Lord-Jobo··on Can the stockmarket swallow Anthropic, SpaceX and OpenAI?
The question is whether or not those industry professionals are speaking in their own interest, in the interest of all stockholders, in the interest of the economy as a whole, or any mix of the above.

This is why non partisan financial institutes like the FED and consumer protection groups like the CPB are important and we should have them as non corrupt and robust as possible.

Because it just doesn’t seem wise to trust asset managers with these kinds of things without a lot of evidence and transparency. The 2008 crisis should have taught all of us that much.

Lord-Jobo··on OpenAI Is Preparing to File for an IPO Soon
Investment and finance in general, at this scale, is far more geopolitics than it is math. It’s self evident.

We’ve all seen how the “math” on so much of the AI business sector literally doesn’t check out, and here there are: still ballooning, still making deals, still directly crafting laws through political influence, still taking over damn near every user space.

Politics at a high enough level lets you play a different game with different rules.

Politics at a low enough level lets you do the same actually, but we usually call that civil unrest, guerrilla warfare, or collective action depending on how many of which group is defying which “rules”.

It’s very easy to get used to the guardrails and guidelines around us when they persist and succeed for decades, but they are much more fragile than they appear.

Lord-Jobo··on “Too dangerous to release” or just too expensive?
Yes, an AI making massive gains in bug finding is hugely important and good, it may even lead to a net neutral with the amount of bugs introduced by other AI coding processes, but it’s a far cry from how mythos is portrayed most of the time: a automatic super hacker.
Lord-Jobo··on Amazon workers under pressure to up their AI usage are making up tasks
Bullshit work has hit escape velocity, won’t be long now before we have huge warehouses filled with people doing sudoku for their daily food allowance, and that’s just how our entire economy functions.

How are we sliding face first into “snowpiercer but dumber”?

Lord-Jobo··on Apple accidentally left Claude.md files Apple Support app
Gueman might be the only leaker in tech who, so far, doesn’t seem to fuck around. Low miss rate, rarely exaggerates. Of course that could change and he could always get insider info that is wrong.
Lord-Jobo··on FBI looks into dead or missing scientists tied to NASA, Blue Origin, SpaceX
The decline in quality of both investigations and information/studies by the FBI over the past year and a half has been extremely noticeable.

This is just not a serious organization anymore, and the lack of such a thing at the federal level leaves us insanely vulnerable to our own criminal operations.

The same thing happened with the IRS even earlier, multiple rounds of intensive they just cannot pursue criminals of a certain type, and the criminals know it. So they can run basically unchecked, looting all of us for billions.

Lord-Jobo··on Claude Code Routines
It really does have some disgusting inline behaviors. I’ve also seen it do some really bizarre stuff with SQL
Lord-Jobo··on Hold on to Your Hardware
If you have to pass the bouncers vibe check to get in, and your dancers have to pay him a 30% tax to work there, do you own the strip club or does the bouncer?
Lord-Jobo··on Hold on to Your Hardware
There will be very dramatic growing pains with this switch, especially for A: nations manufacturing renewables but still running that manufacturing on oil and B: nations that face political and economic barriers for renewables.

Also C: nations that are both A and B, needlessly causing oil volatility with unplanned military dickheadedness.

Lord-Jobo··on Hold on to Your Hardware
Unified hardware helps some and hurts some. See: same gpus for gaming and for AI.
Lord-Jobo··on Nvidia DLSS 5 – AI-Powered Breakthrough in Visual Fidelity for Games [video]
Watching a full video of A and B comparisons shows the massive weaknesses of the tech central to people’s complaints. (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YjvZMbsjEhY) skip to 3:46 and mute. You’ll see in the hogwarts examples, especially the last one with the dark background, that the lighting changes from something ‘logical’ to something nonsensical. In that, the character has multiple points of lighting on their face tied to NOTHING in frame and nothing in the scene. It goes from a dark image to a weird surreal tableau. In the assassins creed example you will see the complete deletion of key shadows, namely the ones cast from clouds moving overhead. This is purely a loss of detail, hard to argue the value for that. In oblivion you’ll see how it makes very bold guesses about textures for people’s faces and uhhh misses pretty bad with the high elf shown. In ALL examples it absolutely blasts contrast and crushes shadows to reduce dynamic range. For scary atmospheric games like resident evil this has a substantial impact on how they feel. In MOST examples, including the headline image of grace from RE9, it’s doing quite a bit more with the input data that simple upscaling. Her lips are a different size and color, her eyes have a different proportions. It’s not normal makeup and lighting changes(makeup alone is very controversial, her written character not wearing makeup literally makes way more sense she is a deeply traumatized antisocial introvert), the sizes of her features are literally different. It’s way more obvious in oblivion with the guy on the docks: his eyes are completely different textures. Looks like a distant relative of the original dude. The reason that last part is a problem even if you think the dlss5 version looks better, is how much impact you are ceding as a developer over to nvidias black box when you enable this. It’s a strong reduction in artistic clarity, from drawing board to people’s displays. And nvidia pushes REALLY hard for developers to use this stuff, at multiple levels. Game devs are artists who do not need even more pressure to sacrifice their art, that’s for sure. And finally, nvidia seems set on this, they are bundling this with their dlss version numbers. But there is nothing else in their dlss suite doing anything like this, in terms of impact. Bundling it is a deceptive tactic, many people like myself enjoy the upscaling even the frame gen sometimes, but would NOT tolerate this effect. If nothing changes, devs are going to be forced to choose between a) old worse upscaling/frame gen or b) newest best version of those, with the ugly “instagram filter” effect.

I am not an AI hater at all, I just like pretty games. And this is an absolutely wild misstep from nvidia. But a fixable one, if this model is tuned way down and retrained not to touch faces the way it does, I can see the appeal.

Lord-Jobo··on Beyond has dropped “meat” from its name and expanded its high-protein drink line
The “easily constrained” people like the person you are responding too don’t understand. I’m not sure they ever will.

Ive also done it the right way, and it was literally easier, by far, to get a masters degree while working 40 hours a week than it was to drop from 250 to 175. Incomparable. The constant mental pressure to eat, to eat more, to search the cabinets, to stop at x on the way home, etc.

I’ve heard “wow sounds like a severe addiction” yeah no shit. It’s an addiction to a substance you MUST have 2-3x a day. Imagine if you needed alcohol twice a day to live.

Lord-Jobo··on 1M context is now generally available for Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6
Context decay is noticeable within 3 messages, nearly every time. Maybe not substantial, but definitely noticeable.

It’s lead to me starting new chats with bigger and bigger starting ‘summary, prompts to catch the model up while refreshing it. Surely there’s a way to automate that technique.

1.8: chat ide the slow way :)

This is also where I do most of my AI use. It’s the safe spot where I’m not going to accidentally send proprietary info to an unknown number of eyeballs(computer or human).

It’s also just cumbersome enough that I’m not relying on it too much and stunting my personal ability growth. But I’m way more novice than most on here.

Lord-Jobo··on Create value for others and don’t worry about the returns
The value-cost ratio is all that matters to a company. Yes, that implies that they are assuming all variations of value are achievable by AI which isn’t true and probably won’t ever be. But they do think that, nearly all of them. Because they don’t understand value. This has been true since the very first corporation. And that’s the problem. They will see a totally cheesed and squeezed metric telling them AI can reach 40% of the value of a “ ___ engineer “ at 10% of the cost and lay off engineers until shit starts exploding. And the stock market will strongly reward that decision.
Lord-Jobo··on The L in "LLM" Stands for Lying
Which I would point out isn’t necessarily hypocrisy on their part.

I can rage against guns and gun manufacturers for their negative effects on our nation and hate when they are used for monstrous evil, but also believe that police should have firearms and that the second amendment is important. It’s a tool. You can hate the way it’s made and marketed, and hate many of its popular use cases, and still think there are acceptable ways to use and market it without requiring a total abolition.

Lord-Jobo··on When employees feel slighted, they work less
Lots of “no shit” in these comments makes me wonder how many VP level managers you guys have interacted with. Maybe it’s just my location, but this is one of those things that legitimately NEVER makes it through to upper managers.

When they tell their base managers to crack the whip and force them to give the whole “you are not working hard enough, tighten up. Shorter lunches, clock in 5 minutes early, etc” speech to the base employees, they will absolutely feel resentment and do LESS work, not more.

For more than one reason.

A quite small few will be pushed over the edge and spend their energy trying to find a new position altogether. But the impact of losing them and having an open position for months will have a huge impact. The impact of losing even a below average worker is nearly always underestimated by uppers who see their 200+ indirects as just numbers on an HR chart. And the employees who hop jobs over bad management are usually in the top half of performance, not bottom.

Another handful of over-achievers will realize that their “extra mile” approach is clearly being ignored or not having any effect, and simply become achievers. This alone can have an impact that outweighs any potential gain from whip cracking.

The one thing that nearly all employees will do when this happens though: talk to each other and bitch about it. This will tank morale yes, but it more literally just takes a bunch of time and energy. A very large distraction from the actual work.

I’ve seen this now at several jobs in a few fields. The negative impact is so much larger than I ever would have guessed starting out.

If you want to get more work out of the same workers, you cannot use negative reinforcement. It will backfire. Positive reinforcement is not bulletproof but rarely makes things WORSE.

Manage smarter not harder.

Lord-Jobo··on Nonviolence
And those mechanisms, the military, the police, and the legal system, rely on violence as the ultimate fallback when other options fail. So you may not be relying on violence to solve your problems, or the threat of violence, or the insinuation of it, but instead relying on the threat of someone ELSE’S violence. That is the social contract pretty fundamentally. And when people can no longer rely on those figures who are supposed to use violence on their behalf, we shouldn’t be surprised that they attempt to reclaim the ability to use force. The social contract has been voided, in their eyes. The premise and promise broken.

In other terms, the most populous, widespread, and consistently available plant-eater makes for an ideal carnivore target.

Long after humans spread out across the stars, maybe the perfect human consuming predator will emerge.

Lord-Jobo··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
The red scare famously effected social groups from the very wealthy to the poorest immigrant. Civil rights before it. Social-political exclusion is not new in the U.S, but how big the “I ignore politics and politics ignores me” group is, is highly variable. In good times, when people are generally happy, political representatives have a fewer differences and the “happily apolitical” group is very large. This aligns with the Clinton-Bush JR era.

The problem is, those eras are uncommon even in the U.S in the broader view of history, and depend entirely on being the right demographic. Such as being a Muslim American in the decade following 9/11. I can assure you, they did not experience the “friends of a different political party” effect at that time.

Lord-Jobo··on Overdose deaths are falling in America because of a 'supply shock': study
If someone is addicted to ice cream, and the most effective treatment is to replace that addiction with spinach(scientifically supported), would anyone have this problem? I doubt it. People’s knee jerk reaction to any kind of “”””drug enabling”””” treatment is infuriating. I know multiple people personally who have had their life saved by methadone. Yes that makes me biased but it also justifies the bias (alongside the many medical professionals advocating for it)
Lord-Jobo··on AWS raises GPU prices 15% on a Saturday, hopes you weren't paying attention
I doubt it’s something we could know without it happening.

US has intel and some other options, but it would be a colossal issue and adjustment.

China has its well funded, fast progressing Chinese chiplets, but it would be a colossal issue and adjustment.

All we can tea leaf is this: which party has a better history of making large fast industrial adjustments, and which economy is more reliant on cutting edge chips? I think china wins on both personally, so I would give them the edge, gun to head. But it’s an extremely messy process for either.

Lord-Jobo··on Building a macOS app to know when my Mac is thermal throttling
Well the MacBook Air has no fans so it’s a different beast from a design perspective. If I recall, at least with an earlier m series MacBook, notably improved performance could be gained by inserting a thermal pad between the chassis’ bottom panel and the compute module. Apple probably didn’t do this in an effort to avoid uncomfortably hot temperatures contacting people’s thighs.
Lord-Jobo··on Last Year on My Mac: Look Back in Disbelief
Looks sloppy in any mode. The amount of wasted space has gone from “well a little bit of rounding/padding is alright to achieve a unified unique look” to “holy shit this is just Fischer price laugh and learn garbage”.

1/2 pixel strips everywhere, around tons of elements. Huge rounded corners. Slow showy animations.

This isn’t a UI for adults, this is a UI for a fake computer sequence in a cheap Netflix movie.

Lord-Jobo··on Quake's Player Speed (2017)
And EFT has gone through some hilarious patches where stamina was very unrealistic. Some things are still very silly.

If you load up too much stuff in your backpack, you go from normal to overweight to tankmode. Overweight penalties are reasonable and progressive from normal weight. Tank mode is not. Walking, at a snails pace, now costs stamina. You cannot recover stamina unless you are standing still. OR, unless you go prone and crawl forwards at roughly the same speed as walking.

Idk if you’ve ever put 25 lbs + in a backpack and prone crawled, but that’s very much the opposite experience In real life. Same with crouch walking not costing any more stamina in the game.
