Lariscus··on Show HN: An API for CO₂ Removal
Carbon capture isn't real (as advertised). If you take green energy out of the supply to capture carbon, a carbon producing power plant will have to make up for it.

Lariscus··on Ask HN: Thoughts and feelings about Twitter under Elon? Any predictions?
I am fully prepared for a far-right hellhole with little to no moderation in the name of free speech.
Lariscus··on In Europe, the bird will fly by our EU rules
The EU is now once again protecting me from Mr. Musk. I am so happy to be an EU citizen.
Lariscus··on Tesla's New Battery Isn't What They Said It Would Be
Is anyone really surprised? The list of things announced by Elon Musk that actually where delivered as described by him is awfully short.
Lariscus··on Figma Alternatives
I don't think that is a good example, nothing is stopping you from using a different browser or operating system to keep using your preferred application after development is shutdown. If you are self-hosting these avenues are still open to you; a discontinued online service is just gone.
Lariscus··on Making iron from sand [video]
Bronze has a lower melting point compared to Iron making it much easier to work with. I think you also have to invent charcoal first to reach the temperatures necessary to melt iron ore.
Lariscus··on FDA to order Juul e-cigarettes off U.S. market
Let me introduce you to the magical concept of public transport.
Lariscus··on FDA to order Juul e-cigarettes off U.S. market
Yes, that actually sounds reasonable. Especially if you also account for the deaths caused by reckless driving.
Lariscus··on Reasons to tour by bicycle
How much traffic can you expect on that road? I rode on similar roads and it was actually quite nice.
Lariscus··on EU-US privacy shield 2.0 is again a political show
Are you blocking cookies by default? Quite often your consent is saved in a cookie. There is of course also the possibility that the website operator is hoping that you get so annoyed that you consent to tracking sooner or later.
Lariscus··on EU-US privacy shield 2.0 is again a political show
The GDPR in no way requires cookie banners, that is the choice of the website you visited. Cookies required for functionality of a website do not require consent, privacy invading tracking cookies on the other hand do.
Lariscus··on OwnTracks – keep track of your own location
Oh good, I will give it a try in that case. I just found a couple of issues and a merge request that was later reverted so I assumed the dependency was still there.
Lariscus··on OwnTracks – keep track of your own location
The Android app seems to require google play services. Quite ironic for an app that wants to give me back control of my data. I think this defeats the purpose of the app if I take steps to reduce my dependency on google services I might as well go the whole way; Whats the point of half measures like this. Checking the issue tracker the devs do not seem to agree, a shame really the app seemed interesting at first.
Lariscus··on Ask HN: Is there any alternative to Codesandbox for TUI's?
You could try to use VS Codes Live Share Extension and share you desktop using the video conferencing software of your choice.
Lariscus··on Google employees who work from home could lose money
Don't forget, to the CEO and their cronies you are all just peons. If they could pay you nothing at all they would absolutely do so.
Lariscus··on How far could a spaceship go if we never ran out of thrust? (2020)
You would never reach your destination and at some point you would be stranded in dark space. This kurzgesagt video has some info on this topic.[1]

Lariscus··on Ethereum dev Virgil Griffith back in jail after checking $1M Coinbase account
It is certainly ethically questionable but I don't think it is reasonable to imprison someone for giving a talk at a conference.
Lariscus··on EU antitrust: Apple shouldn't use privacy and security to stave off competition
I expected the worst when reading the headline but this is great news. If the EU forces Apple to allow side-loading apps I might actually buy an Apple smartphone.
Lariscus··on GitHub scraped your code. And they plan to charge you
Yes, and it is also not an OK thing to do for the start-up. They were just lucky that nobody noticed their licence violations.
Lariscus··on Microsoft support page says Windows 10 “retirement date” is 2025
Does the file chooser show thumbnails yet?
Lariscus··on Learn Go in five minutes
I like C but strongly dislike Go. They share nothing other than having a small(ish) feature set.
Lariscus··on EU pushes for 'right to disconnect' from work at home
Remove workers protections from freelancers and suddenly there are no more normal jobs available. No thanks, companies already try to game the system that way and this would only make it worse.
Lariscus··on .NET 5.0
This little discussion got me curious about how hard it actually is to use COM interop with .NET. Using Visual Studio its just a right click on your dependencies, selecting 'Add COM Reference...' and choosing the library you want to use. I was then able to call SAPI very easily like this:

  var voice = new SpeechLib.SpVoiceClass();
  voice.Speak("Hello World!");

The documentation for SAPI could use some love though. The sample code that is supposed to be there is nowhere to be found.

Lariscus··on Mark Zuckerberg faces employee blowback over ruling on Trump comments
Giving a platform to fascists makes them seem normal and just a quirky alternative to the mainstream. It effectively allows them to easily spread their propaganda.

In his book Mark Bray writes: "It’s important to note, however, that the vast majority of people who oppose limiting speech on political grounds are not free speech absolutists. They all have their exceptions to the rule, whether obscenity, incitement to violence, copyright infringement, press censorship during wartime, or restrictions for the incarcerated. If we rephrase the terms of the debate by taking these exceptions into account, we can see that many liberals support limiting the speech of working-class teens busted for drugs, but not limiting the speech of Nazis. Many are fine when the police quash the free speech of the undocumented by hunting them down, while they amplify the speech of the Klan by protecting them. They advocate curtailing ads for cigarettes but not ads for white supremacy."

In my opinion de-platforming fascists is indeed infringing on their right of free speech, but this infringement is justified as it protects the the safety and well-being of marginalized populations.

Lariscus··on A collection of videos of police brutality
I see did not get that from you original comment but please enlighten me on how demanding ethical behaviour from software engineers leads to a eugenics program.
Lariscus··on A collection of videos of police brutality
Are you actually arguing for eugenics?
Lariscus··on A collection of videos of police brutality
Then the person in question is 'spineless and unethical' and shares a responsibility for the results of their labour. 'Just following orders' does not absolve them from their responsibilities to their community. That their sacrifice might be in vain is a separate issue that should be, in my opinion, addressed by making education in ethics a mandatory part of the curriculum of all engineering degrees.
Lariscus··on A collection of videos of police brutality
Imagine being asked by your boss to implement such a thing and actually doing it. How spineless and unethical would you have to be to even consider following such an order.
