Leparamour··on FB messenger silently censoring links, claims they were sent
But it's that silence which deceives the user into thinking that the message never arriving is a technical malfunction and not intentional censoring. How many times, do you think the user would see the censoring message and be cool with it? Maybe once or twice, then they will stop using FB likely forever and tell all their friends. But does FB want that? Hell no, they want to retain the user for data collection and ad showing purposes. So how about just not showing the censoring message, make the user believe there was just a technical glitch and not insidious shadowbanning?

I think this "bug" is intentional and done for plausible deniability in case of a lawsuit: "See, there is transparence. It was just a bug in the code. Human error."

Leparamour··on Nuclear scientists as assassination targets (2012)
How do you feel about Israeli scientists being assassinated? Fair game, too?
Leparamour··on Elizabeth Holmes to Accuse Ex-Boyfriend of Abuse at Trial
It relates to modern office life regarding gender relations, vaporware and business methods of presumed sociopathic entrepreneurs.
Leparamour··on US military conducts unmanned airstrike against ISIS-K planner
>US military conducts unmanned airstrike against ISIS-K planner

Alleged ISIS-K planner. Unless I somehow missed the trial, I doubt the culpability was sufficiently established and proven to meet common legal standards.

Also that was pretty fast. Makes you wonder why they didn't stop him before the attack if he was that easy to locate.

To me this reeks just like a wanton revenge killing to satisfy US american bloodlust after Marines had died and in order to make Biden not look so much like the embarassing failure internally and on the world stage.

Leparamour··on Almost all of the top subreddits are moderated by the same people
> I don't know why you're going through all that effort instead of just creating a new account.

I think there is some kind of IP or cookie based identification going on.

One of my accounts was permabanned on the German /r/de subreddit for publically questioning a mod decision. At the next login I found that ALL of my accounts that I used for serious and professional subreddits (netsec, python, learnmachinelearning) and never once used on /r/de had also been permabanned.

I wrote to the helpdesk but they only told me to contact the mods of /r/de which is impossible if you're permabanned.

Leparamour··on Jabs mostly fend off the Delta strain but breakthroughs are infectious
> I suspect that if those numbers were significant they would have found their way into the headline.

That would mean admitting the anti-vaxxers were right after all. Unlikely to happen.

If it happens at all, the dial will be turned up slowly: only ever admit what cannot longer be denied plausibly.

Leparamour··on Who Are the Taliban?

Leparamour··on Elizabeth Holmes gives birth as Theranos fraud trial nears

Leparamour··on Scientist says cleaning indoor air could make us healthier and smarter
>use a nice filter-based air purifier for white noise. It has deep bass

I went nearly insane when this constant humming sound started to appear inside my apartment seemingly coming from several directions. It would start at the oddest times and then go out again after a while, making you think it's over, only to start again after a minute. I wasn't able to focus on work or reading anymore, I was starting to get really irritated and aggressive. Even with active noise-canceling headphones I could feel the bass sound. It took me the six weeks to pinpoint the origin of the sound to my upstairs neighbors, who eventually admitted that they had bought an air purifier because of allergies and kept it running all day long and through the night. If you recommend it to friends please let them know that the bass sound and the vibration translates through walls and might make a helpless neighbor's life miserable.

Leparamour··on Fourth police officer who responded to Jan 6 attack dies by suicide
The people who wrote this report are activists sympathizing with the BLM movement, just look at the names and their social media presence. It's basically propaganda, twisting and omitting inconvenient facts.
Leparamour··on I built a business that lets me live on the beach full time
I used to do my morning runs in a park area which was frequently used at night for illegal partying. So every once in a while I would find wallets with IDs, passports and a phone. Naive and honest as I was, I always took these to a police station that was nearby. I stopped doing this when the police started to (informally) accuse of me of having stolen these items, like the stories of the firefighter that would start fires by himself. I changed my running route so it wouldn't take me near the partying spots anymore.
Leparamour··on Fauci wants to make vaccines for the next pandemic before it hits
>Wouldn't you have to perform gain of function research in order to create vaccines for not yet existing viruses?

And he would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for those meddling HN users.

Leparamour··on Ask HN: Tinder is full of fake profiles, posted by Tinder. How to prove?
>Is any evidence for your belief? Not having a bio text doesn't indicate a fake profile.

Not the OP but in my European country a number of the pictures of women appear oddly "American" in style. Especially when there are indicators like foreign products or foreign electrical sockets in the background. Although those might be in fact catfishing profiles. For me personally, Tinder has been hardly more than an exercise in frustration and disappointment in my fellow humans.

Leparamour··on You can be shy and still be a CEO
Thank you for your reply. It wasn't my intention to make you reveal too much about yourself, so no problem here.

Sounds like an interesting character either way. You already need to possess a lot of mental flexibility and social intelligence to thrive inside both engineering culture AND marketing culture.

Leparamour··on AI tools have been built to catch Covid, but none of them helped
>Superspreaders (antimaskers, antilockdown, antidistancing, antivaxxers) are the people keeping COVID alive.

It's not as black and white as you try to paint it.

I'm not living in the US but I've encountered a sizable number of people who dropped all caution and safety measures as soon as they got vaccinated even though they still can catch the virus and spread the virus with the added bonus of favoring the formation of immune escaping mutations.

Leparamour··on AI tools have been built to catch Covid, but none of them helped
>The companies delayed their announcement and strengthened the trials so the current Trumpista favorite argument would in theory lose steam.

They [Pfizer] delayed the announcement to three days after the elections. I'm sure those three days were critical in testing and making the vaccine safe for the consumer./s

It was an obvious political move to deny back-then US president Trump a public success as a consequence from him enacting "Operation Warp Speed".[0][1][2]

Also, "Trumpista"? You must feel really clever and enlightened.

Leparamour··on Pedestrian fatalities are rising in the US
>It's 100% texting, both drivers and pedestrians.

This is unfortunately very true, even for societies which are much more sensitive to this issue. As a regular cyclist in my hometown of Berlin/Germany I sometimes see so much as every third car driver looking at or obviously typing on their phone although this is illegal and of course dangerous.

Leparamour··on You can be shy and still be a CEO
Just out of curiousity, who was this "magical salesman" CEO? Some well-known face?
Leparamour··on Against Persuasion

Leparamour··on Lessons learned from 15 years of SumatraPDF, an open source Windows app
Same experience here.

It's one the first programs I install on every new system and have recommended it to friends for years.

If any of the programmers involved read here: Thank you very much for all the hard work. It was worth it.

Leparamour··on Police are telling ShotSpotter to alter evidence from gunshot-detecting AI
Although I agree with you in general, I think this is for practical reasons. It's not helpful to record 24/7, outside of police operations with regard to battery capacity and limits to bandwidth and data storage.

One could propose a system where recording is triggered automatically when leaving the patrol car (BLE dongle) and can only be reset by a centralized authority.

Leparamour··on Police are telling ShotSpotter to alter evidence from gunshot-detecting AI
>No technology will work if the people using it is corrupt.

Put it on a blockchain then.

Edit: I'm serious. Blockchain is exactly meant for application inside zero-trust environments. If you think it's impossible to put a video on blockchain, just have software making hash-fingerprints at regular time intervals and save those on a blockchain to make tampering with the video evident.

Leparamour··on Beneath Istanbul, Archaeologists Explore an Ancient City's Byzantine Basements
My personal impression with archaeological sites around Istanbul is that architecture seems only cared for if it's from Osmanic heritage or connected to Islam. Anything that predates Islamic ruling is rather let to fall into disrepair.

But again this just my personal impression from visiting the area and maybe there are budgetary reasons instead of religious chauvinism.

Leparamour··on Coronavirus: Was US money used to fund risky research in China?
Betteridge's law of headlines says no. ;)
Leparamour··on Coronavirus: Was US money used to fund risky research in China?
To me it sounds like damage control lawyer speak: "Only admit what you can't deny any longer".

None of this is new information, only that you were called a 'conspiracy theorist' for bringing these up until now and at the risk of being ostracized, just like with the 'lab-origin' theory. Doesn't exactly inspire trust in BBC reporting when journalists could have asked these exact same questions 6 months or more ago, unless the reporting was suppressed on purpose.

You have to wonder what else will be admitted as true and if they will throw Dr. Fauci under the bus eventually.

Leparamour··on Russia ‘Weaponizing’ AI: Pentagon Intelligence Report
How would authenticating videos work practically?

The politician that was covertly recorded receiving bribes or ordering a murder surely will not say: "Yep, that's me on the video.".
