LockAndLol··on GoboLinux
From the FAQ

> Is GoboLinux "ready"?

> Yes, it is ready in the sense that you can, today, have a full operating system running 100% on GoboLinux, like many people around the world do.

> Note, however, that it is neither a beginner-oriented distribution, or an end-user binary-oriented distribution like Ubuntu. To use GoboLinux today, the user is expected to be proficient with the command-line and willing to compile and configure their software.

Yeah, nah. I recently watched a streamer try to compile some nvidia stuff for CUDA in order to use her DSLR camera at >18fps. A very nice reminder that it's never "just ./configure && sudo make install".

Especially uninstalling stuff installed that way is a horrible pain. I used to create .deb's from it, but boy am I glad those days are over.

Besides that, the motivation and sane folder names seem great.

LockAndLol··on Prosperity comes at 'devastating' cost to nature
That's shortsighted. Humanity will run off the proverbial cliff if that sentiment stays.

Sure, you might not suffer now, but at this point, probably your kids and/or grandkids will. If you don't have nor want kids, then you'll be hurting your friends' and relatives' kids.

If you really don't care, well ain't nothing that can be said to convince you otherwise unless you feel the actual effects.

LockAndLol··on Apple watch keyboard developer put off by app store scammers
Apple users will defend its behavior to the bitter. No matter what you post about Apple, it will either be excused or praised.

Does anybody know of a firefox addon or monkeyscript to filter articles on Hackernews? At this point I just want to hide any article with "M1" or "Apple" in it.

LockAndLol··on Why Google needs to build an open chat client like Elemen
Google doesn't have to do anything. WE need to do something and stop relying on multinationals for so many things.
LockAndLol··on Global Inequality
By now probably most people are aware of these facts to some degree (not with exact numbers but an inkling). The problem is what to do with that information. So, a question to the rest of HN what are you doing to reduce wealth and income inequality?

Me? I'm voting for parties that want to tax the rich+wealthy (people and enterprises) for money coming in and out of the country (or the EU).

Further, I try my hardest not to buy from the biggest offenders nor to use their products: Apple, Google, Nestle, Facebook, Amazon, McDonalds, Samsung, LG, etc. I try to buy local products and order from local, national or intra-EU companies. Second-hand or refurbished too.

And of course consumption in general is low: goods, energy, water are restricted to the necessary. There aren't many things in my dwelling that I don't need or don't use.

It's not always possible, but an attempt is being made.

LockAndLol··on Element (Matrix chat app) suspended from the Google Play Store
Everything is open-source. They block what they want and you can fork it or recompile it. You don't have that same liberty with Google, the Apple Store, Amazon, Samsung, etc.

On the store that you host you can also choose to enforce whichever rules you like.

Plus, they were talking about Gab there. If you think you're going to write the next Gab or... Pander or Flander or whatever that website was that allowed people to plan storming the US capital, then you can still have your own store.

What @throwaway525142 said and you can host your own repo.
LockAndLol··on Apple Silicon M1 supports “billion of colors” a.k.a. HDR 10-bit output
That wouldn't surprise me. If we couldn't tell them apart.

There must also be limits to perception or resolution. Are our eyes even able to tell the difference between FHD, 2K and 4K on a 15" screen?

I tested FHD vs 4K on a 31" screen and could not are a difference when watching a 10 minute video (I had 2 screens side by side for reference).

On a semi related note. I also tried watching 60fps videos at 60Hz vs 144Hz (again side by side) to test out my new screen. No difference. Even fast moving things.

I really feel like either I just don't perceive these things and it'll keep more money in my wallet, or that I'm not alone and everybody can save money. A chart of when differences actually become perceptible would be great. It wouldn't surprise me I'd the threshold for 4K were 42", 10bit only in grays and fps at a certain pixel per second movement speed.

Or they make F-Droid more known. Publishing apks yourself means you have to implement an update feature. F-Droid takes care of that
LockAndLol··on Losing faith in UX
I remember reading or hearing somewhere: we have some of our smartest people working on the best way to sell ads to people.

On an unrelated note, I like the style of the blog: no 3 column bullshit. I can resize the screen however I want to and the text flows all the way from the left edge of the screen to the right edge. Barely any wasted space.

Beautiful.

LockAndLol··on PyO3: Rust Bindings for the Python Interpreter
Thanks for the response. That does sound pretty much like what I would like to do. Have you by any chance open-sourced your project?

I'm new to rust, but I'll check out Rocket. Cheers

LockAndLol··on PyO3: Rust Bindings for the Python Interpreter
It would minimize the python surface required to be covered with type-hints and mypy. If possible, one could simply point django to the modules generated from rust.

I'll give it a shot tonight and see how it goes. Now I'm curious.

LockAndLol··on Businesses should try to be the best, not the biggest
We can but we don't. Our biological drive, coupled with our lack of volition to reason about it, is to reproduce. Most people don't care if pumping out a unit is the worst thing contribution to the planet's environment, they'll do it just because.
LockAndLol··on PyO3: Rust Bindings for the Python Interpreter
If this works well, I'd rather use this over being forced to use type hints and mypy.

Has anybody used this in conjunction with a python framework? Django, fastapi or something?

LockAndLol··on Coinbase announces proposed direct listing
What does this mean for people investing small amounts (~1k) in crypto with Coinbase?

Is there additional risk (beyond crypto prices dropping) like Coinbase deciding to simply close accounts in order to get funds in times of trouble due to the stock market acting up?

Would private wallets become more advisable?

LockAndLol··on Discord bans r/WallStreetBets server, subreddit went private for a while
They can host their own matrix server... It's not that hard. Then they won't have to whine about deplatforming. When will they learn? Companies aren't your friends: the bottom line is.

If they wanted to have an anonymous server, they could host it on I2P and provide instructions on how to connect.

LockAndLol··on Berty: Peer-to-peer messaging app that works with or without internet access
I know people like harking on about phone number or email requirements, but how am I supposed to find my friends? Do I have to send them a message over Signal to tell them the name I picked on another app?

LockAndLol··on What's the deal with Chromium on Linux? Google at odds with package maintainers
I'm pretty in the dark here since I don't have a google account, but what are these private APIs they're talking about? Is Google Sync the equivalent of Firefox Sync? If that doesn't work, but the actual browsing works, what's the big deal?

People should still be able to build Chromium and their Electron apps. It's not clear to me what people are getting worked up about... what am I missing?

Apologies.

You're taking one single phrase out of context and getting bent out of shape.

Just assume the people you're writing to aren't all idiots. If you really think OP meant what you thought, ask them.

LockAndLol··on I tried to report scientific misconduct. How did it go?
How are we, the laymen, supposed to trust published, peer-reviewed papers? They seem to be just a bunch of words now with little meaning.

Before, I used to consider scientific papers... well, scientific and would try to base an informed opinion on the abstracts and conclusions. After reading blog entries like these and actually reading some papers (especially soft science papers which are easier to understand), even as a layman, some glaring mistakes can be spotted.

Popular scientists like Dawkins and that black astronomer are happy to point out the glaring problems in other areas of life, but it's looking more and more like the scientific field doesn't have its shit together either.

On a scale of bullshit to trustworthy, where stuff like Breitbart and ThePinkNews live in swamps of bullshit, scientific publications and papers seem to barely reach "believable". One always has to question "who payed for this research", "who reviewed it", "which country is this from", "what reasons could there have been to do this research", "are these results too good to be true", "who would benefits from these results", etc.

It seems like one really cannot trust anybody or anything and has to constantly keep their wits about themselves.

Will we ever be able to clean up our act? What can we do?

LockAndLol··on Split keyboards and how to build them
As a software developer, I'm pretty lost when it comes to circuits, soldering, etc. I can mix and match parts for my PC and not fuck up, but building hardware from scratch is something totally new to me.

Are there any European stores that sell the kits or parts to build these keyboards? I've had pretty bad experiences buying stuff from outside the EU. If something is faulty, broken, etc., you're pretty much SOL, while in the EU you can return it and get your money back.

LockAndLol··on Right to Repair off to the races in 2021 with 14 active states
Steve Jobs is rolling in his grave. After working so hard to make repairing Apple devices a pain... and all that work is being undone.

Do these laws take everything repairable into consideration? Last I read, farmers were getting bent over by their farming equipment makers.
