LockAndLol··on Food Prices Are Soaring Faster Than Inflation and Incomes
Maybe if we didn't throw up to 50% of our food away in "developed nations" there'd be:

A. More left for the rest

B. No need to produce the amount produced right now

C. Reduced impact on the environment

But yeah, let's think about that ,once we do actually have a crisis, as a last resort. Keep stuffing your bins with food you didn't eat and wondering why prices soar.

LockAndLol··on Four times I felt discriminated against for being a female developer
This is the kind of thing I think of when people talk a out meritocracy. Somehow social studies have warped the perception of meritocracy to mean "anti my group" by selecting examples that aren't meritocratic.

Just look up "meritocracy dead" on a search engine of your choice. It's pretty minds boggling what people want to replace the goal of meritocracy with these days.

LockAndLol··on “ISO obstructs adoption of standards by paywalling them”
Is there going to be a scihub for specs? Spechub? This seems to be the build IP towards that.
LockAndLol··on Popular YouTubers who are building their own sites
Are there opensource product/apps/website that allow distributing media to multiple outlets at once? Like uploading to YouTube, peertube, daily motion, vimeo and others from one interface as well as managing and responding to the comments left on them?

I could develop something myself but it would be way better if someone already put the effort into it. Also because I suck at UI and would probably wrote a CLI for it, which probably doesn't mesh with content creators.

LockAndLol··on 100Mbps uploads and downloads should be US broadband standard, senators say
> 100Mbps download so that multiple people can simultaneously stream 4k video is not a sane default.

It is if you don't want to update the minimum every 5 years. 100 isn't even high enough, IMO. It should be at least 500 down and at least 100 up to be safe for another decade, maybe 2.

If the pandemic has shown most of the world anything, it's that people need internet with high speeds. With the increasing gap between rich and poor, there are more people in flat shares too (per flat and total flat shares). Houses are bought later, if at all.

LockAndLol··on M1 MacBook Air hits 900 GFlops in the browser with Safari's experimental WebGPU
So much for an "amazing M1". So it's as performant as a chip that was in a phone released a year prior.
LockAndLol··on Signal Desktop is corrupting its database
What kind of a question is that? Are you a developer?

Do you think developers willingly write bugs into their applications, then simply release them hoping they can mess up somebody's day for the fun of it?

"Allowed to roll out into production" as if there's a manager looking at the list of newly created bugs, grinning and going "This bug... I like this bug! Roll it out!"

LockAndLol··on Researchers find stem cells for hair regeneration
Are the barber shops allowed to operate where those people live? Are people allowed to travel all the way to whoever used to cut their hair?

Shaving it all away is easy.

LockAndLol··on Indian Government Breached, Massive Amount of Critical Vulnerabilities
> Unfortunately, what seemed like a done deal turned out to be quite the unprofessional ride. Any organization knows that fixing breach-worthy vulnerabilities is extremely time sensitive. Once threat actors catch wind of major vulnerabilities against an organization they begin poking on their own, looking for more vectors of attack.

Do you expect them to tell everybody exactly which systems are vulnerable? What is it you're suggesting they do?

LockAndLol··on Adversarial.io – Fighting mass image recognition
> At a mile high conceptual level, AI is nothing but a program created by a computer based on the data it is provided

Your brain is but a preprogrammed, biological computer that reacts to data obtained from its interfaces and attach peripherals.

LockAndLol··on Adversarial.io – Fighting mass image recognition
If it's opensource, there's no need to wait on the business interests of a trillion dollar company to align with your wishes. Camera app developers can be made aware of it and add it to their apps. If there are app developers on HN, they can create pull requests to their favorite apps and add the feature.

That's the power of opensource.

LockAndLol··on M1 Macs have another hidden boot mode
> What you then get is every bit as good as regular 1TR, with one significant exception: you can’t set the system security state using the Startup Security Utility. Apple explains that this is because “LLB [Low-Level Bootloader] doesn’t lock an indication into the Boot Progress Register saying it is going into recoveryOS”. But for all other purposes, this is just as good as 1TR, and is identical.

What does this mean? Do you have more rights than you usually would, less rights, or the same?

I'd rather see them bailed out than some greedy trader on wall street or a banker.
LockAndLol··on Tauri: An Electron alternative written in Rust
From what I understand the internals (aka the engine). That is a problem IMO. I understand it's to create a dependency on the maintainer in order to make money, but yeah... it's the reason I've stayed away thus far.

LockAndLol··on Lithuania plans to hold drills in case of accident at the Belarus nuclear plant
Is this being done in other places close to nuclear plants? The article just mentions that there are allegations of security standards not being followed but who was making the accusations and why?

And why are the Baltic states pulling out of the Belorussian energy network?

I find the article pretty sparse on details.

LockAndLol··on Do Adults Really Not Remember School Sucked?
No kids here (besides the neighbors kids) thankfully, but I don't need them to remember how much I hated school and university. They were all about knowledge with no understanding.

The entire goal of school is not to "prepare you for life" but to fit you into a box, any box, with a bow for your employer. Nobody that I applied to ever asked me about my degree or university experience; it was but a qualifier on the CV.

As the author said, probably the only thing my peers remembered positively from their school days was their social circles. That's probably the biggest reason school was bearable.

Hopefully the pandemic will change things, but its doubtful. There are universities that still, after a whole year of covid, haven't figured out remote teaching. They can't use or agree upon software, don't know how to do the exams, can't organize schedules and keep reverting to proctoring solutions that invade privacy.

How can institutions, that are supposed to prepare us for the future, be so backwards?

Whatever language you're using, someone hates. Just be aware of that. There is no perfect language that fits every situation and there is no perfect community.

Know your needs and which language fits your needs.

LockAndLol··on Kenyan recycles plastic waste into bricks stronger than concrete
> What is it about this one that brings out HN's inner environmentalist?

This is obvious and very easy to see, while the other examples you brought up aren't. Your examples might even be doing more damage, but because the end result is shiny, people are distracted.

Plus, I'm sure there's a part of first world vs third world prejudice: "she's probably uneducated and doesn't know what she's doing, plus her accent sounds that way".

LockAndLol··on 90-year-old man spends $10k on 2 ads in WSJ to tell AT&T CEO about slow internet
Italy needs the same investment in propaganda/marketing as the US; every European country does. People dream about going to the US because they are bombarded with the image that it's better there, not of how good it is in neighboring countries or on the same continent.
LockAndLol··on 90-year-old man spends $10k on 2 ads in WSJ to tell AT&T CEO about slow internet
Future proofing and it gives people the possibility to think big. If most of the country is stuck at 20 Mb, then most people will think in and build 20Mb applications.

Who knows what people will cook up if they are unbridled. Of course limiting users also breeds innovation to overcome the limitations (youtube-dl is a good example), but artificially creating limitations for the sake of money, isn't a good argument IMO.

If you want applications for the future, don't limit it.

Does it continue learning? It might be good to somehow federalize it in order for instances to share knowledge or results.

Were its current knowledge to stay static, I imagine it would become outdated in some time. But most importantly, it wouldn't correct mistakes

LockAndLol··on Big name corporations more likely to commit fraud: study
Because you (the people) don't vote for people who actually want to prosecute white-collar criminals. That probably comes from it not being so relatable. Most people understand physical theft and probably think it's easier to catch those thieves.

Sure, a big part of the problem is white-collar crooks working in industries that possess a lot of power to manipulate the world we live in, but we can't just absolve ourselves of responsibility. If you think it's a problem, find the most impactful ways you can help resolve it. Simply talking about it and convincing yourself that "you made more people aware of it" is not very impactful if that's all you're doing.

LockAndLol··on NYT reporter Donald McNeil Jr ousted after using n-word with students
> “I was asked at a dinner by a student whether I thought a classmate of hers should have been suspended for a video she had made as a 12-year-old in which she used a racial slur. To understand what was in the video, I asked if she had called someone else the slur or whether she was rapping or quoting a book title. In asking the question, I used the slur itself,”

Really...fired for that? Ridiculous. It's as if people can't understand context, intent and probably intonation.

Why don't they start demanding for researchers who study uses of insults to be fired because "racial slurs can't be used anywhere regardless of context"? That the problem with absolutes, if you were to enforce them " literally every single time" a lot would go wrong and certain things would become impossible.

What a joke that paper is

LockAndLol··on Property-Based Testing in Python
I honestly don't find tests that "self documenting". They are complementary and optional to reference documentation, but much less readable. Every time I've looked at them, I've found myself better grasping what the function does by simply reading the function itself.

And having to read regexes in order to understand code seems more like a negative. In that regard pytest and simple unittest code reads more easily IMO.

The most readable test code I've come across is that written in jasmine (behavioural driven testing)

LockAndLol··on A Framework for Writing Better Documentation
I'll try this out, thanks. Never gave it real thought and have always tried to somehow organize my documentation. Maybe this will get it right.
