LispSporks22··on Why is Common Lisp not the most popular programming language?
I don’t think you know Common Lisp very well, or are talking about some super limited Lisp dialect I’ve never heard of.
LispSporks22··on BMW I3 Owner Confronted with $71,000 Bill to Replace EV Battery
I hope the growing EV market doesn’t develop throw away tendencies. Imagine a car, but quickly obsolete like an Android phone
LispSporks22··on ZX – A tool for writing better scripts
Bit verbose for me with all that promise/await stuff. Substitution rules probably simpler tho
LispSporks22··on Almost every infrastructure decision I endorse or regret
I agree. I’m afraid I’m one of those 00s developers and can relate. Back then many startups were being launched on super simple stacks.

With all of that complexity/word salad from TFA, where’s the value delivered? Presumably there’s a product somewhere under all that infrastructure, but damn, what’s left to spend on it after all the infrastructure variable costs?

I get it’s a list of preferences, but still once you’ve got your selection that’s still a ton of crap to pay for and deal with.

Do we ever seek simplicity in software engineering products?

LispSporks22··on Almost every infrastructure decision I endorse or regret
I feel like this is overkill for a startup.

Why not dump your application server and dependencies into rented data center (or EC2 if you must) and setup a coarse DR? Maybe start with a monolith in PHP or Rails.

None of that word salad sounds like startup to me, but then again everyone loves to refer to themselves as a startup (must be a recruiting tool?), so perhaps muh dude is spot on.

LispSporks22··on Almost every infrastructure decision I endorse or regret
Can any of your engineers run the product locally and iterate fast?
LispSporks22··on 2024 Kawasaki Ninja 7 hybrid motorcycle first ride review
Lot of focus on mpg here. I couldn’t even tell you what the mpg on any of my 3 bikes is. It’s so unimportant to most riders.

Most interesting to me is the Ninja 7 smoking a zx10r, for a few hundred feet off the line, granted. Picture of exciting shit to come perhaps.

“You’ll own nothing and you’ll be happy”
LispSporks22··on Rolling Airframe Missile
I don’t think these systems will work against cheap, tiny drones or swarms of drones. eg. Russian ships vs Ukrainian boat drones.
LispSporks22··on Write code for the web
> One would think that of all the leetcode certified staff…

I’m sure they left shortly after finding out all they’ll actually be doing is putting fields in structs and waiting on CI/CD to see if it worked.

LispSporks22··on Significant features introduced for recent versions of Perl
If Perl6 hadn’t killed Perl, would we still see it in use today?
LispSporks22··on Apple declares last MacBook Pro with an optical drive obsolete
Hope they're not gonna kill my Mid 2015 MBP anytime soon. With Open Core Patcher, it's still running the latest macOS.
LispSporks22··on Google search drops cache link from search results
Matter of time before “powered by Bing” appears at the bottom.
LispSporks22··on A Tour of the Lisps
I know of one company that dumped its clojure code base because lambda costs were too high. They even experimented with graal as a fix.
LispSporks22··on California Bill Wants to Mandate Electronic 'Speed Limiters' in Cars
IIRC, bikes are limited to 187 mph via inter manufacturer agreement. See? Private sector self-regulation works great for this. No need to legislate.
LispSporks22··on Windows 11 Design Mistakes
I bought an expensive PC just to play my stupid my 3D Steam games. Windows 11 is barely even fit for that now. Even installing it wants my email. Why?? Can’t get a vertical task bar like I used to (have they even seen monitor screen dimensions since 2000?)

Then that dude from Microsoft comes out on HN and says they don’t even care to improve it/can’t improve it because of project manager career aspirations. Makes total sense. I guess they’re gonna profit from Teams or some shit instead of windows.

I suspect it’s just a matter of time before they just rebase on top of Linux. Never thought it’d see that.

LispSporks22··on Are we at peak vector database?
I believe you've reached peak anything when it's been incorporated into PostgreSQL.
LispSporks22··on Surveillance-by-Design in Proposed Amendments to the UK Investigatory Powers Act
Is there a name for efforts that are terrible and often defeated, but are basically inevitable due to just wearing down its opponents over time?
LispSporks22··on Surveillance-by-Design in Proposed Amendments to the UK Investigatory Powers Act
I think the UK kinda just needs to build its own “internet” like China does. Apps for UK people to get spied and surveilled upon and generally “kept in line”. Also maybe a courtesy firewall so they don’t feel completely left out.
LispSporks22··on Running Open Genera 2.0 on Linux
I love building software from within the system that runs it. I really hate the edit compile run/ maybe debug cycles of popular, “modern” software development.
LispSporks22··on Databases and why their complexity is now unnecessary
What’s micro batch streaming?
LispSporks22··on Fortran vs Python: The counter-intuitive rise of Python in scientific computing (2020)
Like just about any technology in our industry, people use it because it’s popular. Competitive advantage be damned - just use what your competitors use.
LispSporks22··on Google illegally refusing to bargain with employee union, says NLRB
> Google, however, stands fast to the position that those Cognizant employees might work at Google, but not for it.

That’s a good one

LispSporks22··on Go: What we got right, what we got wrong
As I recall the Go GC is a primitive 70s design as well. No idea if it still is.
LispSporks22··on Go: What we got right, what we got wrong
Who is Ruth?
LispSporks22··on Terminal Smooth Scrolling
I remember writing my own smooth scrolling file viewer on DOS. You could use the character registers for the display controller (think it was VGA, 80x25 mode).

Not novel, but fun way to get more resolution than you have but for narrow use cases.

LispSporks22··on Did I destroy my friend's TV with a magnet? (2022)
I permanently damaged my family’s tv with a car loud speaker I was playing with as kid. It left a big blemish, colored shadow shape and since we were kinda poor (didn’t know at the time), we lived with it for ages… oh the guilt!

Was fun to understand the election beam was being deflected a magnetic field at the time tho

LispSporks22··on Niklaus Wirth has died
Sound’s nifty. Did this take advantage of those Intel (maybe others?) STM opcodes? For a while I was stoked on CL-STMX which did (as well as implementing non-native version to the same interface)
