>it's absurd to think an average person would want to do that

Hate to break it to you but the average person does not wake up and think "you know what I want to do for the next 40 years? look at code for 8 hours a day." Wanting to do this is a weird thing (and that's okay) and it means you have different desires than my mom who likes watching youtube on her iphone.

The web browser just doesn't matter if you care about the operating system code that it relies on. Without unlocked devices you don't have the freedom to code what you want to code. If I'm using a phone that sends my pics to the cops and advertising companies I don't really care about playing with MVC frameworks. Do you want the freedom to code whatever you want to code or do you just want to play in Microsoft's kiddie pool?

>Why would you need root access and unlockable devices to produce code ?

Because without this your projects are always at the mercy of Microsoft's auto update. There's more to life than MVC frameworks. Some people want to be in control of their data. On, say, LineageOS you can rewrite system apps; on iOS your phone will always be a cop and you can't change that.

Off topic, but I couldn't help but ask after checking out your site: do you have any advice for someone wanting to learn more about explainable graph artificial intelligence?

It depends on if the Chinese/Russian/Israel troll farms are working that day.

There's a simpler answer here. There's no money to be made by accusing the US. They just don't care about security.

So after converting from Musk time to human time, this means it'll take 5 years?

This is the expectation, and the reality is that the government still uses Windows XP. Stealth tech and other military signature detection/evasion techs are probably just exceptional.
LogonType10··on The U.S. Treasury is buying private app data to target and investigate people
Yes, exactly. There are differences between confidentiality, privacy, and anonymity. It's a Venn diagram. Using effective crypto and self-hosted services gets you confidentiality of your data, but not necessarily anonymity if your hardware, accounts, and payments are tied to your name.

Try it at your local store, and if they ask, tell them that you don't have an ID card because your wallet got stolen last week. Be a little adventurous.

>where you will also not be recorded on CCTV doing so

This begs the question on whether you are trying to avoid automated surveillance and correlation or whether you are trying to out-do Usama bin Laden at competitive hide and seek. The more important question is: how long is that CCTV data stored for?

So if the FBI can arrest them, they're criminals and we should follow criminal procedure, but if the FBI says they can't arrest them, then we "take action" (what action)?

Mint mobile. Buy the SIM card with cash.

People say they want privacy, but people say a lot of things they don't mean. Instead I look at their actions. No one's willing to inconvenience themselves even slightly for privacy.

What about when Russian hackers shut down American hospitals and can't be extradited? Who's going to hack back and enforce the law? The FBI can't do it.

>No company should ever spend more mitigating a risk than the potential cost they could incur from the risk.

I've heard hospital administrators make this argument after I've warned them about their security infrastructure being vulnerable to ransomware. I'm not convinced.

The fact that we were allowed to discuss and protest this "special attention" shows that we are a far, far ways away from China's Social Credit system.

Most startups don't have a ton of data you can encrypt and chokehold them with. If hospitals don't have their medical records then people die. If your startup has to reimage all its laptops and redeploy its application code from github then it's a lost weekend.

Despite what narcissistic Zero-to-Oners would tell you, their startups aren't important in the grand scheme of things. Nation states are hacking intelligence agencies, governments, established IT vendors (not startups), power grids, and hospitals in that rough order. Ransomware gangs are hacking companies that have real money right now, not lottery tickets pre-IPO. These companies can afford good cybersecurity but don't want to spend more money than the damages they would incur from a successful attack.
