Loic··on EPA says it will eliminate its scientific research arm
It is more than depressing. During my PhD/Postdoc, we had excellent collaboration with the EPA on stuff which then really improved the life of people in the US. These agencies need to do research to stay ahead of/keep up with the development.

Context: we developed chemicals toxicity prediction models. This was 20 years ago, this allowed the EPA to quality check applications made by chemical companies.

Thank you for the pointers, I will explore them!
Loic··on Show HN: A 'Choose Your Own Adventure' written in Emacs Org Mode
Sorry to hijack a bit the thread. I have been using Emacs for the past 20+ years. Before I could live in Emacs, now, I find it harder (software forced on me by external customers, AI tools, ...).

I try everywhere I can to install an Emacs mode for code/text navigation. But they tend to be inconsistent and for some software, it is simply not possible.

Do you have good resources to help there (running Linux/Gnome)? Do you keep the faith or switched "out"?

Loic··on Apple vs the Law
Same experience, from startup to large multinational EU companies.

The biggest headaches/issues are normally local regulations (country specific or even more local). The EU directives are more frameworks with a lot of flexibility and well grounded on common sense + expertise. How the different countries implement them in their own laws (with their own historical laws) is a different story.

Loic··on Solar power has begun to transform the world’s energy system
From a geopolitical point of view, if we increase solar/renewable, we decrease dependencies on fossil fuels. As fossil fuels are traded in USD, we decrease our needs of USD, so we decrease the value of the USD.

Isn't it what the current US administration want? A weak USD to boost export?

Loic··on LLM code generation may lead to an erosion of trust
I am asking my team to flag git commits with a lot of LLM/Agent use with something like:

[ai]: rewrote the documentation ...

This is helps us to put another set of "glasses" as we later review the code.

Loic··on David Attenborough at 99: 'I will not see how the story ends'
You had this nice story about unusual "boulders" to prevent trawling.

Loic··on Denmark to raise retirement age to 70
I fundamentally agree with your comment. But for Denmark, it is very difficult to learn Danish. I lived there 3 years, took courses and was at end able to do my daily stuff in English, but a part of the society simply does not want a foreigner to speak Danish. You are forced to use English.

My girlfriend asked me once in a Restaurant (Cafe Norden in Kopenhagen) why I was ordering in English. Then, I spent the complete evening ordering everything in Danish, to always receive answers in English. And this nearly everywhere (not my bakery, the girls there could not speak a word of English, this was an exception). This was in the early 2000's. This never happened to me in all the other countries I have been living in. A Danish colleague simply told me that he does not like to listen to broken Danish, better switch to English.

Still have a lot of friends in Denmark, integration there is not easy, even for highly qualified people from the EU.

Loic··on What do wealthy people buy, that ordinary people know nothing about? (2015)
It makes sense, in Europe, German people are the ones spending the most in kitchen hardware (both appliances and furniture). So naturally, companies have been serving this market. Anecdote, high end Miele appliances have been running Linux for a couple of years.
Loic··on What do wealthy people buy, that ordinary people know nothing about? (2015)
Yes, but they keep a series without these "cloud" (dis)functions.
Loic··on What do wealthy people buy, that ordinary people know nothing about? (2015)
We are all Miele at home and for the next renewal, I will go to Bosch/Siemens. Too many small failures here and there (less than 8 year old). I was sincerely surprised because 20 years ago, Miele was the gold standard (at least in Germany). So, I agree with you.
Loic··on Scraperr – A Self Hosted Webscraper
Not necessarily, I have a website with 95% (maybe even more) of the traffic generated by crawlers. If some of them are behaving badly, it is fair to exclude them with my robots.txt.

But of course, the ones behaving badly tend to not respect the robots.txt, so you end up banning the IP or IP block.

And here, I am a nice guy, the crawler must really be a piece of crap for me to start to block.

Loic··on A flat pricing subscription for Claude Code
I am using cline, it plans with Haiku and execute with Sonnet. It works well.

You need to drive and fine tune a Ferrari because it feeds your family. The OP just drive a nice little car, because it is fun to drive and he enjoys it. He could extract another +5% of torque by fine tuning, but he does not care, this is not where his joy is and where he wants to spend his time.
Loic··on Static as a Server
With Moveable Type we even generated .php files with prerendered content in it from the database and using the PHP part of it to add server side dynamic functionalities. This was a very nice balance between a static and a fully dynamic website.
Loic··on A flat pricing subscription for Claude Code
Right into the announcement, later down, they even explain how to handle the limits:

How Rate Limits Work: With the Max plan, your usage limits are shared across both Claude and Claude Code:

Shared rate limits: All activity in both Claude and Claude Code counts against the same usage limits.

Message variations: The number of messages you can send on Claude varies based on message length, conversation length, and file attachments.

Coding usage variations: Expected usage for Claude Code will vary based on project complexity, codebase size, and auto-accept settings.

On the Max plan (5x Pro/$100), average users:

- Send approximately 225 messages with Claude every 5 hours, OR

- Send approximately 50-200 prompts with Claude Code every 5 hours

On the Max plan (20x Pro/$200), average users:

- Send approximately 900 messages with Claude every 5 hours, OR

- Send approximately 200-800 prompts with Claude Code every 5 hours

Loic··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (April 2025)
Need to renovate an old house, built in the 50's, extended later in the 60's, 90's and 2000's. I want to calculate the heat loss, energy requirements to install a heat pump. So, I am writing a relatively simple Python program to compute the heat requirements (max total and max per room) to get the possible energy savings if changing windows, isolating etc.

By doing the calculations myself, I can play with different scenarios, I can also integrate the effect on the material quality uncertainty. Nothing fancy, but it fits my needs.

Loic··on Wikipedia’s nonprofit status questioned by D.C. U.S. attorney
Thank you.

More and more, especially in engineering, I am in contact with people who just want everything to be easy to understand in TikTok length video clips or short posts.

Some things are hard to understand, dynamic systems especially, black or white answers do not exist.

(Sorry for the slightly off-topic/meta rant. This hit a nerve by me.)

Loic··on Don't force your kids to do math
The current trend, at least in Germany, is that as soon as a kid says "I do not want anymore.", this is normal to stop. With that, the kids do not have the experience that it can be hard, but going through can bring something.

Resilience, capacity to go through ups and downs, etc. are things you train by being exposed to it. If your life is only fun and joy as kid, the day you are hit hard as an adult, you have no training.

But, this is my very personal point of view, education is very personal and very context specific, every family is different (country, culture, education, etc.) and in every family education is difficult from one kid to another. I am not trying to tell you how to educate your kids.

Loic··on Don't force your kids to do math
But kids are going to have setbacks, they will reach a plateau in their craft (music, painting, art, sport, ...). You need also as a good parent to help your kids go through, to not give up, because even joy to do is not always enough. This is the hard part.

From my modest experience of being a ski/snowboard instructor and trying to raise 3 boys (now 12, 16 and 18).

Loic··on Discord's face scanning age checks 'start of a bigger shift'
I suppose you do not have children. I am open-minded, mid 40's. The level of violence in porn you can get access to with just one click, has no comparison with what I could get access to as a kid (basically nothing).

With the net, you get access in one click to the worse and the best. It is a lot of work as a parent to educate the kids about that.

As kids, teenager and even as 20 something, if we wanted to do some experience, we had to physically access the media or be physically present. This was not on-demand over a screen.

So, I filter the access at home while also trying my best to educate. This is not easy and I can understand that non tech savvy people request more laws, even so I am personally against.

The article is pretty well balanced, we have no silver bullet here.

Loic··on Some Reflections After a Month of Tracking My Own Online Activity
Thanks a lot for this comprehensive answer. I have a Garmin watch, maybe there is an app for it too.

As a developer, the balance between using a readymade solution or implementing is always a bit tipped on the DIY side.

Loic··on Some Reflections After a Month of Tracking My Own Online Activity
May I ask what you are using to track your time?

Late edit: Especially offline time tracking.

Loic··on Signal Chat Leak Angers U.S. Military Pilots
For me, the best part of the article, this applies in so many places in life. And of course, I am guilty too.

“The whole point about aviation safety is that you have to have the humility to understand that you are imperfect, because everybody screws up. Everybody makes mistakes,” said Lt. John Gadzinski, a retired Navy F-14 pilot who flew combat missions from aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf. “But ultimately, if you can’t admit when you’re wrong, you’re going to kill somebody because your ego is too big.”

Loic··on Tracing the thoughts of a large language model
For us, the NN is used in a grey box model for MPC in chemical engineering. The factories we control have relatively long characteristic time, together with all the engineering bounds, we can use the NN to model parts of the equipment from raw DCS data. The NN modeled parts are usually not the most critical (we are 1st principles based for them) but this allows us to quickly fit/deploy a new MPC in production.

Faster time to market/production is for us the main reason/advantage of the approach.

Loic··on Tracing the thoughts of a large language model
It is not old school, this is my daily job and we need even more of it with the NN models used in MPC.
Loic··on When your last name is Null, nothing works
I have an apostrophe too and it broke many websites. It was also a natural source of SQL injection detection.

About 20 years ago, I was able to see a bit more than what I supposed to from the Ikea website. Nowadays, I see mostly encoding issues, especially in notification pop-ups.

I had the word "Verniedlichung" in mind, of course this is also not the right term, but as I been living outside of France for the past 25 years, switching daily between French, German and English, I am sometimes "stuck" and can't get the right word out. And this in whatever language I am thinking at the moment.

I now accept that I am losing my French while not being really fluent in any other language.
