LambdaTrain··on Apple Files Appeal in Epic Games Lawsuit, Asks to Delay App Store Changes
Thanks for the sharing! I like the way that Hoeg specifically goes from a lawer's perspective on game companies. Just wondering if you know similar channels providing legal knowledge but from perspectives in other industry?
LambdaTrain··on 7-Eleven breached customer privacy by collecting facial imagery without consent
Same with Rite Aid stores around my school. The auto checkout machine has been equipped with cameras since pandemic (about one yr ago). It gave me a sense of intrusion.
LambdaTrain··on [dead]
The issue is that this local law Is flawed, and this flawed law double tapped with criminal activities to hurt female citizens. That is why most of us emphasize with the victim here, but concern less about an underage getting beer from some barman exposed.
LambdaTrain··on Phone companies must now block carriers that didn’t meet FCC robocall deadline
Would someone familiar with voice service technology explain how robocalling is made and why it would be a challenge to identify & block its source? What takes phone companies not fixing this issue for all these years?
LambdaTrain··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
I used a dell inspiron laptop years ago. As its fan became broken, sometimes it could make noise that people can hear from miles away. And yes, it was scarying when Windows 10 auto reboot and updated at 3AM.
LambdaTrain··on Malicious PyPI packages stealing credit cards and injecting code
On Windows 10 if I want to view plaintext of stored password in chrome, the password of the currently logged in Windows user will be required. So is password stored and encrypted? Just wondering if the same is done to cc information and if such practice is effective against malware stealing
LambdaTrain··on Is Mathematics Real? (2020)
Add: so the idea is that once we have integers, we can construct rationals and even real numbers instead of talking about reals as granted. Now when taking a bite out of an apple, we can say it takes, say 1/3, of an apple, while we only assume the idea of integers.
LambdaTrain··on Is Mathematics Real? (2020)
This quote is neither true nor false. The author called it a "sentiment", but I think when Kronecker made this statement, he took it as some kind of principle to work out the foundation of modern mathematics.

Basically the mathematical notion of integer is trying to make sense of our idea of a discrete unit. Taking a bite of apple makes it non-unit, but I think you would agree that the notion of "one apple" or "two dogs" makes common sense.

Also when reading someone's quote, I would always consider its context. I think Kronecket had the axiomatic construction of real number in mind. The idea of rational number and real number can be investigated by just assuming the idea of increment by one is solid.

These mathematical concepts are usually covered in a undergraduate analysis class. For more information, see Cauchy's construction and Dadekind's construction.

LambdaTrain··on Identifying Authorship Style in Malicious Binaries: Techniques, Challenges
Authorship style identification in natural language has good intuition that one can work with. However, such notion in binary executive sounds totally nonsense. The only possibility that makes it work might originate from code reuse in a single organization, which is a classical feature to look into for malware detection.

So I have no idea what new information this arxiv paper provides other than to introduce an academic topic full of fancy terminologies.

LambdaTrain··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
This article deliberately creates a narrative that portrays Google, Amazon, and Apple as alarming monopolistic roles, which has nothing to do with their decisions to remove Parler. The main concern here is national security, instead of showing off their regulation power (which is an aspect these tech giants always try to conceal).

The narrative in the article such as "how they just used their unconstrained power to utterly destroy a rising competitor" looks absurd to me. The competitors of parler Is Facebook, Twitter, i.e. social media platforms, NOT Google, Amazon, and Apple.

It feels like the author deliberately misused these kinds of association to trigger irrelevant focus.

LambdaTrain··on Ask HN: Why YouTube suggestions are better when I am logged off?
Agreed. I find the Youtube suggestion more useful to me when I log off. I may start searching videos of interest and get suggestions of related videos. After it's done, I just clear the cookies. It's like building a new profile of minimal necessity every time.
