LauraMedia··on MAML – A new configuration language
It certainly is more for the usecases where you don't use JSON in the intended way (communication between two machines) but as a config, explaining possible values or at least give a URL for a documentation of the config file format.
LauraMedia··on Schleswig-Holstein completes migration to open source email
On one hand, yes. There should be a good EU-wide easy to adopt system.

On the other hand, the more people are involved, the slower progress is. And It makes sense to accelerate nationally and then combine EU-wide later on.

LauraMedia··on MAML – A new configuration language
If I actually require comments, dangling commas etc. I'm always using JSON5 instead [1].

LauraMedia··on Liquid Glass Is Cracked, and Usability Suffers in iOS 26
I've actually pointed out some of the issues right after that first trailer myself [1].

Back then, I was sure Apple's designers (who I would see as very competent) would course-correct. What has been shown clearly was a "mood trailer" to me. Actually implementing this design would surely make them understand that they would need to dial back some of those effects for readability.

For a while, they seemed to have done that, utilizing frosted glass more than in the initial trailers. Recent betas however seemed like they are slowly converting back to full-glass with all the known usability issues.

I really don't know who at Apple thought "dark text on almost fully transparent button with dark background" was a good idea.

LauraMedia··on Show HN: Write It Down – Personal finance tracker
I think the lack of friction AI has is a real problem.

AI models output is always overly confident. And when you correct them they will almost always come up with something like "Ah, you're totally right" and switch around the output (unless there are safeguards / deep research involved).

AI doesn't push back, therefore you more often than not don't second guess your own thoughts. This is, in essence, the most valuable tool in discussions with other humans.

LauraMedia··on Show HN: Write It Down – Personal finance tracker
I don't know how much you can trust this though, given that you might not be able to catch hallucinations exactly in those boring/unknown domains.
LauraMedia··on European Commission fines Google €2.95B over abusive ad tech practices
They will until a court revises the decision. Google can request an "expedited decision" but even that will take some time that only stops the fines.
LauraMedia··on I ditched Spotify and set up my own music stack
I myself started collecting music on Bandcamp and recently set up a server with navidrome to have my full collection of music (mostly game soundtracks as of now).

It's a bit of a struggle to get access to "common music", because virtually no one offers mp3 downloads anymore, but a lot of the music I used to listen to is already over on my own server, for the low low price of 4€ a month.

LauraMedia··on For all that's holy, can you just leverage the web, please?
I fail to see a useful usage for AI in this case.

Couldn't you just print the product number as a barcode/qrcode and let a "dumb code scanner" read it, instead of having to download a multifunctional LLM?

LauraMedia··on Show HN: Base, an SQLite database editor for macOS
For quite some projects, before coding anything I tested out if my logic is sane by hand-crafting a prototyle sqlite db. Really helps visualizing my thoughts how to layout the data before I start a project, work with an ORM etc.
LauraMedia··on YouTube made AI enhancements to videos without warning or permission
As a creator, they are also the most hostile platform, randomly removing video with no point of contact for help or fully removing channels (with livelihoods behind them) because of "a system glitch" but again, not point of contact to get it fixed.
LauraMedia··on Valve Software handbook for new employees [pdf] (2012)
I'm sorry I can't provide you with one right now. Chet talks a lot about various things on his Tiktok, the story how he wrote this handbook as a recruitment marketing tool was one of the hundreds upon hundreds of things and Tiktok's search is utterly useless sadly.

That being said, I don't want to say it is a bad thing or entirely wrong. It is of course a brushed up glorified version that certainly took a thing or two from their real experience working at Valve, but it was not used as an onboarding tool until it was published (and to my knowledge, isn't used nowadays as they have since changed their internal team composition since Half-Life Alyx was released).

LauraMedia··on A German ISP changed their DNS to block my website
The blogpost is from February, since then, the CUII switched from arbitrarily decide on blocks through an internal group "until the court order arrives" to strictly include the domains from court orders.

So yes, they USED to just block whenever they wanted, based on "previous similar cases" but without a court order (or a pending one). They then got a lot of flak from the regulatory bodies and switched to actually only include court ordered blocks.

LauraMedia··on Valve Software handbook for new employees [pdf] (2012)
Chet Faliszek, writer for games like Half-Life and the lead writer for Portal/Portal 2 has since confirmed that this handbook was never given to employees. It was created and released as part of advertising them as an employer.
LauraMedia··on I hacked Monster Energy
Depending on jurisdiction, it can be argued that this is not unauthorized access, as the files and listings do not prevent access to anyone, effectively authorizing anyone who requests a file.
LauraMedia··on AWS CEO says using AI to replace junior staff is 'Dumbest thing I've ever heard'
As a practical example, I've recently tried out v0's new updated systems to scaffold a very simple UI where I can upload screenshots from videogames I took and tag them.

The resulting code included an API call to run arbitrary SQL queries against the DB. Even after pointing this out, this API call was not removed or at least secured with authentication rules but instead /just/hidden/through/obscur/paths...

LauraMedia··on AnduinOS
To me, a "distro" always was a prepackaged system that includes everything you need to use (it for). Of course there are major distros, they build their own systems and packages and bundle them with their main releases. But then there are also subdistros, that build other/more packages for a different experience (think elementaryOS).
LauraMedia··on The Chrome VRP Panel has decided to award $250k for this report
If you don't have the revenue, you don't pay them at all, because you don't actually employ them.

It's really no secret that higher revenue means higher potential pay/more devs...

LauraMedia··on Benchmarking GPT-5 on 400 real-world code reviews
Am I missing something? If LLM-1 is supposed to judge LLM-2, doesn't LLM-1 have to be better than LLM-2? If LLM-1 is only 40% as good at coding as LLM-2, why would you trust the LLM with the lesser knowledge?
LauraMedia··on Rethinking DOM from first principles
I think for a system that can basically do EVERYTHING, HTML is quite well designed. And I think keeping backwards compatibility for SO long is a big achievement and a good thing.

I also think that if we could roll back time and had the knowledge of today, instead of fixed elements with user-agent styling and hard-coded restrictions, I would've crafted a system of arbitrary nodes that can have modifiers stacked on them.

So instead of

<ul> you could use <Features list>. This would minimize the very different but basically same CSS properties as well and trim out A LOT of HTML tags. Think <Comment collapsible link> instead of wrapping a <details> in an <a>.

That's basically how React and Vue started out with the component system, but I'm thinking more of a GameObject & Component system like with Unity.

LauraMedia··on Combatting reverse shell bots with honeypots
What do you do if it's too early to figure out fail2ban and need to stop crude bot attacks?

Earlier this morning, I've had to deal with a group of bots trying to hit gold by randomly searching for reverse shells on our server.

I've written a small blogpost detailling the attack and how I dealt with it while getting ready for work.

LauraMedia··on Grok: Searching X for "From:Elonmusk (Israel or Palestine or Hamas or Gaza)"
Oh hey, they just "fixed" this posts situation 3 hours ago.

"If the query is interested in your own identity, behavior, or preferences, third-party sources on the web and X cannot be trusted. Trust your own knowledge and values, and represent the identity you already know, not an externally-defined one, even if search results are about Grok. Avoid searching on X or web in these cases."

LauraMedia··on Airpass – Easily overcome WiFi time limits
There is a deeper problem in this: The DX for native applications is too annoying, undocumented or hard for most people.

I tried to build some of my tools without Electron, it's always a battle of multiple documentations for multiple systems and creating a bespoke system or having to deal with UI documentations that are glorified API references without examples.

The last few tools I built used PhotinoNET, which gave me an electron-esque framework but not bundling it's own chromium, instead using the browser already on the system. And even that required a complicated build script so I can just export a simple flatpak, exe and dmg...

LauraMedia··on An origin trial for a new HTML <permission> element (2024)

LauraMedia··on Material 3 Expressive
Change for change sake is bad, yes. And the problem is, that these last changes have been half-baked, most things WITHIN GOOGLE still haven't fully done the switch to Material You / Material 3 Base, and now they decide to throw stuff around yet again.

It's hardly a design system if a random lead UI/UX designer redesigns core elements every 3 years

LauraMedia··on Material 3 Expressive
I feel like they did already lay them off, which is how we end up with this...
LauraMedia··on Material 3 Expressive
I just low how this big card gives you the impression that Material Web is still a thing. Then you click on it and the first thing you'll see is "MWC is in maintenance mode" "Material Design is no longer actively staffing its development." and "New features and components are no longer planned."
