Lord-Jobo··on Flock Exposed Its AI-Powered Cameras to the Internet. We Tracked Ourselves
They aren’t people that should be walking free, if we are being honest. Lock them up until we can get enough prison reform to genuinely try to rehabilitate them. The damage they are doing to our country is too high to hedge on this issue.

>“That’s so extreme, they just shouldn’t have power, freedom is paramount, return to normal” etc.

Sorry, too late for this. I advocated for more gentle measures 10 years ago when they were possible/plausibly effective. Just like any other infection, if you wait too long to address the problem you are forced towards extreme action. Or death. No third option.

Interviews tuned properly for the position are almost always 95% talking with a decent trial/probation period. If they have the general credentials and can talk competently about the detail work, there is no benefit for either party doing these asinine code challenges.

The problems that spawn these leetcode barriers are WAY better solved at the source.

Prob 1: the interviewer doesn’t know shit about the actual role. I know it’s an uncommon opinion, but this should just not happen ever. I would gladly sit in on a speaking interview for my would-be coworkers, with the hiring manager, to check this. And the actual manager should be present and knowledgeable too. But 3 employees doing something is too much $ I guess.

Prob 2: credentials and high degrees are prolific, super mandatory, but also treated like they are meaningless. Experience is borderline ignored entirely. Worked with a software deeply for 10 years, but your cert is out of date? You won’t even get past the computerized HR filter. But because this is so openly stupid, companies tack on leetcode as another filter instead of rethinking the value of experience and relying on probation and bullshit detectors.

Get lumped in with the wrong manager, in the eyes of the VP positions, and it can deadend your whole career. They can be a decent manager too. But if they aren’t compatible with their boss, it will burn you all the same.
Lord-Jobo··on No AI* Here – A Response to Mozilla's Next Chapter
They already have hidden these in about:config!

Right click anywhere, (ask an AI chatbot) right there. Go to settings, search AI or search Chatbot, nothing.

Lord-Jobo··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
Because the AI implementations they’ve already done are shit? Buttons on by default, features that are annoying to remove for normal users (the context menu ‘search with chatbot’). It’s just garbage, get this shit out of here. Stop adding things to my window without permission and stop with the popups announcing them to me. Anyone who seriously wants this will seek it out. Leave the rest of us alone.

“Trust x,y” will also basically never mean “trust, completely, always, equally, and blindly”.

Trust the science was a shorthand for “you, or even I, may not understand this thing in perfect detail, but the people working on it do, and they GENERALLY aren’t making catastrophic mistakes that you can detect as an amateur. And when these people collectively stand behind a conclusion the odds of it being completely wrong are exceptionally low. We don’t have a more accurate alternative regardless. Please stop JAQing off about it”

But writing all of that over and over again is annoying. And a lot of “”””critical thinkers”””” can’t be bothered to read it. So the shorthand emerges. Sometimes used incorrectly? Definitely.

Not only does the Peter principle generally show more incompetence the higher up a structure you move, but the outsized influence those positions have make for a very noticeably higher level of “things fucked up by incompetence“ coming from the C suite compared to the rest of the structure.

There’s definitely plenty of incompetence regardless. But I’ve never seen a company where the incompetence was more noteworthy in the cog positions than “leadership”.

Lord-Jobo··on Microsoft Will Preload Windows 11 File Explorer to Fix Bad Performance
The slow consistent degeneration of file explorer, the primary core service for users in the entire OS, is truly a sign of the times at Msoft.

This shit crashes all the time in our office workflow, hard restarting explorer process. USB issues, soft freezing on certain types of file transfer.

Mapping drives and credentials integration have been bugged as fuck for at least 3 years. I shouldn’t have to edit every connection in our office in credential manager to fix this.

And anything happening with the explorer process is infuriating to try and diagnose. It almost never throws an error code or event code when it fucks up. So good luck trying to fix it yourself.

Copy and pasted some change in some file, save, restart, fully totally bricked.

Lord-Jobo··on What I learned about creativity from a man painting on a treadmill (2024)
Bad writing examples here in separate comment, lots of recency bias with them, they’re almost all litrpgs, but they’re cheap! And bad is a strong word. It’s probably more fair to say they have notable faults to me.

——

Bad prose with good ideas and flow: -defiance of the fall 1 -the primal hunter 1

Bad structural flow and immersion breaking: -bibliomancer 1

Polarizing characterization with strong Voice: -he who fights with monsters 1

Most improved book to book: -The cradle series. First book is intentionally stilted, but just difficult to read. Author quickly adjusts away from this.

Lord-Jobo··on What I learned about creativity from a man painting on a treadmill (2024)
This was my process. The outline is very long but fairly simple and hopefully it will at least give you some ideas. It also presumes you will not have an editor or friend that will give real critical feedback for at least 6 months.

——

Write your first complete story, ideally one that is under 2000 words. Something basic, short, and familiar without being a ripoff of anything in particular.

Then keep writing stories that way until you’ve forgotten most of the details of the first story. read it now from an outsider perspective and note the things that don’t work.

The most common offenders early on will almost certainly be phrases or modifiers that are repeated too often(“to be quite honest”, “suddenly, x happened”) as well as sentence structures that do not flow well or require re-reading to parse. This is all easy to fix; simplify the complex sentences and substitute common phrases to expand your prose.

After quick and dirty adjustments, keep writing new short stories. Then reread again and adjust, again. Eventually you’ll have a “library” of like 10-20 stories that you’ll either know way too well to acquire the easy outsider perspective, or have hammered into an acceptable quality.

At this point writing ~specific~ short stories is a good idea. For me, I focused on methods. So it looked like this: -Start with a strong visual and go -Start with an ending and go -Start with a strong emotional event and go -Start with one well defined character and go -Start with a writing style/intention, mimic a real author -Start with an intended audience reaction

generally the later attempts should be more difficult and more specific. For example, write the same story twice from radically different perspectives. Force out a story in iambic pentameter. Things like that.

Batch 2 does 2 things fairly organically. One, it implicitly teaches you what KIND of writing you enjoy while helping you hone your own voice. Secondly, it forces you to examine the actual structure and components of a story and how configurable they are without diving into anything formal or educational. That last part was important to me because it’s VERY easy to absorb too much of an authors style by listening to them talk about writing, and formal education takes all the fun out of writing.

Worth noting; this second batch of stories will probably suck. hard. Worse than the first. They are handicapped and probably very difficult to complete well. That’s okay. Examine them the same way you did with the first batch.

Offenders you might start to notice now: -pacing. It’s one of the more complex problems because it’s really hard to examine and there’s no real rules. But you’ll see it with that outsiders perspective; sometimes you just spend way too long on some things and way too little on others. -description. This is super personal, some authors rarely describe more than the literal events of the story, and occasionally mannerism. Some authors go super super hard on describing environments, what characters look like, how things make characters feel. What’s more important here is feeling out a ceiling and floor. Fall below the floor and you can’t imagine the scene or setting at all. Rise over the ceiling and the pacing and flow will tank, the audience will be bored to death. -consistency and flow. Inconsistencies between sections of the story and sudden jumps that don’t feel precipitated will immediately yank the audience out of the story, and they can be tricky to avoid because ~you~ know where the story is going but the audience won’t.

At this stage, the trick you’ll probably want to learn is to summon the outsider perspective on demand. regularly. At different stages of writing. Honestly this worked out best for me by literally inventing a character in my head named Joe Averageguy. He has a dopey voice. And I “ask” him what he thinks frequently while I’m writing. This has many downsides that you can probably guess but it does solve the problem I had with summoning that audience perspective.

After this? Well, you’ve probably been writing for like a year, hopefully with some consistency. Push yourself out of the nest however you see fit. Pursue a significantly longer story, have someone you know read some of your stuff, shut you could realistically publish something with how open that process is now.

Also: consider having an LLM critically examine a story or two (if you can get it in the context window) KNOWING FIRST that your story now belongs to OpenAI or whoever. This approach still has real value; it’s one of the only things those LLMs are consistently good at and it is nearly immediate reasonable feedback. And that is going to be HARD to find. Don’t just say “critically examine this”, process, and bail. Probe it with many questions like similar authors or target audience information. When possible, modify the LLM to not be a sycophantic worm. Just never let it feed you direct phrases or sentences. All LLMs have a firstly distinct voice, and that voice sucks. Don’t let it inject your writing or your brain with its bland corporate filth.

Lord-Jobo··on What I learned about creativity from a man painting on a treadmill (2024)
I had a very similar experience that gave me permission to pursue hobby-level writing. I read a very long series of books (Defiance of the Fall) that starts with frankly terrible writing (sorry Jeff if you somehow read this) but also contained some genuinely good concepts.

Not only is this a pretty successful series but it’s 16 books long! The writing gets progressively better and the strong concepts (heavily borrowed or otherwise) carry it through. The latest books are not legendary or anything like that but I really do enjoy them and the writing no longer gets in the way of that.

This sort of progression is way more inspirational to me than reading Hemingway’s best or listening to a Ted Talk. It’s objective clear evidence that you can just start writing, even releasing the weak stuff, and both succeed and improve simultaneously.

Lord-Jobo··on Ultra-processed food linked to harm in every major human organ, study finds
The easy answer that encompasses 99% of the target foods is:

Avoid any foods that involve multiple rounds of processing, a term that includes baking, frying, adding preservatives, sugars or oils. Generally, if it has a lot of sugar or oil and has a weirdly long shelf life, be suspicious.

Drift towards: easily washable (smooth/peelable) fruits and vegetables, 100% whole wheat bread products, simple meat products like whole animal parts or deboned animal parts.

Dairy lives in the middle ground. If you have zero lactose problem, most dairy is mostly okay, just watch for sugar levels and recognize that most dairy products are calorie dense. Nuts are in this group too for the same reason but oil instead of sugar.

Bonus points for consuming real pro and pre biotics when you can. In the United States this is pretty limited to live culture yogurts, refrigerated kimchi, and refrigerated sourkraut.

Lord-Jobo··on Ultra-processed food linked to harm in every major human organ, study finds
Tangent because I do think you are asking a pretty clear question, but I find it’s much more helpful in these discussions to specify why(mechanical explanation) from why(elaborate on known info) from why(what is the human reason for an action).

Because you really can interpret any of these in a lot of the situations where someone is asking “why”.

Lord-Jobo··on Leaving Meta and PyTorch
80% lucky, 10% low standards, 10% hard work.

In short I went from a small company position with very little growth and constant paycheck delays to a job with very clear monthly metric goals and a manager that lets me pursue projects for our office and client that actually help and improve everyone’s experience.

My field is really small and most hiring managers/HR people frankly have no clue how to hire for it, so I have a genuinely great resume and still got ghosted for many positions I was easily qualified for.

So hopping from a low paying position I was very tired with, to a job with daily activities I actually enjoy, that pays way more appropriately, was a several year process when it would be a 2 month process in a bigger field.

Realistically if I had to attribute anything in particular it’s these two things:

1: knowing what kind of work would actually fulfill me, which turned out to be fairly repetitive grunt work with 10% special projects.

2: learning our primary software VERY well. I have not met any other analyst who knows the quirks and tricks as well as I do, but that mostly just comes from 8 years of struggling with it and their nonexistent customer support.

The low standards are important for this as well because I am making 15% over the median personal income, and many people on here have ambitions WAY higher than that. But my partner makes double what I do, we have no kids, and we have cheap rent for our area so I really am thankful for what we have.

Pursuing what actually interests me is easy as well because I’m happy with a job that’s 90% assembly line work and 10% actually novel project work.

Lord-Jobo··on AMD continues to chip away at Intel's x86 market share
Userbench is openly mega biased and fudges their own test scores against AMD, it’s so bad it shouldn’t even be listed in search results,

There are also many criticisms against CPUbennchmark that are much more minor like its over simplified testing leading to weird anomalous score gaps between extremely similar CPU’s.

For the average consumer, I think cpu benchmark is fine and probably as good as you can ask for without getting into the weeds which defeats the purpose really.

Lord-Jobo··on Kagi Bloopers – Search Results Gone Wrong
If you expect it to be as good as peak google results, no.

If you need something that’s very noticeably better than its competition, then yes.

If you are okay with all of the terrible that comes with using LLM services as a search engine replacement, then probably no.

If you despise the amount of second guessing and source checking required to use LLMs as search tools, then yes.

Somewhat related, Reddit has been broken for me in a very similar way for more than a year now. Whenever I scroll down to load more pages, it will populate with about 80% the same threads as it loaded on previous pages. Over and over, such that by the time I’m on page 6 or so, I will have 6 of the exact same thread.

Really stupid bug that probably only happens with old.Reddit or RES or something. But it’s nice in that it keeps me off of Reddit I guess.

I don’t understand how so many gigantic corporations can focus on cutting costs over and over, firing people until every team is anemic.

Then there’s Firefox, who very clearly just need a slim team focused on performance and maintaining standards.

It’s so interesting to see the explosive fractal of the Internet collapse back into these singularity super apps in different cultures all over the world.

Obviously many in this community see that as a generally bad thing(me included) but the wide audience of none-tech people clearly gravitate very strongly towards it.

I throw it on the pile for evidence of “meaningful friction”, a concept that someone else has definitely already coined: that “some degree of friction or restriction brings positive benefits for things like art or community compared to unlimited easy access. For example very small data limits creating unique art or music in early game bit products.”

Quick research indicates that Jerry Hirshburg has coined it Creative Abrasion and MARTIN WEIGEL has blogged about it, but neither specifically bring the idea to the concept of communities.

I love swimming but it’s incredibly inaccessible for me. I don’t own a pool, the closet public pool is 20 minutes away and doesn’t have lane rental so I can’t consistently do laps, and everything is outdoors so it’s sun poisoning or winter temperatures for most of the year.

Mechanically it’s probably the same as allergy exposure therapy(https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2023/04/08/1168714...), which comes in a lot of varieties including oral/digestion.

It’s effective in a clinical setting and honestly too dangerous to recommend in home settings without several layers of precautions.

But, in theory, highly specialized exposures to particular local allergies would be more effective than most of the clinical studies. And that’s what I would expect is driving the folk remedy.

Worth noting, almost all of the treatments like this are VASTLY more effective when done at younger ages. But they are also even more dangerous. So please speak to an allergist first and don’t do stuff you just read online.

Lord-Jobo··on Majority of teens hold negative views of news media, says report
All true, however almost all of the students respond with interest in becoming influencers (don’t have the survey on hand, it’s been done a few times). And influencers include the TikTok age equivalent of journalists. For better and (definitely) for worse. Some of them are functionally the same, many are far far worse.

The kids just don’t have any interest in big news organizations which is understandable even if it’s going to make things worse.
