Lapel2742··on The state of Schleswig-Holstein is consistently relying on open source
I'm not an expert and that still might be the case but you have to understand that for many Microsoft as an American company is simply no longer an option for critical infrastructure. It's a matter of trust.
Lapel2742··on Mistral 3 family of models released
> that the comparisons would be extremely unfavorable.

Why should they compare apples to oranges? Ministral3 Large costs ~1/10th of Sonnet 4.5. They clearly target different users. If you want a coding assistant you probably wouldn't choose this model for various reasons. There is place for more than only the benchmark king.

Of course, he shot himself in the foot but that’s what AI companies are pushing. They’re promoting the idea of running multiple agents in parallel. How long will it take before most people grow exhausted from constantly acknowledging requests from five different agents at once and simply switch on auto-pilot?
Lapel2742··on We're losing our voice to LLMs
They seem to artificially create filter bubbles, echo chambers and rage. They do that just for the money. They divide societies.

For example:

(Trap of Social Media Algorithms: A Systematic Review of Research on Filter Bubbles, Echo Chambers, and Their Impact on Youth)

> First, there is a consistent observation across computational audits and simulation studies that platform curation systems amplify ideologically homogeneous content, reinforcing confirmation bias and limiting incidental exposure to diverse viewpoints [1,4,37]. These structural dynamics provide the “default” informational environment in which youth engagement unfolds. Simulation models highlight how small initial biases are magnified by recommender systems, producing polarization cascades at the network level [2,10,38]. Evidence from YouTube demonstrates how personalization drifts toward sensationalist and radical material [14,41,49]. Such findings underscore that algorithmic bias is not a marginal technical quirk but a structural driver shaping everyday media diets. For youth, this environment is especially influential: platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube are central not only for entertainment but also for identity work and civic socialization [17]. The narrowing of exposure may thus have longer-term consequences for political learning and civic participation.

Lapel2742··on We're losing our voice to LLMs
> it's how the algorithms promote engagement.

They are destroying our democratic societies and should be heavily regulated. The same will become true for AI.

Lapel2742··on Gnome is better macOS than macOS
> Gnome is very keyboard centric.

... and misses the fact that not every valid computer use is keyboard centric too.

Sometimes I use my mouse and I do not want to switch to the keyboard and no, my life is not about being most productive and about saving 1/10th of a second if I use the keyboard only (which isn't even possible). I'm human after all and not a machine. I like my mouse. I paid a fortune for it.

Edit:

And it doesn't matter if this is the old way of the 90s and not modern. Being modern/new is no virtue in itself.

Lapel2742··on Gnome is better macOS than macOS
Tray icons shouls be supported by default too but won't.
Lapel2742··on Gnome is better macOS than macOS
Because some times you are doing stuff that is more mouse centric and it is more comfortable to continue using the mouse.
Lapel2742··on Gnome is better macOS than macOS
Don't get me wrong, KDE is a great desktop. There is nothing I can point out especially. I do not like the feel of KDE. It's just my opinion, not law.
Lapel2742··on Gnome is better macOS than macOS
> As someone who has never really clicked with virtual desktop, this doesn’t work for me. This feels like such a glaring omission of a convention that has been around for decades (even in past versions of Gnome).

As someone who uses Gnome simply because IMHO the alternatives like KDE are worse, I came to the conclusion that these people do not work on desktop computers. It feels like an interface designed for tablets and laptops you operate by some swipe gestures.

Lapel2742··on Brexit Hit to UK Economy Double Official Estimate, Study Finds
> I really wonder how people like Nigel Farage sleep at night.

These people have no morals or ethics. They are psychopaths that only care for themselves. Even if it comes at devastating costs for others.

Brexit was a complete success, for Nigel Farage. The last thing I heard is that his party leads the polls in the UK.

In my country the spokesperson of the far-right party (AfD) was caught saying: "The worse things get for Germany, the better it is for the AfD". That's their mindset.

Sure it was. Just as OP wrote:

Lapel2742··on I think nobody wants AI in Firefox, Mozilla
> I'd be happy if Firefox was a Chromium patched with better extension support and a mobile version.

The main reason I still use Firefox is that it is the only serious engine beside chromium and I do not want Google to get a monopoly in this area (although practically they already have).

Firefox is not bad. It does its job and I'm not needing more. It's even fast enough. I dislike the management and its decisions. I'm constantly looking at Ladybird. I even subscribed to their YouTube channel and if one day it is a usable Browser on Linux and on phone there is a high chance that I will ditch Firefox.

Lapel2742··on VibeThinker-1.5B
>> [...] achieving state-of-the-art performance in mathematical and *coding tasks* [...]

And it fails at one of the simplest coding tasks where a Granite model at nearly half the size has no problems.

It's probably an important discovery but seemingly only usable in an academic context.

Yes. Hetzner is a German company from Gunzenhausen.

Lapel2742··on VibeThinker-1.5B
I'm pretty sure that this is some kind of scientific achievement that I do not fully understand but the real world use cases for this model seem to be very limited.

I gave it two tasks. "Create a new and original story in 500 words" and "Write a Python console game". Both of those resulted in an endless loop with the model repeating itself

I'm honest. Given that a 1B Granite nano model has only little problems (word count) with such tasks and given that VibeThinker is announced as a programming model it's disappointing to see a 1.6B model fail multiple times.

Lapel2742··on GPT-5.1: A smarter, more conversational ChatGPT
In my case it's very useful for learning purposes or for quick questions when I'm unsure where to even start looking for information.

LLMs are useful. I just do not believe that they are that useful that it is worth the money put into it.

Lapel2742··on GPT-5.1: A smarter, more conversational ChatGPT
> No way to know if that is true, but if it indeed is the case, then from business point of view, it makes sense for them to make their model meet the expectation of users even.

It makes sense if your target is the general public talking to an AI girlfriend.

I don't know if that will fill their pockets enough to become profitable given the spending they announced but isn't this like they are admitting that all the AGI, we cure cancer, ... stuff was just bullshitting? And if it was bullshitting aren't they overvalued? Sex sells but will it sell enough?

> i don't like it and would rather prefer more robotic response by default rather than me setting its tone explicitly.

Me neither. I want high information density.

Lapel2742··on Stop overhyping AI, scientists tell von der Leyen
Couldn't agree more. As a European: Yes, there's a lot (and I mean A LOT!) of things that could be improved but for all that is bad, it could be much worse. Especially when you look around. There are only few countries I would permanently move to. Nearly all of them are European.

> [...] infected with the woke mind virus [...]

I won't argue other than telling you: That's peak American infighting and I'm not American. I leave a citation of Arthur Schopenhauer, a famous philosopher, here. Maybe it betters your condition:

“The cheapest sort of pride is national pride; for if a man is proud of his own nation, it argues that he has no qualities of his own of which he can be proud; otherwise he would not have recourse to those which he shares with so many millions of his fellowmen. The man who is endowed with important personal qualities will be only too ready to see clearly in what respects his own nation falls short, since their failings will be constantly before his eyes. But every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud adopts, as a last resource, pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and glad to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”

Lapel2742··on Grok 4 Fast now has 2M context window
That's why I wrote "neo-nazi" and not Nazi. I'm German and I listened to all the stories my grandparents told me about the Nazi reign. In my my opinion he is f'ing Neo-nazi and if he isn't he behaves like one which in the end is the same.

You know what I learned about the Nazis from my Grandparents? Not every German was a Nazi. In fact just short above 50% voted for them. And the Nazis didn't start with war and Auschwitz. That was peak Nazi. They started with “Awake, Germany!” and river cruises.

The Holocaust was also possible because far too many people who were essentially decent turned a blind eye and found excuses for the Nazis until it was too late.

Lapel2742··on ICC ditches Microsoft 365 for openDesk
At least they seem to be actively working on it:

https://gitlab.opencode.de/bmi/opendesk

They have some real users too. I know of some out of my head. According to ChatGPT:

- Robert Koch Institute (RKI) – entered a contract on 11 June 2025 to use openDesk as the technical basis for the “Agora” platform for public‑health authorities.

- BWI GmbH – the IT infrastructure provider for the German armed forces (Bundeswehr); signed a framework contract for openDesk.

- Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie – also mentioned as an early adopter of openDesk.

- Föderale IT‑Kooperation (FITKO) – listed as a user in the EU OSS Catalogue entry for openDesk.

I think I read that some German states use the software too.

You never know what will happen in the long run but the solution will probably be maintained for some time given it's backing by the federal government of Germany.

Lapel2742··on Tongyi DeepResearch – open-source 30B MoE Model that rivals OpenAI DeepResearch
> I'd love to load this up on the old 2080ti with 128gb of vram and play, even slowly.

I think you mean ram and no vram. AFAIK this is a 30b moe model with 3b active parameters. Comparable to the Qwen3 MOE model. If you do not expect 60 tps such models should run sufficiently fast.

I run the Qwen3 MOE Model (https://huggingface.co/unsloth/Qwen3-30B-A3B-GGUF/blob/main/...) in 4-bit quantization on an 11 year old i5-6600 (32GB) and a Radeon 6600 with 8GB. According to a quick search your card is faster than that and I get ~12 tps with 16k context on Llama.cpp, which is ok for playing around.

My Radeon (ROCm) specific batch file to start this:

llama-server --ctx-size 16384 --flash-attn on --cache-type-k q8_0 --cache-type-v q8_0 --device ROCm0 -ngl -1 --model /usr/local/share/gguf/Qwen3-30B-A3B-Q4_0.gguf --cache-ram 16384 --cpu-moe --numa distribute --override-tensor "\.ffn_.*_exps\.weight=CPU" --jinja --temp 0.7 --port 8080

Lapel2742··on Be Careful with Obsidian
> I ended up going with Logseq for many reasons - yes it appears to be less mature however that doesn't mean that it is inferior by any measure (and open-source)

If I remember correctly it was inferior to Obsidian because Logseq used a proprietary format. Yes, it was/is officially markdown but not in a format that is easily transferred. I don't know if it changed but Logseq documents where literally just a big Markdown list if I remember correctly.

Personally I do see the problem with closed source solutions but the real problem with Obsidian are AFAIk the plugins and not the App itself. I mean: They have a long way to go to be even remotely as evil as people at Google or Microsoft. But if that ever happens I simply walk away with my .md documents.

Finally! Someone who still remembers the best software ever written. I looooved Sidekick and we used it throughout our small company. It's so long ago. I remember only parts of it now but it was such a useful tool.
