored.

Thirdly you need to assume that anyone involved with actually managing this process gives a single shit about the issue at hand. And they don't. Nobody who gave a shit about efficiency, the size/budget of federal agencies, or the power of the federal government would vote to +265% the budget of ICE. that's year over year, by the way. Nor would they approve the largest deficit increase ever moved through congress.

These people are jangling keys in front of your face and taking the money out of your wallet. And by discussing these cuts in good faith at all, we are reaching for the keys.

More like none healthcare for the bottom 20%, bankruptcy for the next 20%, and acceptable coverage for the rest.

Great system...

Lord-Jobo··on Web fingerprinting is worse than I thought (2023)
The core issue is that politically you gain nearly no votes and definitely no money by running with regulation as a pillar of your campaign.

In fact, doing so will often times end up bringing donations from relevant industries directly to your opponent.

Now, this system of perverse incentive and legal bribery should be fixed at the constitutional level but thats a gigantic can of worms.

In the current system there are two methods that can circumvent the issue. The first is one deployed by the likes of Elizabeth Warren; run your campaign on a broad array of "fighting for your constituents" and don't get specific until you see already elected and drafting a bill.

The second path is underutilized and should be done more: lie out your ass to the moneyed interests. Take their money, make them promises, eat at their fancy dinners, befriend them, laugh at their awful jokes. Then just fucking dunk on them in the legislature, as quietly as possible. Make a big show of being forced to, keep the charade going as long as possible.

The inverse of this has been done a lot recently, with Sinema, with Fetterman. But the good version is quite rare, and a good opportunity to make our country a better place.

Key notes: tough to do in bigger positions because they're rarely the first public office seats people hold, so track records build. Tough to do in many districts because voters can be rubes who actively agree with the corporations stomping on their nards. Tough to do if you make too large of a profile(not really a concern).

Lord-Jobo··on Beyond Meat fights for survival
I am in a similar group; the mostly-vegetarian. Chicken when I don't have a real choice, red meat at a wedding like once a year or something.

I like beyond meat products, the price is obviously a problem but they go on sale locally frequently enough to be a good substitute for us.

Something about them I HATE though is that they have two burger products that are extremely similar with one main difference: product A is kept frozen and requires thawing to cool properly and product B is kept frozen and cooks from frozen.

They are so similar that we accidentally get the wrong one all the time.

Once cooked, both products are indistinguishable from an eating perspective. Get product A the fuck outta here, please.

Lord-Jobo··on Where's Firefox going next?
Most browser games(I play an absolute shit ton) run WAY better on chrome than Firefox, on both macOS and Android.

Not sure about Windows where I play full real games.

Lord-Jobo··on The great displacement is already well underway?
We are literally halfway to a nearly guaranteed recession, by definition. A lot of the sentiment in this thread reflects that.
Lord-Jobo··on Apple: "millions to billions" lost without App Store commissions

Lord-Jobo··on That Time I Recreated Photoshop in C++
I think the biggest hurdle is that the shortcuts, ui, and workflows all feel different for the sake of being different. Why reinvent the wheel on it?

I also hate this idea that we aren't allowed to give feedback on open source software. I get it, it's an incredibly thankless thing to do, but feedback of "having to relearn all of this stuff is unpleasant" isn't a problematic thing

Lord-Jobo··on Ozempic and Wegovy are selected for Medicare's price negotiations
I mean yes but there is no solution to that problem, but there are many tried and true solutions to the other problem, so this just reads as deflection
Lord-Jobo··on How to delete your Facebook account
Made a very fake account filled with very fake info, using a blurry profile picture of a random person on LinkedIn who looks very vaguely like me.

Might as well poison the well if I'm going to have the account for marketplace

Lord-Jobo··on Warren Buffett is no longer donating his money at death to the Gates Foundation
The ultra wealthy have (correctly) read the room in the U.S. and realized the the oligarchy has won and fully completed it's metamorphosis; there is no longer any reason to play pretend about it.

I can partially confirm: 2.4ghz, or at least the common USB mouse implementation, is very susceptible to interference, it's sent me down a few wild rabbit holes with my Basilisk v3

Lord-Jobo··on Trump wins presidency for second time
I've said this in other places:

With now full control of the government, it is trivial for him to have the supreme court overturn the 22nd amendment and rig a third election. Absolutely trivial.

Lord-Jobo··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Absolutely not.

It's clear with how people ranked issues on exit polls,

Absolutely nobody would have won for the Democrats. The economic sentiment was too powerfully negative

Lord-Jobo··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Yes, if the competitors product was a mass immolation machine known for both working as intended and causing wildfires.
