LichenStone··on A FOSS proposal for a new type of OS for a new type of computer (2021)
This reminds me of some Bret Victor talks.
LichenStone··on Ken and Roberta Williams Working on Colossal Cave Adventure Remake for VR and PC
I really hope they make use of the Steam Audio API in the game, which can simulate sound reflections, occlusion, reverb, and HRTF directional positioning to the listener for sound sources. Would make a ton of sense for a cave environment.
LichenStone··on In Praise of Memorization
> “An overly precise memory is maybe not really what we want in the long term, because it prevents us from using our memories to generalize them to new situations,” she said in San Diego at a recent meeting of the Society for Neuroscience. “If our memories are too precise and overfitted, then we can’t actually use them to … make predictions about future situations.”

LichenStone··on When the Emperor Is a Void (2020)
The first paragraph on the facism Wikipedia page seems like a decent working definition. It's always a shame when people use such important terms thoughtlessly or in bad faith, integrity in the meanings of things seems like an important part of a healthy civilisation.
LichenStone··on How I learned to stop worrying and structure all writing as a list
I tend to write in a very non-linear fashion, I'll often write individual sentences and paragraphs in a different order to the final product, as I think of them. Then I fill in the gaps, move things around until the writing forms a linear grammatical representation of the pure thought structure of the idea that existed in my brain.
LichenStone··on Silencing the Kinesis Advantage 2
Do you mean 'chattering'? Double presses can happen with electrical contact mechanism switches, particularly if they are old or dirty.
LichenStone··on Vladimir Putin is pushing Russia into past: Maybe a generation, maybe a century
Article scheduled to be published 2 days after the start of the invasion, was promptly removed when it became clear the 'special operation' wasn't going to plan - http://web.archive.org/web/20220226051154/https://ria.ru/202... Translation - https://pastebin.com/rWEqsGe2

LichenStone··on Ask HN: What do Russians on HN think about this war?
This is an interesting source, thank you.
LichenStone··on Alan Kay: A Conversation with CMU Faculty and Students (2007) [video]
Someone who's thoughts I've been listening to for some time now is the cognitive scientist and AI researcher Joscha Bach. As far as I'm concerned he has the best model of our consciousness, life, the universe and maybe everything that I've come across. I've honestly been trying to find something substantial of his that I disagree with and I've come up short. His first Lex Fridman interview is a good start, and there's plenty of more technical talks out there too.

There's also Bret Victor who's "The Humane Representation of Thought" talk is one of my all time favourites. He hasn't seemed to be very active recently though.

I've come across Dave Ackley via Bach, and he has some really fascinating ideas about improving the nature of computing, seems to be a real outsider figure.

I'm sure there's many more brilliant and charasmatic folk out there, but we just haven't come across the the links to them yet.

LichenStone··on Alan Kay: A Conversation with CMU Faculty and Students (2007) [video]
This is my very favourite Alan Kay talk. I particular like 1:05:34, which reinforces just how passionate he is about computing as one of the best things humans have ever come up with.

Also > "Most people can only deal with the present in terms of the past" is very relevant right now I feel...

LichenStone··on Ask HN: What are some good keyboards?
I really like the Vortex Race 3 as a gaming keyboard with some Kailh Speed Silver linear switches. It has almost no bezels and the layout has everything but a numpad, I love boards that don't take up more desk space than is absolutely needed.
LichenStone··on Ask HN: What are some good keyboards?
Excercising your wrists and arms is absolutely one of the best ways to avoid RSI in my experience. I think the advantages of using ergonomic layouts are perhaps overstated in some cases, I find that if I allow my hands to 'float' a little and move around more freely my fingers find the keys easily, and I don't need to worry about planting my wrists in a fixed position and having them at an uncomfortable angle.

I imagine ergonomic designs probably makes the most sense for people that do large volumes of typing with high WPM. For me I just really like the compact layout of my FC660C, small boards allow me to have a mouse either side, swapping mouse hands is another great way to avoid RSI.

LichenStone··on Ask HN: What are some good keyboards?
I've had my Leopold FC660C for I think 5 years now, it was very expensive but completely worth it IMHO. Capacitive sensing is just so much better than electrical contacts, due to the programmed in hysteresis, chattering just isn't a thing with Topre. I put the Hasu controller in it too and made my own custom layout with QMK.

If I was looking at getting a new keyboard I would also consider hall effect and optical key switch design keyboards.

LichenStone··on Generative Pseudo Labeling for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation of Dense Retrieval
There's something very satisfying about that title.
